Andrew Garfield On Tobey Maguire And The Spider-Man Legacy!

Andrew Garfield On Tobey Maguire And The Spider-Man Legacy!

The actor talks a little about what it's like to follow in the footsteps of the last actor who portayed Peter Parker and contemplates what it might be like to mess it all up...

The British actor had this to say in an interview at the 'Young Hollywood Panel' in LA. (the video can be found by clicking on the link at the bottom of this page) With production set to start in the next few weeks, this might be the last we hear from Garfield for quite a while!

"This is a beloved character and, you know, ironically, I’m gonna be the person in the audience going...'Who cast this English fool?'"

That is something that I tell myself every night before I go to sleep: 'It's OK. It’s OK. Even though Tobey Maguire is genius, you are OK.'"

I think that it’s just another step in the legacy. And then after I do it and mess it up, someone else will come and save the day and do a fantastic job and I’ll be old and fat and bearded and smoking and upset that he’s so good."

Directed by Marc Webb and starring Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone and Rhys Ifans; the currently untitled Spider-Man reboot is set to be released on July 3, 2012!

He's gonna mess it up for sure. This whole reboot idea is a big mistake.

Production starting in a few weeks. Good. Maybe we can start getting glimpses of costume design and production design. Can't wait.

I think Garfield is going to knock this out of the park, I just hope everybody else in the cast can step up too.

Good find Josh!

Did you see this Josh? The Death of Spider-Man will actually be in Ultimate Spidey. That's good news, I didn't want to see it in ASM.

He is in the right path if he's showing his fear to step on the shoes of Tobey... and he's doing well taking the pressure out of him.

I think he'll end up doing it well

Eviltwin @ Thats good..... awesome news infact lol, they should kill all the Ultimates off! ; P

Well this interviews news to me, kinda getting to like GARFIELD even tho I've never seen him act, hopefully he'll be as good as TOBEY! :)

I don't think that he's got too much to worry about. The guy is a great actor and with a decent script (and I hope director) he will surely nail this role and be Spider-Man for a long time to come.

Eviltwin: Yeah, I saw that a little earlier! :) I too am glad that it'll have nothing to do with ASM, but it's a little disappointing to hear that Bendis and Millar will be collaborating on some convoluted Ultimate crap! Marvel really need to get Millar to do some 616 stuff...

@LEEE
I was thinking about Josh's earlier article on "Death", that ASM has too much going on and planned to "kill him off" all of a sudden. I even stated that it should be Ultimate's time, lol.

"I'm so tired of the gimmick story lines. OMD,BND,BIG TIME. Why the hell can't they just tell good stories without the bullshit. I know, it's 'cause they are still trying to attract new readers. Whatever happened to the days of when great characters with great writing drew people in?

It's too bad this is going to be ASM instead of Ultimate, he hasn't died yet has he? It should be USM's turn, lol.

Great read Josh! Glad to see some ASM comic news for a change ;)

Eviltwin - 11/10/2010, 10:58 AM"

The first thing I saw Garfield in was "Parnasus". It was an interesting and well acted movie, and he was a good part of that. Then I watch two episodes of David Tenant's Dr.Who with him in them. Not a big part, but good all the same.

IMO, a damp cardboard box could do better than Tobey in the role, lol. Garfield has nothing to worry about.

I could see Millar doing a great run on par with JMS's on ASM.

i really want this reboot to be good,we need a decent spider-man film,we've only had one spider-man 2.

thats good news i wish they could wipe everyone out of the ultimate universe.

LEEE777 - 11/16/2010, 11:42 AM
Eviltwin @ Thats where your wrong lol, TOBEY is the perfect PETER PARKER and SPIDEY 1 & 2 ruled and both two of the best cbm's ever made!

Still if GARFIELDS half as good and it don't turn Ultimate we may have a good movie! ; D

Yeah dude, I've read about two and a half Ultimate Spidey comics in my life and they wasn't good, but at least I gave 'em a shot lol, can't beat classic 616 Spidey and villains!

(Only thing I didn't like in Raimi's movies was the webshooters, there wasn't any oh and Spidey 3 lol)

I like this guy. He's modest and has a good sense of humor, which makes him a solid choice for Spider-Man, in my opinion.

@LEEE
LOL.

I've been a Spider-Man fan for about 32 years. Tobey to me was never Peter Parker/Spider-Man, he was typical Tobey. I own all the Raimi SM movies and have watched them all over and over, Spider-Man 2 is an amazing movie. I think Doc Ock was one of, if not, one of the best adatpted characters in CBM history. To me Tobey is just meh.

I came out of the theatre for Spider-Man on opening night with mixed emotions. Finally he was on the big screen but not quite right. I'm hoping the new one will get it better.

Remember, it took 4 Batman movies to get to the point where we now have 2 great Batman films.

My problem with Ultimate comics is I don't think they are necessary. Great writing on a great character is what should sell comics, not gimmicks. I have read a bit of USM back in the day, it was good writing, Bagely's art was still shit, but it wasn't for me. Although I did like the Ultimates(Avengers).

The webshooter thing never bothered me. As much as I wanted to see them, to me it wasn't a big deal, I got the reasoning behind it.

As far as the comic goes, I think bringing back the webshooters was a step back. At one point ASM was finally maturing somewhat, and I loved it, but now with BND, it seems to be going the way of the kiddie again.

@Deadpool

Thanks.

Eviltwin @ Actually we have 4 great BATMAN movies lol???

Your right tho... the Ultimate stuff isn't needed I hope for all our sakes WEBB doesn't Ultimated it because if he does, the first two SPIDEYS are gonna look like the 'GODFATHER!'

; P

Still fingers crossed this is gonna be an awesome movie!

Eviltwin - 11/16/2010, 12:24 PM
@ LEEE

Ya, the first two Burton Batman's were pretty good. I did have problems with them though, but they were a big part of my high school years. I waited in line with my brother for 6 hours just to see the first one.

I don't mind a blending of the two Marvel universes in the movies. It seems to work well in Iron Man and Hulk, but I wouldn't want an outright Ultimate adaptation.

For Garfield, I want to see some changes on the costume. The eyes being the biggest one.

Also would love to see the Bugle expanded and taken seriously and not for comic relief.

Tron Tick RULES!!! Lmao. :P

I mean it's the guy who directed 500 days of summer and it has emma stone as the love interest. It's gonna be made into a quirky teen movie.

And "Tobey is Genius"? He was pretty good in the first, but he just didn't look like he would be Peter Parker. I think it was just his voice behind the mask that made it great. Definitely not genius though.

i was one of those guys that said f the reboot but as much as sony messed up with the 3rd spidey flick they should start over. after watching what they did w/the spectacular spidey cartoon they should go that route. so far they got the right idea. gwen as the first love and finally seeing lizard on screen. i hope we get other cool villains in the next installments we haven't seen like electro and so forth.

Great find Josh! Awesome to hear they're gonna start production. I think remember hearing it was starting on December. It's cool to see he's not trying to act all suave about the role and is being honest and showing his humility. He's going to be amazing for sure.

@Eviltwin
Hoping they start revealing some hints about the looks. My mind is just salivating about how everything is going to look. Most importantly being the suit. Might have to wait for it when a teaser appears, or unless someone snaps a photo and leaks it, or Marc and Sony decide to just show it. Anyway, crossing my fingers for that first look! :)

I think this could be good. Garfield doesn't totally look the part to me but he seems funny, and realizes he's taking on a task and a half. I'm anxious to see where they take this movie.

SoulAllFlush - 11/16/2010, 2:34 PM
I like Garfield, and it will be a shame when he gets blame aimed at him. if this fails it won't be because of him.

The whole attitude around making this sequel sucks, they don't want to give up the film rights back to Disney but they can't be bothered to invest in the franchise either.

EvilTwin: Thanks for posting the link regarding the so-called "Death of Spider-Man", and clarifying that this occurs in Ultimate Spidey, NOT ASM.

Only thing- didn't they already DO a "death" of Spider-Man in the ultimate book? This was between the end of the first series and the rebooting to number 1. I hated that. The book was getting interesting, so let's ditch the tolerable artist they had for this goofy faux-manga look that makes the book hard to look at, and drop the storylines that made the book worth reading.

Reboot fine. After part 3 they needed to wipe the slate and start over. That film was crap. Just PLEASE...no friggin web shooters. Organic webbing was the best thing to come out of the Raimi spin.
