BLADE Star Mahershala Ali On "Filling [Wesley Snipes'] Shoes" As The Daywalker

Academy Award-winner Mahershala Ali is set to take over from Wesley Snipes as the Marvel Cinematic Universe's new incarnation of Blade, and the actor has now spoken about stepping into the role.

Back when rumors of a Blade reboot first began doing the rounds, many fans expressed a desire to see Wesley Snipes reprise the role, and there were early reports that the actor was in talks with Marvel Studios to return as the Daywalker.

We're not sure how close this came to becoming a reality, but we now know that Mahershala Ali will take over as Blade for a new MCU-set movie.

During an interview with Jake's Takes, the Academy Award-winning Green Book actor spoke about the responsibility of following such a fan-favorite portrayal of the character, and said that he's now looking to "earn my place" as the vampiric antihero.

"You know, what I look forward to is earning it. I look forward to earning... you know, there’s an anticipation for it, there’s an excitement for it that he owns, that Mr. Snipes owns. And so in filling his shoes, I’m just working to earn my place in this and I’m excited to get going and do the work."

Spoilers follow.

We're sure many of you have seen Eternals at this stage, but if you haven't, best stop reading now.

Ali actually made his (offscreen) MCU debut as Blade in the post-credits scene of Eternals when he dropped by to offer guidance to Dane Whitman (Kit Harington), who was about to take up the Ebony Blade. This obviously hints at a Blade/Black Knight team-up down the line, but the Daywalker is also rumored to show up in the Moon Knight Disney+ series.

This is definitely my most anticipated MCU movie and I’m liking what dude is saying. I loved him in Luke Cage and I’m hopeful this will be something special

Blade is still firmly in my top 10 CBMs but I'm excited to see Marvel's approach

It’s crazy to think somewhere out there in the MCU there’s the Fantastic Four and Blade running around…

One of the best working actors out right now and my personal favorite! He’ll absolutely kill it

Just hoping that the action and violence can match

Glad the supernatural side of the MCU is being filled out. Would love a Midnight Sons project one day.

Never watched the old Blade movies (I know, I know). Are they worth it?

@Fogs - It'd say yes. They're dated for sure, but still worth a watch. IMHO the second one is really the one to see. Frankly, you could...and probably should take a pass on/skip the 3rd one (trinity) all together. The first one is descent, though dated, and certainly worth a watch. But again, IMHO, you'd be good to watch the 2nd one.

@Fogs - I think the first movie is a classic of the superhero and action genre. People love part 2 and I do enjoy parts of it, but the CGI fight scenes are pretty bad in it(even by the standards of the time). Part 3 is godawful, but Ryan Reynolds is hilarious in it.

@Fogs - Tbh I think only the first one holds up, 2 has its moments but it’s goes a little more campy in some spots. Blade 1 is a little darker and more grounded

@Ha1frican @JoeInTheBox @musicsuperhero1 @Waddles - Thanks for the answers, guys. I'll watch 1 and 2, and depending on the mood will check the third one as well.

Hey, I watched X-Men Origins: Wolverine so I'm tempered in raw crap.

How about we have more on Mahershala Ali actually standing more up for this movie and fighting against Kevin Feige who wants to make a watered down PG version of Blade. Mahershala Ali is supposedly a fan of this character but won't do what Ryan Reynolds did for Deadpool & Hugh Jackman did for Logan and fight for an R rating, instead he's choosing to not say anything and let Marvel and Feige walk all over him very disappointing.

@DesiSpiderman - No I don't at all with the exception of a few MCU movies I like this guy has watered down and kiddified Marvel and most the characters and stories I loved. Blade is a character I'm a huge fan of and have I expectations for this movie and so far Mahershala Ali is being a coward.

@John456 - Let’s atleast let the movie come out before we judge.

Mahershala Ali was wasted as CottonMouth in Luke Cage. It's frustrating. He was good, but so underutilized. Looking forward to seeing him as Blade. Hopefully Snipes gets a cameo...that would be a fun nod.
