Cameras are now rolling on Sony Pictures' Madame Web movie in Boston, and although some recent set photos appeared to confirm that Dakota Johnson will play Julia Carpenter, the rest of the main characters remain shrouded in mystery.
Rumors have been doing the rounds that Sydney Sweeney could be playing Black Cat, but the Emmy-nominated Euphoria star wasn't about to give anything away during an interview with THR. She did, however, drop a couple of new details.
Sweeney couldn't speak about the "SPUMC" film to any significant degree, but she did discuss her preparation for the role, confirming that she's been undergoing "fight training, movement training and something called Reformacore Pilates, and that she was drawn to the film because she liked the personal struggles that the character goes through.”
Pretty vague as hints go, but at least we know that her character will see action, which could support the rumor that Sweeney will indeed be playing Felicia Hardy (though there are obviously numerous other possibilities).
Madame Web has assembled a very impressive cast, and there's have been reports that it was actually developed as a team-up film with Johnson's clairvoyant lead sharing the spotlight with a number of other female heroes. That remains to be seen, but the trades certainly seem to think there's more to the project than meets the eye.
The movie also stars Emma Roberts, Isabela Merced and Celeste O'Connor. S.J. Clarkson (The Defenders) is directing from a screenplay by Morbius scribes Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless.
Madame Web was recently given an official release date, and is set to hit theaters on July 7, 2023.
