Spider-Man: Brand New Day: Rosario Dawson Confirms Claire Temple Return Was Cut From The Movie

Following rumours that Daredevil star Rosario Dawson was set to make her MCU return as Claire Temple in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the actress has now confirmed her scene was shot and cut.

San Diego Comic-Con is in full swing this weekend, but so is GalaxyCon in Raleigh, North Carolina. Rosario Dawson is among those at the event, and during a Q&A with fans, the actress confirmed that she shot a scene as Claire Temple for Spider-Man: Brand New Day

This confirms rumours that first started circulating last year, but Dawson would go on to tell attendees that she's been cut from the movie. Her comments are sure to come as a disappointment to those hoping to see further connective tissue between the MCU and Netflix's Defenders TV shows.

Why was Dawson cut? We don't have an answer to that question just yet, but it could be that the scene was deemed superfluous or Marvel Studios decided to do something else with the character on streaming.

It's possible the studio also didn't want to get fans too excited for a team-up with Daredevil that, unfortunately, may never happen. For better or worse, there's once again a clear line between big and small screen MCU projects (despite some shared characters), and the Man Without Fear looks set to remain on Disney+ for the foreseeable future.

Of course, we also have to throw out the possibility that Dawson was joking or trolling, though it's odd that she mentioned the cameo at all if she is still in Spider-Man: Brand New Day

Claire debuted in Daredevil Season 1 and tended to the Man Without Fear after he was wounded in battle. She soon became the connective tissue between the Netflix shows, racking up appearances in Jessica JonesLuke Cage, and Iron Fist.

In the wake of Defenders, Claire moved in with Luke; however, their romantic relationship ended when Power Man started heading down a dark route as Harlem's vigilante and eventual crime boss. She hasn't been seen since, but was referenced in Daredevil: Born Again Season 2.

What was her scene? Well, the most popular theory was that The Punisher would take a wounded Spider-Man to Claire, especially now that the wall-crawler is a street-level superhero. The prospect of the Ahsoka star's return to the MCU excited fans, though many were frustrated that Charlie Cox's Daredevil will seemingly be absent from Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

Some new Spider-Man: Brand New Day promos have also been released today, both of which you can check out in the players below.

In Spider-Man: Brand New Day, it's a Brand New Day for Peter Parker. Fighting crime full-time as Spider-Man in a world that doesn’t remember him—and the pressure of seeing his old friends move on without him—sparks a change in Peter he may not have the power to control.

But that transformation might also be the only thing that can stop a shocking new threat to the city and those he loves - a powerful villain no one can even see. The world may have forgotten Peter Parker, but he hasn’t forgotten them.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day's cast includes Tom Holland, Zendaya, Sadie, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, Tramell Tillman, Michael Mando, and Mark Ruffalo.

The movie is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and written by Chris McKenna & Erik Sommers. The film is produced by Kevin Feige, Amy Pascal, Avi Arad and Rachel O'Connor. Executive producers include Louis D'Esposito and David Cain.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day swings into theaters on July 31.

That's because she's coming back for a Disney plus series... if I had to guess

If true, then she's officially in the MCU? Hope so.

It would be great to see her in this movie, but I would be even more excited for her to be in Daredevil Born Again. She’s a great character and I like Rosario Dawson as an actress. I mean, she’s also very easy on the eyes too.

@Vigor - It's been reported on multiple occasions that, while some characters will cross over, there's a clear line between the movies and TV shows again.

This is genuinely embarrassing analysis.

You are taking the removal of a single Claire Temple scene and using it to construct an entire theory about Marvel supposedly drawing a “clear line” between its film and streaming characters, while completely ignoring the fact that *Spider-Man: Brand New Day* literally features the Punisher, a character who originated in the Netflix shows and has since appeared in multiple Disney+ projects. He is also, needless to say, a significantly more prominent character than Claire Temple.

So the movie you are using as evidence that “streaming characters will never cross over into film” literally contains a streaming-originated character. Not only that, but one who has just received his own Disney+ special presentation.

And if this is based on Brad Winderbaum's comments about the shows no longer being “mandatory viewing”, then you've completely misunderstood what was actually said. “You don't have to watch the shows to understand the movies” is not the same thing as “characters from the shows will never appear in the movies.” The former is a storytelling strategy. The latter is a completely different claim, and one that the Punisher's presence in this very film immediately disproves.

At that point, this isn't analysis. It's taking one piece of information, inventing a theory around it, and then ignoring the most obvious piece of evidence that directly contradicts the theory. If Marvel wanted to establish a hard divide between its streaming characters and its films, Jon Bernthal's Punisher wouldn't be in the movie you're discussing.

Claire Temple's scene may have been cut for any number of reasons. Maybe the scene didn't work. Maybe it was redundant. Maybe the story changed. Maybe Marvel simply decided not to use the character. But claiming that its removal somehow proves Daredevil is being deliberately kept out of the films, while the Punisher is literally appearing in this very movie, is an extraordinary leap in logic.

The “clear line between big and small screen MCU projects” exists entirely in your speculation. The actual evidence on screen says the exact opposite. This is a particularly bad example of a journalist presenting an assumption as analysis, especially when the film itself directly disproves the premise.

Oh man , that sucks but perhaps it was cut due to pacing or ultimately feeling superfluous when seen in the film so oh well…

I hope we do see Rosario as Claire in Born Again atleast since I like the character and felt she brought a nice grounding element as the moral center of the Netflix shows imo.

If Daredevil truly is not in this, then it's going to suck a lot. You can't have the Hand going around this obviously and not have Daredevil intervene, regardless of where he is, he knows they are a fundamental threat to the entire city.

Claire Temple as connecting tissue was neat in the Netflix Era, but I think it'd be disappointing to see her and then not have it result in him actually teaming up with Daredevil and other Defenders beyond Punisher.
