That may be naïve of me, but that’s how I’m treating it," Garfield said when asked about how he's approaching what is surely the biggest role of his career. "I’m honestly treating it like this is a role that has meant a lot to me since I was four years old. And I have been waiting for the call since then to be given the opportunity to play with a bunch of awesome cameras and effects and to feel like I’m swinging through New York City."

The actor then went on to once again describe his childhood affection for the character and how that will play a part in his performance: "It’s a childhood fantasy come to life. But I’m just treating it like an extension of my seven-year-old self jumping for joy and climbing up doorframes. I’m just going to play to like I always have played it in my living room! It’s just an extension of that, with a bigger set, a bit more money, and a better costume. Although my mum’s homemade costume was pretty wicked."

"Its mythology. Comic books are derived from mythology. It’s ancient storytelling. It’s Shakespearean and Greek," he added when quizzed about tackling this sort of role. "Spider-Man’s struggle is the same as every young boy’s struggle. Who am I? What’s the best way to live? How can I serve something greater than what I am? Is there a purpose in this life? All of these themes...I find it just as rich. I’m so excited."

DCMF: Lol, thanks bud! :)

I loved the first two Spider-Man movies but neither Raimi or Maguire managed to really nail Peter Parker IMO. With every interview I read, this guy really does sound more and more perfect for the role...I just hope that they manage to get the tone and feel right rather than sticking Spidey in high school and going for some half assed Ultimate inspired story with a few flashy 3D effects to appeal to the Twilight crowd!

Of course, they also need to get the cast right. Hopefully we'll have some great supporting characters (such as Harry, Flash and Liz) and Gwen Stacy as the love interest without a single bit of whining and angst in sight! Who should play her? Oh yeah...

TERESA PALMER FOR GWEN STACY!!!

newbie here.

@Josh I like that he knows what he's getting himself into but don't forget to make this movie work we have to know how Marc is directing this, the director does the editing and tells the actor what to do etc. Just like Raimi wanted Macguire to play a certain way.

I'm amazed how perfect this guy is for the part, and yet no one even thought of him before he was mentioned as a candidate. He's going to be an awesome Spider-Man, and I'm betting he's going to be better than Tobey.

kalelrules is a douche.

LEE: Yeah, I saw her in The Sorcerers Apprentice (which was an awesome movie) and thought right away that she'd make a great Gwen. A few days later, she was on that list of rumoured candidates that was leaked! She's the best pick out of all those too IMO.

FYC11: Firstly, welcome! :) Secondly, I agree. I've personally heard enough from Garfield now to know that he's a great choice to play Peter but I need to hear A LOT more from Webb until I start feeling completely happy about this movie. As filming draws nearer, we'll hopefully start hearing more from him!

@JoshW luv palmer 4 gwen! she's make a really good gwen... she looks a lot like her!

idk about andrew garfield... he might make a decent spidey... but still the reboot should be in the MCU!

Josh: I have not seen The Sorcerers Apprentice, but if you say it is awesome, I might go and see it. And I agree with you, Tyler and everyone else, that AG seems to be a great choice. Check out my poll for who you would like to see as the villain in JJ Abram's Star Trek Sequel over in the news section...

otherside: Thanks - she's PERFECT for Gwen for all those reasons and more, lol! :)

6of13: I hope you enjoy it! It was a very well acted and fun action movie...exactly the sort of quality flick you'd (usually) expect from Disney to be honest! And I've just moved your Star Trek article to main so will go and take a look now!

I'm loving Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man, excellent, excellent choice. Hopefully he brings the wit and intelligence to Spider-Man that Tobey Maguire (or more so Raimi) lacked. It's a shame because watching Maguire in Pleasentville, he showed sonme of that witty attitude...he probably could have pulled it off well had it not been for Raimi's sappy directon.

Garfield's gonna own this role though, I have high hopes for this movie.

@LEE@Jason @Josh thanks

@Josh: yeah, I heard enough out of Andrew, he is not allowed to say a lot so it does sound like he is repeating himself. That's cuz he's everywhere now! There's 2 months left and hopefully we'll hear Marc Webb speak soon. But really it's hard to tell right now. Once we know the plot and the rest of the supporting cast then I'll rest easy. BTW I've been on the Palmer bandwagon for the longest, she looks like Gwen and shes a better choice than Duff or Roberts. IMO.
Can't wait till they film in NYC.

@ Josh

Completely agree. Ive been convinced that Garfield was a good pick. Its nice to have an actor express his lov for the character he's playing. It seems like all CBM actors say the same thing "Well, i didnt really read the comics as a kid". F that.

With that said, this movie will be what Webb wants it to be. Garfield appreciating the character will not make the story any better(just ask Brandon Routh). Its up to Webb and the writers. Again, i agree that we need to hear more from them before i jump on the reboot bandwagon or not.
