SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE Exceeding Expectations At The Box Office; Could Top $40 Million

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is having quite the weekend and based on the latest numbers, it looks increasingly likely that it could potentially top $40 million before the end of business Sunday.

After earning $12.6 million on Friday, Sony's critically-acclaimed Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is swinging to an impressive $35 million to $40 million opening weekend, which would make it the largest debut for an animated movie ever in the month of December.

While conservative estimates are placing the film's debut at or around $35.5 million, it's starting to look increasingly likely that it could actually top $40 million, possibly even reaching $42 million before the end of business tomorrow night. A major win for both Marvel Entertainment and Sony Pictures as the film gears up for what should be an extremely leggy and lucrative run through the end of the year.

Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey and Rodney Rothman co-directed the animated feature, which is currently boasting a 97% approval rating on review aggregator RottenTomatoes, an 87 on Metacritic, and a spectacular A+ CinemaScore; while Phil Lord and Rodney Rothman penned the script. Lord also produced the picture with Chris Miller.

Meanwhile, Clint Eastwood's The Mule is taking aim at second place with approximately $17-18 million while it looks like Universal's Mortal Engines will be one of the year's biggest disappointments as it heads toward a likely fifth-place finish with an estimated $7-9 million.

@MrCamw1 - Yeah, they developed new software just for this movie and it's like nothing we've seen before. Ralph 2 was ok, it's best moments were the Disney Princess scenes, I loved Incredibles 2 but this is just on another level. They earned that Oscar.

Have to wonder if this is doing well because of Venom’s success, and people are on a Spider-Man high right now...or if it still would do well without it because it’s actually a solid movie? 🤔

@LNBfett12 - seeing that it has a 97% on RT my guess is people are curious why a good number of reviewers are saying it’s the best spiderman movie ever!

@whynot - It is the best one yet (IMO). There are things you can do in animation that just don’t translate with live action (Spider Pig, anyone). Plus, the humor was ON POINT! Spider Man’s ambivalence about wanting kids was a great running joke. also, that after credits scene!!!

This might just be the best animated film of the 2010s for me... sure, it will take some rewatches to decide (and there's going to be a lot of them, for sure) but I really really loved it.

Happy to see it exceed expectations, but it still deserves so much more! One of the best films of the year

Saw this at an early screening last week. It was brilliant. I absolutely loved it. Only thing that I didnt really like was that things in the far distance were blurry and have this weird green and red aura around them like you were watching a 3d movie without 3d glasses. It was kinda distracting and frustrating in a few shots when I really wanted to take in the visuals of the city behind the characters. It sorta forced you to focus on the characters and I didnt really like that creative decision personally. But that's kind of a nit pick because the movie is a work of art.

I'm going to be seeing Aquaman tonight. Amazon Prime early access screening!

@ArthurFleck - I agree about your issue. A few of the people in my screening were confused if it was supposed to be a 3D movie or not. It was really distracting at times.

That said, the movie is still near perfect
