Spider-Man has been rebooted and caused a big fuss online and freaked a lot of people out (in good ways mostly). Here's my list of who I believe should be cast in the new film and the reasons behind them.
Logan Lerman as Peter Parker
Apparently Marvel and Sony are eying Logan and Dylan O'Brian, whom both I think would be great, but I'm going to side with Lerman for Spidey. He has that innocence that we associate with his early roles in The Perks of Being a Wallflower and Fury. He's great at evolving on screen as well, which is definitely needed for the role. And he's only 23, which does sound a bit old to be playing a 15 year old, but compared to what we've had before with Tobey and Garfield, it's not too shabby. There are a ton of great actors out there perfect to play Spidey but I think Logan Lerman rises above them.
Zoey Deutch as Mary Jane Watson
She's come off her leading role in last year's Vampire Academy, which wasn't the hit many producer's hoped it would be, but it did give Zoey Deutch a chance to show people what she has. She has the charm of MJ and seems like she could play it a bit edgier than we've seen on screen before. She'll be seen by more in Richard Linklater's new film "That's What I'm Talking About". I also do think Shailene Woodley would be awesome in the role, but for the sake of it, I'm throwing out a new, fresh name.
Elle Fanning as Gwen Stacy
Emma Stone killed it as Gwen, and it will be hard to follow in those footsteps. I think the new film should go for a different approach to the character, more like what we saw in The Spectacular Spider-Man cartoon from 2008, where she's Peter's nerdy best friend. There's no denying Elle Fanning has awesome range, with films like Ginger and Rosa, Somewhere and Maleficent under her belt. She's 16, which fits into the younger take the film will be going for and I can't think of anybody else who could play her.
Ben Rosenfield as Harry Osborn
James Franco and Dane DeHaan both played Harry great and completely differently. I can see Marvel wanting to lean more towards the jock, popular version of Osborn more akin to Franco's as they probably want to avoid too many comparisons with TASM2, and Ben Rosenfield would be perfect for it. He's done great work in Boardwalk Empire, and had a small but impressive role in A Most Violent Year and is totally ready to hit the mainstream. This guy is talented, and if he can play Harry anything like he played Willie Thompson on Boardwalk, we're in for a treat.
Jamie Lee Curtis as Aunt May
This is a pretty common reoccurrence among the Fancasting community and there's good reason for it. We've all seen the tired, frail Aunt May before, so why not change things up and get the younger, more active May similar to the Ultimate Spiderman cartoon. Jamie Lee Curtis has had some amazing roles over her career and I'm certain she'd bring a whole new Aunt May to the table.
Michael Keaton as Norman Osborn
Michael Keaton is awesome. He was Batman, then he was Birdman. He's just gotten his second wind and playing a character who not only is Spider-Man's main antagonist, but a character deeply integrated in the entire Marvel universe, would be a wise move for the man. Keaton has that brooding force that Norman shows at face value, but that maniacal side he brought to Birdman would be perfect for the Green Goblin. I personally don't think he should become the Goblin in this film, but he's an important figure in Peter's life and it would be a mistake to leave him out of this film.
Ok here is the tricky part. Who will the villain be for the next Spider-Man film? I've selected 3 choices, only one should be in it, but I'm uncertain on who it should be. First up we have:
Option 1: Wagner Moura as Otto Octavius/Dr. Octopus
If SOny is keen on setting up the Sinister Six, it would be wise to introduce Doctor Octopus in the first film. As long as they take a different approach to Spiderman 2, Doc Oc could be awesome. I always liked the idea of the OsCorp employee being involved in some kind of accident and coming after Norman Osborn with Spider-Man having to come and save him. Octavius should be played by Wagner Moura, who most have probably only seen in Elysium, as have I. He left a lasting impression though, and his upcoming Netflix series playing Pablo Escobar has me intrigued. If he can play that right, I'm certain that he would nail Doc Oc.
Option 2: Sharlto Copley as Kraven
Another option is to go with Kraven and do Kraven's Last Hunt. Personally, I'd be for that in the sequel but I'm laying down options, people. I'm honestly not some die-hard Elyisum fan, but I could help but imagine Copley in this role. Sure, Kraven is usually Russian (I think), but why not South African? It would be different, but in my opinion, better. The idea of a Russian villain in cinema is getting tired. Copley would kill it in this role. Elyisum did give him a juicy, somewhat campy villain role and it worked well for him.
Option 3: Bill Hader as Mysterio
Mysterio is a villain fans have been clammering to see for years now, so it makes sense to bring him into Spider-Man's big return. The illusions he creates would make for great spectacle and would be a real challenge for Parker to solve. Bill Hader is a very talented man, obviously from his many years on SNL and especially in The Skeleton Twins. I love the idea of Hader putting on different voices for the role, and with his star on the rise, it makes sense to put him in the fishbowl.
Lily Collins as Felicia Hardy/Black Cat
Considering this film isn't an origin story, I don't see why the film can't introduce characters that Spider-man has encountered during his time before the film takes place. I think Black Cat would be a great character to have around because she's not necessarily a villain and you could introduce her in passing without Spider-Man having to fight. With a bunch of decent films under her belt including The Blind Side and Stuck In Love opposite Logan Lerman, Lily Collins seems like an appropriate choice.
SUPPORTING CHARACTERS:
These character's wouldn't necessarily get much screen-time, but they are important figures in Peter Parker's world.
From Left to Right:
Keith Stanfield as Flash Thompson
I know its easy to jump to the stereotypical bully type when thinking about Flash, but I think that they should take a different direction. Having impressed as the tough, agressive and secretly thoughtful Marcus in Short Term 12, Keith Stanfield would add a whole new dimension to Flash and eventually Agent Vemon if they go down that path.
Kiersey Clemons as Liz Allen
Liz is a pretty prominent character in The Spectacular Spider-Man and due to the high school setting of the 2017 film, I think its important to open up Peter's friendship circle. Clemons was pretty cool in Transparent and would be an awesome Liz Allen.
Britt Lower as Betty Brant
If you watch Man Seeking Woman, you know she's pretty funny and held her own with her own solo episode. Betty has to be at the Daily Bugle, and Britt Lower would probably best Elizabeth Banks (even though its a tiny role)
Donald Glover as Robbie Robinson
Ok, so I'm thinking that when Peter gets his first job at the Bugle that Robbie is his mentor/friend he makes there, so it makes sense that he's a younger, more relatable guy. Donald Glover wont be able to play Spiderman (he's 30), but he can be a part of the world. He'd be perfect as Peter's ally at the Bugle.
Did I forget anybody??
JK SImmons as JJ Jameson
Thoughts?
