It was recently announced that a sequel to Shang-Chi and the Legend of The Ten Rings is officially in the works, with director Destin Daniel Cretton set to return to helm the project as part of an exclusive multi-year overall deal with Marvel Studios. We also learned that the filmmaker will take charge of a mysterious MCU-set Disney+ series.

Both of these projects are still in the very early stages of development, but Cretton did provide some interesting updates during an interview with Collider. He doesn't give much away (he hasn't even starting writing the Shang-Chi sequel), but says he has been tossing a few "loose ideas" around, some of which were "planted as questions" in the first film.

"There are a lot of ideas that we had in the opener, and some of those ideas are planted as questions, by the end of our movie. There are things that we potentially want to explore in the future. Everything changes so much, so it’s hard to say how many of those ideas will actually make it to the finish line, but there are many of them there."

Cretton is even less forthcoming about his Disney+ plans, but does reveal that the idea for the series came to him while filming Shang-Chi.

"[Feige] and the team there definitely have a clear idea of where they’re taking the MCU, but they’re also open to pitches and things that we’re passionate about," he says when asked if he pitched the idea to Marvel Studios, or they came to him. "One of the shows that we’re creating was initially an idea that I was bouncing around with our producer while we were shooting Shang-Chi and it just happened to fit in with the trajectory of where they’re going with the franchise. So, it’s a little back and forth."

We still don't know if this show will be a Shang-Chi spinoff or a completely separate project, but the initial trade reports did mention that it's expected to be a comedy, which has led to speculation that it might be focused on Awkwafina's Katy.

Shang-Chi is now available to stream on Disney+ and hit Blu-ray earlier this week. You can check out our review here.

I just hope they don't make Xi Xialing a villain going forward. Her acting as an Anti-Hero is a way better arc for her in my opinion.

This is the corner of the MCU I'm most excited to explore that we were introduced to in 2021.

I'll keep saying it until the trilogy is done, please keep Lewis Tan out of it. Get Ludi Lin, Henry Golding, and Donnie Yen in there.

@MCUKnight11 - Lewis tan could work as the cat, an arrogante foil to Shang-Chi that is a physical equal

They can do A LOT with this corner of the universe. I’ll eat it up as a huge martial arts/Far East genre movie fan.

I wouldn't mind a project focused on Katy. She was pretty likable. With that being said,I'm hoping we get a project that focuses on Shang- Chi's sister first.

Whether it's related directly to Shang-Chi or not, I think that a show like "Kung Fu' would be cool, with the main character wandering the earth in search of some MacGuffin. It could introduce a new character that eventually works into the Shang-Chi sequel (even if it's just a cameo). The MCU hasn't had any D+ shows like that yet, and if it focuses mainly on the martial arts vs. the fantasy stuff it would be relatively cheap (for a D+ show). DM me, Kevin, I'm here all day ;)

"Shang-Chi and the Heavenly Cities"

A tournament is being called between the legendary Heavenly Cities. The winner will hold and protect the ancient power of (insert Ki/Chakra/The Force), gaining significant importance and power on Earth. The victor will be able to harness this force across the planet.

1. TA LO - Shang-Chi, escorted by Katy.
2. K'UN L'UN - Danny Rand, Iron Fist, escorted by Grant Meachum
3. K'UN ZI - Xiangling, the new Steel Serpent, escorted by Crane Mother
4. PENG-LAI - Tiger's Beautiful Daughter escorted by Fat. Fat Cobra protecting the heir to Tiger Island, and the Tiger King covets the magical power.
5. KINGDOM OF SPIDERS - Bride of Nine Spiders, escorted by Dog Brother. The Under City is counting on winning the tournament, or the Spider Kingdom may resort to war.
6. LEMURIA - Naga, Escorted by Llyra (blink and you'll miss it serpent crown saga a la Odin's Throne room) - The fallen kingdom hidden under the sea. Monster toys to sell, haha.
7. OLYMPUS - City of Heroes - Hercules, escorted by Amadeus Cho. He wants to win the tournament for glory.

Z'GAMBO - City of the Dead (for the first time , this city is the host of the tournament) - White Wolf (Erik Killmonger), with Achebe in his ear, a Wakandan exile who claims he believes Wakanda should solely protect Africa.

Prince of Orphans plays in the background, perhaps as a "neutral" Judge in the tournament. I'd also be happy to fit Colleen in there somewhere, but it's bloated as it is--thay said, I would have her expend her power to defeat Prince of Orphans if he happens to turn on the heroes.

The fact that Mandarin dies in the first movie and now everything revolving around Ten Rings will be centered around girl power

My favorite part of the movie was how it's based on Eastern Culture yet knows English better than the people that keep trying to impress everyone with how they don't know what a ring is.
