SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME Director Confident A Spider-Man/Venom Crossover Would Work - EXCLUSIVE

Comic book fans aren't convinced that the MCU's Spider-Man and Sony's Venom would work in the same movie, but Spider-Man: Far From Home director Jon Watts is confident putting them together would be a hit.

Venom may not have been a critical hit, but it was a huge success at the global box office and there continue to be rumblings about some sort of crossover movie featuring Tom Hardy's Eddie Brock and Tom Holland's Spider-Man. The latter certainly seems keen on the idea, and even Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige recently pointed out that it seems likely to happen.

During a recent chat with Spider-Man: Far From Home director Jon Watts, I asked the filmmaker if he believes the two very different franchises could be combined and he seems confident that putting Spidey and Venom together would lead to some amazing things.

"I found Venom to be so funny and I thought Tom Hardy was so great, I don't know that they are so different," he responded. "I think you put those two Toms together and you're going to see something pretty special." There's no denying that a crossover has huge potential, but it would require both Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures to put in a lot of time to make it work.

Forget The Origin Story

Venom-2

Venom's origin story was a complete mess, and while it was fun to see the Life Foundation, Carlton Drake was a terrible villain and the way Eddie ended up being bonded to his Symbiote wasn't exactly as memorable as that church scene from the comic books.

When the MCU was starting up, Marvel Studios chose to very loosely tie The Incredible Hulk into Ang Lee's Hulk and softly rebooted the franchise. Meanwhile, their new take on Spider-Man glossed over his origin story and left fans to fill in the gaps themselves. The same could easily be done with Venom when he's brought into this shared world.

Somehow tie the Symbiote into the last two Avengers movies, push Eddie into villainy after his encounter with Carnage, and have it leave him for Spider-Man (for a little while, at least) in order to set the stage for these two to eventually clash. Simple, right?

With that hole the snap tore in their dimension as Fury said no wonder Jon Watts is being cautiously open to the idea.

A Venom/Spider-man crossover in return for unlimited access to keeping Holland's Spidey in the MCU for the rest of time, as well as right of first refusal on all Spider-man villains and side characters?
