SPIDER-MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE Swings On To Rotten Tomatoes With 94%

The review embargo lifted for Sony Pictures' Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse earlier today (you can check out our verdict here), and, not too surprisingly after those glowing social media reactions, the majority of critics are very impressed with the animated sequel.

With 87 reviews counted, the Into the Spider-Verse follow-up is currently sitting at a spectacular 94% on Rotten Tomatoes, which means that, so far, only five negative write-ups have been added.

Even the "rotten" reviews single out certain things they did enjoy (aside from one which describes the movie as "a barrage of inconsistent visuals that often look like ugly comic-book graffiti"), but it seems the unique visual style on display simply isn't to everyone's liking, while the Multiversal aspects also came in for some criticism.

For the most part, though, Across the Spider-Verse is another hit with the critics. Will cinemagoers feel the same way? We'll find out when the movie arrives in theaters this weekend.

You can keep an eye on the reviews at the link below.

In Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, after reuniting with Gwen Stacy, Brooklyn’s full-time, friendly neighborhood Spider-Man is catapulted across the Multiverse, where he encounters a team of Spider-People charged with protecting its very existence. However, when the heroes clash on how to handle a new threat, Miles finds himself pitted against the other Spiders and must redefine what it means to be a hero so he can save the people he loves most.

The confirmed voice cast includes Shameik Moore, Hailee Steinfeld, Oscar Isaac, Jake Johnson, Issa Rae, Jason Schwartzman, Daniel Kaluuya, Shea Whigham, Jorma Taccone, Luna Lauren Vélez, and Brian Tyree Henry.

Yes the score is accurate. It was a good movie all around. A little too fast paced in those Spide-people team ups and even more during the beginning of the 3rd act of the movie and although it sometimes could feel like a headache how all of the animation is just pushed in front of you (or maybe I was sitted too close to the screen? I doubt it but I just feel like a little dizzy) the story is pretty engaging.

Good cliffhanger with both stakes and hopeful vibes for Beyond the Spider-Verse.

@NinnesMBC - It took me a few minutes to get used to the low framerate in the first movie, what is the problem with this one, it goes "faster"? You are not the first person I hear saying this, and I get motion sickness sometimes.

@TheHumanSpider2 - It's funny because I don't really remember having this kind of issue with the first one. It must be because there are a lot of specific art styles and animation for each of the characters, especially in the case of Spider-Punk. It's said that they spent around 2 years working on him.

And the movie sure has a very fast pacing the majority of times, especially when the scenes involve more than one character. Many talk over the other ones so I'm trying to understand all that the characters are saying while paying attention to all that's going around them.

I guess the viewer experience improves if one watches it more than once but I do think I got some of that motion sickness in some parts. I appreciated the quiet moments when it was just the characters talking slowly in non fast-paced scenes.

I already knew it was going to be #1 of the year with Guardians of the galaxy vol 3 a close second. Everything else afterwards is competing for 3rd place as far as I'm concerned.

With Spiderverse coming out and the international market saying no, it looks like The Little Mermaid is chum.

That’s what happens when you actually try to make a good movie, and not just loud noises and bright colors. DC and Marvel should take note

@PatientXero - Considering Marvel Studios has more hits than Sony's Marvel nonsense, this doesn't make a lot of sense. Spider-verse is Sony's only quality Marvel content right now. And I mean, is GotG3 just loud noises and bright colors?... It seems to be performing quite well.

What I hate is. . . too much spider-man, spider-people, spider-things! Enough already. And that "animation style" is spider-annoying.

Good thing that Disney has very little to do with this film. Hence the quality.
Variant
Variant - 6/1/2023, 10:35 AM
@Supersperm - Because Sony is known for their quality. Morbius...

And this isn't to take away from this film. This seems to be Sony's lane. But GotG3 is performing very well, too. And also, Marvel Studios is still the most successful film franchise in history.

Personally, I wasn't sure how or even if they could top Into The Spiderverse, but somehow they did. The story telling, the voice acting, the direction and of course that stunningly unique animation style all got dialed up in this sequel. It is a literal work of art. This is best picture Oscar level stuff, and I don't mean just in the animated feature category, I mean like the Best Picture category. I cannot wait for the next chapter in this story.
