SPIDER-MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE Reveal May Have Major Implications For BEYOND THE SPIDER-VERSE - SPOILERS

A scan from a new Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse art of book seemingly reveals some intriguing new information that could have massive implications for next year's Beyond the Spider-Verse.

An image from the new Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse art of book has been shared online, and the accompanying character description appears to change everything we thought we knew about the final moments of Sony Pictures' animated sequel.

Major spoilers ahead.

At the end of Across the Spider-Verse, we get the big reveal that Miles Morales actually returned to an alternate timeline when he was attempting to get back to his own, and in this reality, Miles lost his father instead of his uncle and became the Prowler instead of Spider-Man.

Miles is captured by his uncle Aaron, and Prowler reveals himself just as Miguel O'Hara and the other Spiders arrive on Earth-42. Morales asks his dark counterpart to let him go so that he can save his father, to which he replies, "why would I do that?"

So, this Miles Morales Variant is a villain... right? Not necessarily!

The fact that this version of Prowler is referred to as a Vigilante suggests that he and Aaron are crime fighters, not criminals, and may actually wind up aiding our Miles in his fight against Spider-Man 2099 and The Spot in next year's Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.

In Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, after reuniting with Gwen Stacy, Brooklyn’s full-time, friendly neighborhood Spider-Man is catapulted across the Multiverse, where he encounters a team of Spider-People charged with protecting its very existence. However, when the heroes clash on how to handle a new threat, Miles finds himself pitted against the other Spiders and must redefine what it means to be a hero so he can save the people he loves most.

The confirmed voice cast includes Shameik Moore, Hailee Steinfeld, Oscar Isaac, Jake Johnson, Issa Rae, Jason Schwartzman, Daniel Kaluuya, Shea Whigham, Jorma Taccone, Luna Lauren Vélez, and Brian Tyree Henry.

Not opposed to the idea…. BUT… this reminds me of bad tv show cliffhangers where they completely neuter and nullify the effect by resolving the cliffhanger/explaining the misconception (that they led us to believe) like ten seconds into the next episode.

So I hope they handle it better than that.

Also seems a bit odd if hes a good guy vigilante that hed say “why would I let you go? ” and say its not his dad when miles says he wants to go save his father?

@ReverseFlasher -
I'd guess this is just so they don't have an evil version of Miles Morales. They probably want this version to be redeemable somehow e.g. Miles undoes everything and this version of Miles becomes the hero as he was meant to be bit by the Spider originally.

@ReverseFlasher - replying to my own comment lol, but maybe hes not letting miles go because he wants his help with the sinister 6 cartel

@ReverseFlasher - because he’s a vigilante? Not everyone is a nice hero Batman would 100% capture someone who just popped up in his universe looking exactly like him asking for his family

@ShimmyShimmyYA - someone who looked like his clone, and said he wanted to get back to his universe so he could save martha? I think not.

Lol sorry couldnt resist

@ReverseFlasher - the "why would I let you go?" stuff could possibly be him assuming 1610 Miles is actually some kind of villain if this twist is accurate

@ReverseFlasher - he definitely would until he figured out what was going on

Kinda like prowler miles is doing

Given the aspects introduced, I think the only solution would be if Miles prevents the multiverse machine from being made in the first place. A 'rewrite' being the solution to 'canon events'.

This means he goes back to a normal life, but he's no longer got his powers along with some other small changes such as his Uncle potentially being alive, his universes Spider-man being alive again and captured Kingpin, etc...

Perhaps even show the multiverse Spider-men remembering Miles, so we know what he did was appreciated and made a difference.

I never thought he was a villain. At the very least an anti hero or intimidated participant . We know the Sinister 6 Cartel runs the city. I thought 42 Miles was either in the employ of the Cartel to survive or fighting back against them as a guerilla fighter of sorts. I am sure he's a hard edged vigilante, sharpened by the world he resides in.

@GhostDog - maybe like a punisher Jr

Without the killing but definitely brutal

@ShimmyShimmyYA - Yea. Even in the brief time we spent with him he seems cold. Wouldn't be shocked if he kills his enemies without a second thought.

Hasn't the Prowler always been a vigilante in the comics. I know for sure that Hobie Brown has stepped in for Spider-Man on more than a few occasions. Personally I think the only major threat is the Spot and as for Miguel I think he might be the one who sacrifices himself to save miles and the rest.

Pretty sure they should’ve named him Kilometers Moraless to avoid confusion.

RIP Alan Arkin (89) He had an understated, relaxed genius to everything he did. An immense range of important characters. But always loved him as "Peevy" Peabody in 'The Rocketeer (91).' For me, a flawless, comic-book movie.

Somebody better tell this guy that a vigilante is still a criminal.

Look, I know that superhero media has made taking the law into your own hands look heroic, but being a vigilante isn't a hero. That's a criminal. It's against the law.

Now yes spiderman is also technically a vigilante, but we don't know how this version of the prowler is being a vigilante. It could be basically like spiderman (though why not call him a superhero then), could be another Travis bickle type.

@Midnaslament - ...literally all I'm saying is vigilante doesn't mean he's not a villain because it's actually a crime.

That's actually a pretty cool twist and I really wish it hadn't been revealed a year (or, more likely, three years) early in a tie in book...

@AC1 - I figured as much while watching honestly. I immediately thought it's oidd how these guys never actually did anything evil beyond being suspicious of Miles, which... of course they would be.
TheMandalorian
TheMandalorian - 6/30/2023, 1:23 PM
Not against this. But it sounds like they were scared to make him an evil villain.

I mean, all the members of the Spider Society are also vigilantes and they don't want to help Miles save his dad either.

Maybe he’s like a Thomas Wayne type vigilante or he’s more of a self-serving anti-hero vigilante like Catwoman?

Someone else already said it, but he better be pretty antagonistic and not have this cliffhanger unravel in the first moments of the next one.
