We've seen quite a bit of promo art for the upcoming Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse sequel recently, and some new Across the Spider-Verse tie-in merchandise has now confirmed that Scarlet Spider will appear.
Several different characters have held this mantle in the comics, but based on the costume this fella is wearing, we're going to assume he's Ben Reilly.
Created in a lab by the Jackal, Ben was a clone of Peter Parker who was introduced as a foe before ultimately becoming a close ally. After debuting in Gerry Conway's The Amazing Spider-Man run back in the '70s, Reilly was seemingly killed in the same issue, but returned years later for the highly divisive "Clone Saga."
Check out the promo art below, which also gives us another look at the villainous Johnathon Ohnn, AKA Spot.
Specific plot details are still under wraps, but the follow-up has been confirmed to feature multiple new incarnations of the wall-crawling hero. Peter B. Parker, Gwen Stacy, Spider-Ham, Spider-Man Noir, and SP//dr are expected to return, and Insecure star Issa Rae will play Jessica Drew, aka Spider-Woman.
Spider-Man 2099, aka Miguel O´Hara (Oscar Isaac), will also have a more prominent role after debuting in the first movie's post-credits scene, and previous merchandise art confirmed Spider-Punk, aka Hobie Brown.
Joaquim Dos Santos (Voltron: Legendary Defender; The Legend of Korra), Kemp Powers (Soul), and Justin K. Thompson will direct. Phil Lord and Chris Miller penned the script along with David Callaham (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings). Lord and Miller will also produce with Amy Pascal, Avi Arad, and Christina Steinberg.
Miles returns for the next chapter of the Oscar-winning Spider-Verse saga for an epic adventure that will transport Brooklyn’s full-time, friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man across the Multiverse to join forces with Gwen Stacy and a new team of Spider-People to face off with a villain more powerful than anything they have ever encountered.
Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse Part 1 recently moved from October 7, 2022 to June 2, 2023, while Part 2 won't swing into theaters until March 29, 2024.
