Spawn creator Todd McFarlane promised a "huge" announcement regarding Blumhouse's long-in-development live-action reboot on Monday, and while it's come a day late, THR has now shared the news.

The movie, which has been in the works since 2017, has added a new writing team in the form of Scott Silver (Joker), Malcolm Spellman (The Falcon and The Winter Soldier; Captain America: New World Order) and up-and-coming scribe Matthew Mixon.

Jamie Foxx (Spider-Man: No Way Home; Django Unchained) is still attached to play the lead role of Al Simmons, aka the demonic anti-hero known as Spawn.

McFarlane was considering stepping behind the camera at one point, but seems to have had a change of heart, acknowledging that "he may not be the right person to direct, particularly now that some of the highest profile writers in the comic book movie space are involved."

“If we’ve got an A-list actor, A-list producers, A-list writers, then do you want to shoot for A-list directors, A-list cinematographers?” he tells the trade. “The answer is, ‘of course.’ Let’s keep the momentum going.”

“I grew up in Berkeley, which is a comic book city. Todd McFarlane’s SPAWN character was always one of my favorites — a Black superhero that was no bullshit, he was cool and dealt with modern issues,” adds Spellman. “Myself, Matt Mixon, and Scott Silver are pledged to honoring what Todd started and what SPAWN is at its core, delivering something that’s relevant and edgy and unlike any other superhero movie out there.”

Though the character's popularity has dwindled somewhat over the years, Image's Spawn was one of the best-selling comic books of the '90s. The 1997 movie failed to do Spawn and his various enemies and allies justice, but the HBO animated series was a lot more successful and is well worth tracking down if you haven't seen it yet.

This reboot is being developed with a R-rating in mind.

A day late for this? I figured it was a costume at least that photos just weren't ready for. How could this news not be delivered on time unless one of those folks almost pulled out then was like...nah I'm good to go.

At any rate, I'm excited to see how this turns out.

Weird mix of talent. And definitely don't like the guy who gave us the "you gotta do better" speech involved.

They were never going to let him direct. It always seemed like a delusion of his. I think that has something to do with the movie stalling for so long.

That’s cool I guess. Probably safer than McFarlane writing and directing himself. And I assume this means Spawn will feature prominently in the movie and this won’t a microscopic budget?

I think Todd should stop showing his hand until it's in production. It makes him look desperate, imo. Nobody likes that, in any industry.

But it's certainly good news for him.

Still not an official greenlight. Could easily end up in development hell (pun intended). Jordan Peele as director, would be interesting.

Dark City is also awesome by Alex Proyas, but after that, he certainly went downhill.

So after a decade or so of writing the screenplay, Todd McFarlane's big announcement is that he's hired a couple of real writers?

This is actually pretty sensible. Clever even.
He did the exact same thing with the Spawn comic. People criticised it (and all the other Image books) as being poorly writtem. All style and no substance.
So what did he do? He hired the best writers in the business:
Frank Miller
Alan Moore
Dave Sim
Neil Gaiman
Grant Morrison

Clever. Almost Stan Lee-like.

Although the writers he's chosen for his Spawn film aren't exactly the best in the business.

Then he proceeded to court for over a decade to get the rights of the characters Gaimen created for him.

Asterisk

Thank god he’s not directing it anymore. I think it’d be a good “The Boys” with more budget type streaming show. And actually have Al/Spawn be the main focus, not the weird Sam and Twitch idea he’s been tossing around for so long.

Just like the comics the movie is loudly going absolutely nowhere.
