Sony Developing Secret Marvel Movie Possibly Centered On MADAME WEB With S.J. Clarkson Attached To Direct

According to a new report, Sony has enlisted The Defenders and Jessica Jones director S.J. Clarkson to develop a secret Marvel movie, possibly centered on one of Spider-Man's many mentors: Madame Web!

Variety is reporting that Sony Pictures is in the very early stages of developing a secret new Marvel movie, set in their burgeoning live-action Spider-Verse, and while there's nothing official, the early buzz is that it will be centered on one of Spider-Man's most trusted allies: Madame Web.

S.J. Clarkson, who helmed episodes of Marvel's The Defenders and Marvel's Jessica Jones, will direct the upcoming spinoff. No word yet on who will pen the script.

While details are murky at best, the studio is reportedly courting big names for the part with 6x Academy Award-nominee Amy Adams (Man of Steel; Justice League) and Academy Award-winner Charlize Theron (The Fate of the Furious; The Old Guard) rumored to be at the top of their wishlist, although it should be noted that no one has committed nor has anyone even met for the role just yet.

The report adds that Sony may be looking to lock down an actress first before seeking out a writer so that the film can be developed around the star.

The comics version of Madame Web is generally depicted as an elderly woman with myasthenia gravis and is almost always seen depicted attached to a life support system that looked like a spider web, which keeps her out of action and leaves the dirty work to good ol' Peter Parker.

Due to her not actually taking part in any of crimefighting in the comics, it is believed this potential film will introduce a considerably different version of the character, perhaps more similar to the Julie Carpenter iteration introduced in the Ultimate Spider-Man animated series.

So they really want to make a Madame Web movie? Like really? Is anyone here a fan of Madame Web?

@Oskir - She is a great SIDE character. Although I only know her from the old Spider-Man animation.

A Zack Snyder extended cut being announced and an ill advised Sony CBM entering production.

It's the late 2016 flashback I always wanted

They're really grasping at straws with this Spider-Verse. I suppose we'll be getting a movie about The Spot next?

Cynthia Erivo can be a great Madame Web.

Because everyone outhere is crying out for a Madame Web movie, I couldn't possibly think of any other Spider-Man villains I would like to see more.

@marvel72 - I'm hoping this means they couldn't go for the bigger names because Feige wants to use them.

More hot garbage from an unconnected Sony-verse of money grabs

Still haven’t and won’t ever watch Venom.. ditto w/ Morbius and Black & Silver or Kraven or Madem Web or Spider-Gwen

I don’t care what they make, how much they spend, who they cast, or how go it actually turns out. It’s all hot garbage.

I’ll wait for all of these characters to be done right, by Marvel, which will end up happening at some point.

Even if Marvel or I should say Disney has to buy Sony..

Just like the X-men would never go back to Marvel, or the F4 and how we would NEVER see the Snyder cut.. too many nay sayers

It could be years, or decades even.. but I’ll watch the marvel versions..

Bc Sony is pumping out nothing but unconnected garbage

Just my opinion.

Everyone else can salivate all they want

Stop with this. Can we please let Venom 2 and Morbius bomb so this does not happen? This literally reeks of a cash grab.

Unlike some people I’m not against Sony making Marvel movies. They own the rights. Of course they are going to make movies based upon those lucrative rights and Sony has made good movies before so they can do it again. Now I don’t understand Madame Web as one of those movies. Jessica Drew Spider-woman seems like a no brainer. Black Cat has a great name and a great look and really fun power that could make for an entertaining as hell heist movie. Silver Sable is a bad ass international mercenary with flair. The possibilities with her are endless. But Madame Web? The lady who sits in a chair? They’ll have to totally reinvent the character which doesn’t usually end well and seems pointless when there are great characters sitting there being unused.

However unsurprisingly because of my deep love for the era of Avengers/Avengers West Coast she was involved in I have a great affinity for the character of Julia Carpenter and since the name Spider-woman is taken (hopefully) and they might not like the name Arachne they can create some amalgamation of all that and her version of Madame Web and make something cool.

I actually like these comic book movies with the more obscure characters. Show me something/someone different.

@Philvis - You know, I was gonna originally comment with a, "But why, though?". You actually make a valid point - obscurity means less expectations to live up to, and by extension, potential creative freedom to go wild.
Thanks, dude.

@repulse93 - I'm not predicting greatness, but hey, could end up being something special.

I could see her as a major player in Spider-verse 2 similar to the old cartoon or like in the Shattered Dimensions game from a while back and bringing all of the spiders together to face a new threat. In a solo movie.. Nope.
