Kraven the Hunter and Venom 3 have both been delayed by Sony Pictures, making it easy to forget that Madame Web is still scheduled to arrive in theaters next February. That's a little over three months away and, aside from set photos, nothing has been officially released from the movie.
The first trailer is expected to swing online this week and, in the meantime, we have a leaked logo for the Marvel Comics adaptation.
What does it reveal? Not much, though we do see lots of webbing and some iconic New York landmarks. The film was primarily shot in the Big Apple, so that setting isn't exactly a surprise, but the colour scheme immediately reminds us of the Julia Carpenter version of Madame Web rather than Cassandra Webb. If we had to hazard a guess, this movie is going to introduce an amalgamation of both characters.
However, it's previously been reported that lead star Dakota Johnson is playing Webb, with Sydney Sweeney cast as Julia, so time will tell on that front. Mattie Franklin, Anya Corazon, Mary Parker, and Uncle Ben are among the other Marvel characters expected to appear.
Morbius' writers somehow talked themselves into being given another job by Sony, and along with a roster of female Spider-Heroes, we're anticipating seeing them introduce a pregnant Mary Parker as she's hunted down by Ezekiel Sims.
What that means for Peter Parker is hard to say, but we're hoping he wasn't sent to Earth-616 and this is just Sony's way of having its own Variant of the web-slinger (the story is set in the early 2000s, meaning their Spidey would be in his late teens/early twenties in the present day).
Talking earlier this year, Madame Web producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura dropped a few hints about what to expect when he said, "It’s a different kind of movie in that universe. It’s almost, in a way, more of a thriller." He'd later say the movie, "[is] not an action piece, because, in a way, [Madame Web’s] skill set is not conducive to an action piece."
Adding that the character's "clairvoyance is a tricky skill set," di Bonaventura added that Sony is looking to keep as many of the movie's secrets under wraps as possible. This logo clearly wasn't among them!
Madame Web features a cast that's led by Dakota Johnson as the title character, with Adam Scott, Emma Roberts, Sydney Sweeney, Celeste O'Connor, Isabela Merced, Tahar Rahim, Mike Epps, and Zosia Mamet set to join her.
S.J. Clarkson (The Defenders) is directing Madame Web from a screenplay by Morbius scribes Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless. As of now, the movie is expected to swing into theaters on February 16, 2024.
