SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME Has Now Passed AVATAR To Become Third-Biggest Movie Ever Domestically

We knew this was the next milestone for the movie, and Spider-Man: No Way Home has now officially surpassed James Cameron’s Avatar to become the third-highest grossing release of all time domestically.

Spider-Man: No Way Home has now officially become the third highest-grossing movie of all time at the domestic box office, unseating James Cameron's mighty Avatar to claim its spot.

Analysts believed Sony Pictures' block-busting threequel had a very good chance of catching Avatar, and sure enough, after taking in an additional $1 million on Monday, the wall-crawler and his amazing friends passed the sci-fi epic's $760.5 million at the North American box office.

This is a spectacular feat, but No Way Home's unprecedented "pandemic era" performance may stop here. The movie would need to amass another $100 million in domestic ticket sales to catch Avengers: Endgame ($858 million) and claim the No. 2 spot, and quite a bit more to bump Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($936 million) to take first place.

“Though Spider-Man: No Way Home benefits from a much higher average ticket price than ‘Avatar, this does not detract from the enormity of this achievement coming during a pandemic-impacted marketplace,” says Paul Dergarabedian, a senior media analyst with Comscore. “It would have been unimaginable just a few months ago to think that the latest ‘Spider-Man’ film would even have a shot a leapfrogging over ‘Avatar,’ which has been a mainstay on box office Mt. Olympus for over a decade.”

Spider-Man: No Way Home is currently the sixth-highest grossing movie of all time globally with an astonishing $1.8 billion.
