MADAME WEB Adds EUPHORIA And THE HANDMAID'S TALE Star Sydney Sweeney In A Mystery Role

Deadline reports that Madame Web has added Euphoria breakout Sydney Sweeney to its cast. She joins Dakota Johnson (who will play the title character) in a movie that's quickly beginning to gain momentum. As is so often the case, there's currently no word on who Sweeney will be playing.

S.J. Clarkson (The Defenders) is directing the movie from a screenplay by Morbius scribes Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless.

In the comic books, Madame Web is typically portrayed as an elderly woman who is blind and linked up to a life support system that resembles a web. She has psychic abilities and frequently uses other heroes to fight her battles; is it possible that Sweeney will be one of them? If we're going to get into fan casting here, then she'd arguably make an excellent Martha Franklin, a.k.a. Spider-Woman.

The trade notes that Euphoria has resulted in Sweeney become one of the big winners from awards season, and her work in the HBO series has seen her "[jump] to the top of every major studio lists for young rising stars." Sources also reveal that "Sweeney had been weighing several offers in recent weeks but the opportunity to join Johnson in what would be the first female-centric film in this universe was too good to pass up."

It's hard not to be intrigued by Madame Web, especially as the character could easily become the Doctor Strange of Sony's Spider-Man Universe. Thanks to the Web of Life and Destiny, she might just wind up being the person responsible for bringing together the three Spider-Men again!

Madame Web doesn't currently have a release date, but will likely begin production soon.
