Should Donald Glover Be Given A Chance For Spider-Man?

Should Donald Glover Be Given A Chance For Spider-Man?

A grassroots campaign is forming on the social networks for an altogether different take on our favorite webhead.

Recently it was rumored that casting for the reboot of Spider-Man was down to 5 actors. All are young looking actors with varying acting experience. None of them are Donald Glover. Glover is encouraging his fans to use the hash tag #donald4spiderman in tweets to spread the word. There is also a facebook page Donald Glover 4 Spiderman!! picking up steam as well.

A few film blogs have started to pick this story up. One of the most respected in the industry, SlashFilm (Peter Sciretta) had this to say:
"At the exact moment I’m publishing this article on Sunday night, the #donald4spiderman tag is popping up on over 100 new tweets every 60 seconds. Seems like a lot of people on the internets think its an inspired idea."

Donald Glover is an actor/writer who's most notable roles have been in NBC comedies Community and 30 Rock where he has also served as a writer.

From the comments at other blogs and twitter feeds I was seeing, many are saying to give him a chance and that this is a fresh and/or unique take on the role. Many of us here at CBM tend to follow comic canon just a little bit more than Joe Q Public. So, what say you: Should he be given a chance? Are you open to any kind of unique take on one of the most popular characters, superhero or otherwise, ever? Is this all just a publicity stunt?

I think a screen test is reasonable. I like him Community and can see him more so playing the sarcastic, less loserfied Spider-man I know from the comics. I mean, Spider-man wasnt exactly a loser. Have you seen the women he got?

@LEEE777 - Really?? Jake Gyllenhaal ?? LOL, He's too old. We need someone that is barely 18-19.

who gives a [frick] what race he is, if he does a good job then be happy... would you be pissed if a white guy played spawn? which would be different because in spawn his race is discussed unlike spiderman where it's not the story line would not be affected one bit, just a few racist assholes wouldn't see it. this is nick fury all over again.
JackJNapier
JackJNapier - 5/31/2010, 2:04 AM
But nick fury is black in the ultimate universe, so there is atlease publication of him being black, unlike Peter Parker whom is [frick]ing white all the way. six thwellsteve is retarted for calling people racist that think this is dumb. Would you make Anne Frank an asian?? or how about Malcolm X as a white guy?
majinlogan
majinlogan - 5/31/2010, 2:20 AM
dont u ever mention a white guy playing spawn again my friend. whats in the comics is the law. if there was a mainstream marvel comic book with a black spiderman it wud be a different thing. ultimate nick fury was black (and made with sam jackson's likeness) before he was cast in the movies. Its not being racist. Any actor taken should be able to do a good job, thats why they are hired, and spider-man HAS to be white. You cant mess with the law. Like elba doing heimdall wasnt a disappointment enough.

"Would you make Anne Frank an asian?? or how about Malcolm X as a white guy?"

I agree that Peter should be white, but those are bad examples.Other than Peter physically being white, there is nothing about his story that is specific to a white character.Being Jewish and being black is vital to Anne Frank and Malcolm X's story.Plus, they are real people, not fictional characters. It doesn't make any sense to change their race.

Glover would make a hilarious Peter Parker, though he is too old for the reboot.

Wow.It may come as a surprise to you, but not all black people are jive talking. It's the 21st century, nobody talks jive.Though it would have been equally racist, you could have said you didn't want a ghetto Spider-Man.

Got [frick] all with being racist @ STEVE, its called selling out!

The race card is old, these guys want a SPIDER-MAN they've grown up with, not a [frick]ing weak Hollywood version of their own!

How about we have ALICE EVE playing RHINO while we're at it lol! : D

Oh and lets have JET LI play BLADE!!! : P

Its just a big no no, this won't be SPIDER-MAN if this happens lol!

Who the [frick] is he anyway lol? Anyone?

GUN @ Cheers!

bigstu62 - 5/31/2010, 2:39 AM
As an African American man I don't agree with changing established characters to other races. Comic beginnings were created in a racist era that did not want to recognize other races of color...but...now there are plenty of ethnic characters that can be brought to the big screen instead of changing the race or gender of current ones. As for meowth49 not all black people speak jive, grow up and go out into the real world and meet a few black people to learn something. Plus jive was a term used in the 70s that is not even used by blacks today.

I HONESTLY JUST WANNA BE SERVED SPIDERMAN THE WAY WE'VE BEEN GETTING HIM CAUSE HONESTLY I DIDN'T THINK ANYTHING FROM THE ORIGINAL FORMULA NEEDED TO BE CHANGED PERIOD. WHY CHANGE ANYTHING? JUST BECAUSE THE 3RD TRIPPED UP A BIT DOESN'T MEAN,"LETS CHANGE THE WHOLE THING, MAKE IT DIFFRENT AND NEW" THIS REBOOT CRAP IS TOTALLY UNNECESSARY, WTF.

I agree Denn... I would like Jake for Spider-Man. I heard he was supposed to do it anyway when Maguire was hurt. I am sorry but am tired of the whole race or politically correct thing. I am by far not a racist but if we are going this route then let's make Blade Mexican or Shaft white.

Jake Gyllenhaal IS NOT A GOOD CHOICE! We need someone who not only LOOKS young but IS young so he can make several sequels. Tobey looked young in part 1, by part 3 he looked terrible, like a old guy. Tobey was already in his mid twenties when he did Spider-Man. I want someone who is 19 or 20 for the first one.

Everybody calm down! No way will they make that type of change for Spider-Man. Lets get the Luke Cage film going or Black Panther. Hey even a Static Shock movie may hit big. I'm a black man and have been reading comics for a very long time like back when there were almost no heroes that looked like me. Eventually Marvel Comics gave us a few and DC Comics tried to follow suit. Now in this day and age changing a mainstream characters ethnicity I feel would turn everybody off. Not that it would be racsism, when it comes to comicbook heroes true fans are a traditionalist bunch. Either create new black characters or use established ones for the films. Spider-Man a black kid? It would probably be a good What If movie. Right, I'm old enough to remember when the What If series from Marvel actually started. But hey let'em get The Black Panther into theaters that would truly be epic!
StephenStrange
StephenStrange - 5/31/2010, 4:52 AM
I don't care what they do with this movie.

I will never even watch it. Not even on Blu Ray.

BUT I will say this. Despite what most of you probably think, if someone objected to changing the race of the character that doesn't automatically mean that that means they are a racist.

But of course saying that is like saying the sky is purple these days since certain very unfortunate aspects of African American culture have been popularized.

Does it make me racist to not want them to make Peter Parker black? No, I dont think it does. I have no problem with them changing a minor characters race (but even then I can never understand why) but there are some things that you just dont do when it comes to big named characters like this one. Doing this would be as bad as making Black Panther or Luke Cage white! This guy needs to get real.

Oh, and if they ever do a proper reboot that's not set in high school then my vote goes to Bret Harrison! :)

not this again.

i hate the goddamn race card. people are so fast to pull it too. i've said it a hundred times before, and i'll say it again.

I want the characters to resemble what they look like in the comics. I want my Captain America and Spidey white, and I want my Black Panther and Luke Cage black. Anyone that thinks that somehow makes me a racist can go [frick] themselves.
