SPIDER-MAN Director Sam Raimi Weighs In On Doctor Octopus' Return In SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME Trailer

Alfred Molina returned as Doctor Octopus in the first trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home, and Spider-Man 2 director Sam Raimi has now shared his thoughts on what it was like to see him back in the role.

Legendary filmmaker Sam Raimi makes his Marvel Universe return next year with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, but some of the characters he brought to the big screen in his Spider-Man trilogy are also on their way to the MCU. Alfred Molina's Doctor Octopus and Willem Dafoe's Green Goblin have been confirmed, and we're 99.9% sure we'll also see Tobey Maguire's Peter Parker.

In the first trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home, we actually got to see Doc Ock back in action and it was immediately made clear that he's the same Otto Octavius from 2004's Spider-Man 2. 

SYFY Wire recently asked Raimi for his thoughts on that trailer, and it seems he was just as impressed as the rest of us. "That was beautiful. He looks great, the animation’s great. I’m assuming it’s not puppeted because when we did Doc Ock, we had puppets and animation for his octopus tentacles. But it was smooth and powerful and I loved his costume. I think it’s gonna be a great movie."

Given Doctor Strange's role in the next Spider-Man movie, you have to believe Raimi knows more about this one than he's letting on (rumours continue to persist that Maguire's Peter Parker could have a cameo role in the Doctor Strange sequel). 

Asked if he could share anything about that movie, the filmmaker decided to plead the Fifth. "They won’t let me say anything," Raimi stated. "I guess not...I’m sorry."

That's a shame, but no great surprise when that movie promises to kick open the door to the live-action version of the MCU's Multiverse. The sequel has the potential to change everything about this shared world, and it's no wonder Kevin Feige is looking to keep a tight lid on any sort of story details.

I'm so hyped for Raimi's return to the genre. We'll see if he gets to be his classic self or if Disney/Marvel will overly restrict him like they did with others that didn't fit the mold (like Edgar Wright).

Also: I desperately hope that we'll get Bruce Campbell as an alternate Mysterio, Tobey as Spider-Man and Ted Raimi. Hell, maybe even Lucy Lawless?
Obviously the first two are dependant on Sony giving their blessing but if the rumors that they want the ressurect the Raimi-verse as the playing ground for Tobey teaching Miles Morales this would indeed be possible.

@Blergh - Lucy Lawless is in the Raimi-verse. She cameo'd as one of the vox pops in the first movie. The punky woman saying "Guy with eight hands. Sounds hot."
People at the time were saying she was supposed to be a member of the Yancy Street Gang, but I don't think it was ever confirmed.

@Blergh - I don't think they'd bring Raimi back out of semi-retirement only to proceed to treat him as a "yes man" kinda director, though.

@Franshu - I agree, that's what gives me hope. I feel like Raimi has been through it before and wouldn't have come back if they didn't let him be himself. Like he seems like a guy who knows how to play ball with a studio while also letting himself shine through anyway, but I especially think if they were too restrictive he wouldn't have ever bothered.

And Feige speaks of Raimi and his work on Spider-Man with such reverence and love that I feel like he'd be likely to let Raimi have his creative freedom. Shoot, Feige witnessed firsthand what Sony put him through with Spider-Man 3.

@Blergh - Edgar was like 8 years ago, yall need to get over that. The whole thing about Marvel forcing out directors is largely overblown. You think Taika Waititi or Chloe Zhao would work with them if that were true? Cmon.

@Blergh - Edgar Wright was lost when the MCU was under the thumb of the old Marvel Creative Committee, that were more interested in playing it safe and making money than telling stories. For example, Iron Man 3 and Thor 2 were supposed to have female villains, but this committee blocked it because female villain toys don't sell. But, we shouldn't worry, Raimi and Feige worked together on the Spider-Man movies. So I'd like to think they get each other.

what's the director's job when hired by a studio:

- to do the job he/she was hired to do
or
- to do hers/his version of a film that the studio already have a vision for?

With John Watts going to Fantastic Four, i really want Raimi to take over Spider-man.

I'd love to see him handle a maturing Tom Holland Peter.

The Raimi films (Not so much 3) had such a fantastical fun whimsy about them. Perfect blend of heart + humor + spectacle. I watched them all again recently, and I really have a soft spot for those films. I still remember opening night at the theaters for part 2. It was one of those moments where the sequel absolutely surpasses expectations, and lives up to the hype.

@DarthOmega - to me if there are any movies that can be overrated AND underrated at the same time, it’s those two. Cuz if you think those movies are so great, how can you ignore the terrible acting? And you really think that acting is terrible enough, to diminish its greatness? Can’t settle. It’s a friggin seesaw.

@DarthOmega - Even though Spidey 3 was not necessarily a good movie.....at all, I still have a soft spot for it. I don't hate the ever loving hell out of it like I hate X-Men 3, for example.

@TheWalkingCuban - I hear ya, but I don't really expect Shakespeare from these flicks. I know that sounds like a cop out, but there are certain things I take with me when viewing films. If it's a dramatic period piece, I expect some semblance of historical accuracy. If it's a straight forward drama, I want to see strong performances from the actors. If it's a comedy film, the only goal it has to hit is making me laugh. If it's action, I want to see believable action depending on the rules the film, and what the world establishes. Spider-Man had comedy, action, and a certain amount of drama. All of it was earned and it wasn't thrown in haphazardly like Marvel does with one liners to undercut any real drama with an unfunny joke. Those films didn't have Oscar worthy performances, (An argument can be made for Molina lol) but they did their job.

If Jon Watts blows it (which is not totally unexpected) I hope that we can get Maguire in Doctor Strange 2 and even the crazy fever dream that would be Raimi's Spider-Man 4.

The puppeted tentacles was true movie magic which is why it still holds up today. Not a chance in hell they'll be anything but 100% CGI in NWH.

Yes and it sucks because so much work went into that and it paid off !! The mix of practical and cgi was incredible, hopefully they at least render them well in NWH!

They did a great job in Spider-Man 2 with Ock's tentacles being puppeteered practical effects, but I'm really interested to see how far they can take things with the technological advances of today.
