Edgar Wright On Scott Pilgrim VS The World Falling Short At Box Office

The director talks about Scott Pilgrim VS The World low box office success and the struggle for something different to succeed as a movie...

"Anything that's a little bit different is a little bit harder to sell," Wright told MTV News. "And when you have to go beyond the core of the geek audience — and I say that as a geek myself, I don't use it as a derogatory term — you have to work a little bit harder."

"I felt that along the press tour — sometimes it would be a thing where you would find yourself recommending it, but there was always some kind of extra qualification," he explained. "You'd find yourself saying sentences like, 'You don't have to play Nintendo games to enjoy 'Scott Pilgrim.'"

"Suddenly you just feel like there's a lot of extra baggage," he said.

Scott Pilgrim VS The World is currently out on Blu-ray and DVD.

Bleed: It saddens me that this movie was not a huge success. I found it to be the most enjoyable movie of the year so far and doubt any other will catch it(maybe TRON: Legacy). You can check out my review and also follow me on twitter.

I'm so sad that this movie didn't do well.
It deserved a lot more.

Guillermo del Toro said it best at the special screening at the Egyptian theater.

-Warning- this video has some pretty bad language-

I wanted nothing to do with this movie for my own reasons, but Wright's dedication to the film is amazing. He takes his personal time to talk to people about it and I can totally respect him because of it. Its on my que to watch simply because of Edgar Wright

I didn't care one bit for Scott Pilgrim the comic book, but I loved the shit out of the movie. Much like Kick-Ass.

One of my favorite CBMs.

@ Anil

Kick Ass Budget: $60,000,000 mill, wasn't even used to full.

Kick Ass WW Gross Revenue: $96,130,432

Kick Ass DVD sales, highest this year.

What a total failure that movie was (extreme sarcasm).

GL is gonna bomb. no one cares.
Scott Pilgrim was totally overlooked. It was fun, creative, and exciting. Just like Kick-Ass.

I expect GL will open really big, then steadily fall off.

Where as both Thor and Cap will closely resemble the first Iron-mans box office performance.

It's an obscure comic with a completely ridiculous and "out there" premise...a nerd(though Scott Pilgrim in the comics is a cool geek) who has to fight 7 evil exes....so it should be no surprise that anyone outside the CBM circle would be too interested in this film.

@superguy- That's a shame, you shouldn't base the movie on the actors. Unless it's Keanu Reeves....because you know it's going to suck if he's in it. Seriously though it was a great film and I highly reccomend it, Routh was my favourite ex and Cera was perfect as Scott ;)

@Jarren Hunter- Yeah I think that too, it'll do what the first Hulk movie did. I was really disaapointed with that trailer. I'll still go see it, but I'm not expecting much.

Thor and Cap will ttoally own at the Box Office. Biggest CBMs of 2011 easily.

Superguy1591: I agree with you there man Fillion was the way to go Reynolds is better suited for Wally West. I wish they made JLA movie with them in those roles and David Boreanaz as Batman

It was just so dissapointing to see this excellent film fail just b/c a lot of people were unwilling to give it a chance due to it's "weired" and offbeat nature. I tried to get a certin girl to watch it with me but she just flat out refused b/c she couldn't get over how it looked. She eventually, and reluctedly, saw it with a friend of her's and, suprise, ended up loving it. I also tried to get one of my other female friends into it but she too couldn't get over how it looked. Just goes to show you that quite a few people are generally unwilling to got outside their reguler course of films that they're offered each year, be it good or bad, and see something unique for a change. Then again, "unique" may not be what some people are looking for.
