It looks like 2017 won't be the only time in the near future we a solo Spider-Man adventure on the big screen.

Just a few short moments ago, at Sony's CinemaCon presentation, chairman Tom Rothman announced that Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (The Lego Movie; 21 Jump Street) will direct, write, and produce an animated Spider-Man film! Rothman went on to reveal that the upcoming film will be set in an independent universe, and will run concurrently with their highly anticipated live-action Marvel Studios collaboration: "the film will explore the graphic roots of the character and co-exist with our live-action entries." He also more or less confirmed, what almost everyone already assumed, that the new teenage Spidey will in fact make his debut in 2016's Captain America: Civil War.

The animated Spider-Man feature is expected to hit theaters July 20, 2018 and Rothman concluded his piece on Spidey by describing the project as "f***ing awesome."

Check out the official press release from Sony Pictures below:

LAS VEGAS, April 22, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- On July 20, 2018, Phil Lord & Christopher Miller, the directors of The Lego Movie, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, and 21 and 22 Jump Street, are taking Spider-Man back to his graphic roots with the first-of-its-kind animated Spider-Man feature, it was announced today at CinemaCon by Tom Rothman, chairman of the Sony Pictures Entertainment Motion Picture Group. The film will exist independently of the projects in the live-action Spider-Man universe, all of which are continuing.

Lord & Miller are masterminding the project, writing the treatment and producing the film.

As previously announced, Spider-Man will next appear in a live-action Marvel film from Marvel's Cinematic Universe (MCU). Sony Pictures will thereafter release the next installment of its $4 billion Spider-Man franchise, on July 28, 2017, a live-action film being produced by Kevin Feige at Marvel and Amy Pascal, who oversaw the franchise launch for the studio 13 years ago. The animated film from Lord & Miller, dated July 20, 2018, has Avi Arad, Matt Tolmach, and Pascal also serving as producers.

Spider-Man, embraced all over the world, is the most successful franchise in the history of Sony Pictures, with the five films having taken in more than $4 billion worldwide.

They've done the Lego Movie and 22 Jump Street in the same year so they are capable.

It better not co-exist with the Amazing Spiderman movies. That will confuse the crap outta people if the new spiderman is already out.

If they're only writing and producing hopefully they get a chance to put some work in on 'The Flash'.

Not feeling this at all. Animated movies within the Marvel Cinematic Universe seems like it'll ruin the immersive illusion for me, and a year after his first solo outing will be a bit too much in my opinion. No doubt this'll turn out glorious because it's [frick]ing Phil Lord and Chris Miller, but my initial reaction is just 'No.'.

Hell, Marvel should take the chance to use animated movies and bring more obscure heroes. The Runaways would've been cool.

Ok look. Is Miller and Lord talented and good directors? [frick] yea.

BUT I STILL DO NOT [frick]ING WANT THIS FILM AT ALL!!!!!!!

YOU ARE ALREADY REBOOTING SPIDER-MAN 2 YEARS AFTER THE SHITFEST THAT WAS TASM2!!!!!!!!

THAT'S WAY TOO SOON!!!!!

PEOPLE WILL GET BURNED OUT WITH SPIDER-MAN FILMS!!! BY 2017, WE WILL HAVE HAD SPIDER-MAN ON THE BIG SCREEN 7 TIMES IN 15 YEARS!!!!!

[frick] THIS MOVIE, [frick] ANY SPIN OFF FILMS, [frick] TOM ROTHMAN, [frick] SONY, [frick] THIS SPIDER-MAN UNIVERSE, [frick] IT ALL!!!

HELL YOU KNOW WHAT'S FUNNY? YOU COULD MAKE A BETTER CINEMATIC UNIVERSE WITH HELLBOY THEN YOU CAN WITH SPIDER-MAN AND THAT'S A FACT!

Josh Keaton for the voice of Spidey.

The man deserves it for Spectacular Spider-Man not getting a 3rd season.

Ah, okay. It's independent. Still just seems unnecessary. I hope this won't be too big a problem with the Sony/Marvel deal.

At least they got these guys to work on it.

MrCBM56 - 4/22/2015, 7:23 PM
Apparently this was planned Pre-Marvel deal.

Mrcool210 - 4/22/2015, 7:23 PM
I mean WTF? Hearing miller and lord doing this movie gave me so much hope. But if AVI [frick]ING ARAD is involved my anticipation went right down the drain. Then again, Unlike Webb Miller and Lord arn't pushovers. They hopefully won't take arads shit.
Mrcool210
Mrcool210 - 4/22/2015, 7:24 PM
This is what confuses me most though.
"The film will exist independently of the projects in the live-action Spider-Man universe, all of which are continuing. "

Does that mean Sinister Six? Kraven, Carnage, 2099 and all of those [frick]ing movies from those wiki leaks emails are still happening? Are they in the Tasm universe or the mcu? IM SO CONFUSED!!!!

I hope it's at least filmed with motion-capture technology similar to The Adventures Of Tintin.
Mrcool210
Mrcool210 - 4/22/2015, 7:28 PM
Hell even more questions arise. More of those emails reveal this film would have adapted Spider Verse. How the hell are they going to do that for the first animated spider-man movie? And it's not connected to the MCU? That's going to be confusing for audiences. Really Miller and Lord being attached seems to be the only good thing about this film.
MrCBM56
MrCBM56 - 4/22/2015, 7:29 PM

@KingPatel Apparently the film is independent towards the MCU, and they aren't directing. Sony just wants them to.
