SPIDER-MAN 4 Writer Reveals The Script Was Finished; Weighs In On SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME Surprises

Spider-Man 4 writer James Vanderbilt has revealed how close the movie's screenplay came to being finished, while also sharing his thoughts on seeing a certain amazing actor in Spider-Man: No Way Home...

Before Sony Pictures decided to reboot the web-spinner's franchise with 2012's The Amazing Spider-Man, the plan was to release Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 4 in 2011. John Malkovich was set to play The Vulture, while Anne Hathaway had been tapped to take on the role of Felicia Hardy.

For a variety of reasons, the movie didn't happen, though director Sam Raimi is believed to have lost interest in the franchise after a troubled Spider-Man 3 production that saw Avi Arad shoehorn in Venom. In interviews, he's also appeared unsure of this fourth chapter's story. We'll never know if we missed out on a blockbuster as amazing as Raimi's first two instalments, but writer James Vanderbilt recently told Screen Rant how far along Spider-Man 4 was before the plug was pulled.

"Yeah so, Spider-Man 4, we had a full script sort of ready to go, and, as is sort of the case when you're a working feature writer, they brought in some other great writers to punch it up. They changed some things, and I think about a year later, they got to a point where - and I don't know why - but they got to a point where they decided that wasn't the road they were going to go down."

During his conversation with the site, Vanderbilt - who penned The Amazing Spider-Man - shared his thoughts on [SPOILER WARNING] Andrew Garfield's return in Spider-Man: No Way Home.

"So weirdly, I'd written Spider-Man for Tobey and for Andrew [Garfield], and I love what Tom [Holland] has done with it and what they've done within the MCU. So it was just so fun to see that. I always said the best thing we ever did was cast Andrew because I just think he's such a phenomenal actor, and so to see him getting the love right now and the accolades is just really special."

Garfield is receiving a lot of love for his return as Peter Parker, with fans loudly campaigning on social media for Sony to #MakeTASM3. It seems unlikely Spider-Man 4 or The Amazing Spider-Man 3 will ever actually happen, but there's a chance we'll see more of Garfield and Tobey Maguire.

I really wonder why Spider-Man 4 wasn't gonna have The Lizard be the villain. They were setting him up for three movie with Dr Connors, the relationship bewteen him and Peter was already established... Just to get the Vulture?

@KWilly - I agree and I was surprised Tobey's Parker didn't comment on the fact that Garfield's Dr Connors had turned bad.

@KWilly - they weren't.
They sorta dismissed the possibility in Spider-Man 3:
"I'm a physicist, not a biologist."

@Nemesis17then - yeah, that was odd

@Nemesis17then - If Rhys Ifans was able to be on set then they could have explored that a bit. Had to work with what they had

@KeyzerSoze - It could have been a little name drop from Garfield's Spider-man and they that would have started the conversation

@KWilly - Kraven and The Lizard were the perfect villains for Spider-Man 4.

@KWilly - I had a theory that maybe the Lizard was supposed to be in SM3 but got swapped out instead for Venom.

@KWilly - Sam wanted the Bruce Campbell as Dr Connors, when the studio refused, he pretty much gave up on the character.

@KWilly - I'm of the school that he was setting up Bruce Campbell as either Chameleon or Mysterio.

Maybe an animated movie with this script. Voiced by the original actors. That's never gonna happen though

As much as I wanted to see this movie after No Way Home I understood that Tobey just doesn't have any fun playing Spider-man anymore. I felt like he was there just for the money

@Nemesis17then - yeah, it seemed phoned in.

@Nemesis17then - Bully Maguire mode. Just sick of the damn paparazzi.

@KeyzerSoze - At times he acted like Bully Maguire like super self confident and sarcastic. I expected him to be more humble and more emotional especially when he talked about Harry.

@Nemesis17then - I liked it. I thought he brought a lot to his elder Peter Parker who has just about seen it all. A little road worn and the wiser for it.

Could see it reworked into comic. Especially if we ever get some continuation of Tobey's Spider-Man, although I doubt that.

Always found fascinating (in a bad way) how Amy Pascal kept wasting millions of dollars for years in a movie she never intended to make, works on the reboot started in 2008, after they realiced Spiderman 3 barely broke even when considering how expensive it was.
She wasted Sam's and everyone involved in SM4 time doing something it was going to be cancelled so they could make a cheaper reboot with a cheaper director and cheaper actors.
I would love to ask her what was the point of spending TWO YEARS working on Spiderman 4 when she already decided they were going to reboot...
