It was recently announced that a sequel to Shang-Chi and the Legend of The Ten Rings is officially in the works, with director Destin Daniel Cretton set to return to helm the project as part of an exclusive multi-year overall deal with Marvel Studios. We also learned that the filmmaker will take charge of a mysterious MCU-set Disney+ series.
Both of these projects are still in the very early stages of development, but Cretton did provide some interesting updates during an interview with Collider. He doesn't give much away (he hasn't even starting writing the Shang-Chi sequel), but says he has been tossing a few "loose ideas" around, some of which were "planted as questions" in the first film.
"There are a lot of ideas that we had in the opener, and some of those ideas are planted as questions, by the end of our movie. There are things that we potentially want to explore in the future. Everything changes so much, so it’s hard to say how many of those ideas will actually make it to the finish line, but there are many of them there."
Cretton is even less forthcoming about his Disney+ plans, but does reveal that the idea for the series came to him while filming Shang-Chi.
"[Feige] and the team there definitely have a clear idea of where they’re taking the MCU, but they’re also open to pitches and things that we’re passionate about," he says when asked if he pitched the idea to Marvel Studios, or they came to him. "One of the shows that we’re creating was initially an idea that I was bouncing around with our producer while we were shooting Shang-Chi and it just happened to fit in with the trajectory of where they’re going with the franchise. So, it’s a little back and forth."
We still don't know if this show will be a Shang-Chi spinoff or a completely separate project, but the initial trade reports did mention that it's expected to be a comedy, which has led to speculation that it might be focused on Awkwafina's Katy.
Shang-Chi is now available to stream on Disney+ and hit Blu-ray earlier this week. You can check out our review here.
