Spider-Man: Brand New Day Writer Reveals Original Plans For Kraven The Hunter, Shadow King, And Boomerang

Spider-Man: Brand New Day writer Chris McKenna has revealed original plans for villains like Kraven the Hunter, Boomerang, Overkill, and Shadow King before Jean Grey was chosen as the movie's antagonist.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day saw the web-slinger battle Jean Grey, The Hulk, and Scorpion, but Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures considered several other antagonists before choosing them.

We know Chameleon was a possibility before Sony decided to move forward with its ill-fated Kraven the Hunter movie. Now, in an interview with The Bulwark, co-writer Chris McKenna detailed some amazing-sounding plans for Kraven in the fourth MCU Spider-Man movie.

That version of Brand New Day had Kraven turn New York City "into a Home Alone trap for Spider-Man, where he set up booby traps everywhere."

McKenna explained, "He's hunting down Peter Parker, and he could even be a tertiary villain. He could be hired by someone and... someone who's stalking him the entire movie."

While Kraven didn't make the cut, Boomerang did show up in a single scene. Some fans were disappointed by Fred Myers' minor role given that he was a pretty significant supporting character in Nick Spencer's Amazing Spider-Man run. There were once bigger plans for him, though.

"[Peter] goes back to his apartment. He had missed his rent and gets thrown out. He has to move in with two guys down the hallway who are like these two nice guys who he's met before," McKenna recalled. "One of them is Australian, and then it turns out that they're villains. One of them's Overkill, and the other one is Boomerang. He finds himself a roommate of two villains."

When the decision was made to use a villain with psychic powers, Jean Grey wasn't initially a possibility. Shadow King, however, was, despite having no real history with Spider-Man on the page.

"We started thinking, 'What if it was Shadow King from the comics, who's a really, really cool villain, who is a telepath that first gets discovered by Charles Xavier, and he runs into him in Egypt. You didn't even see this character because all our Shadow King is trying to do is find his body. And that was the story. He was trying to find his body. His body basically had been taken from him and hidden somewhere in New York City a long time ago by people who recognised that this guy was really dangerous."

"Everyone started realising, 'Well, this isn't very satisfying because just having a disembodied voice the entire time and not having a face-to-face villain, you hit a wall at a certain point and you can't explore who the character is.' So much of Spider-Man's stories are so great because of his connection with the villain and his telling."

Ultimately, all of these ideas were obviously left on the cutting-room floor, but McKenna's comments offer an intriguing look at just how different Spider-Man: Brand New Day could have been.

A Kraven story would have been amazing, but the odds of seeing that villain battle Spider-Man in the near future are surely very slim given that 2024's Kraven the Hunter was a critical and commercial flop. Still, who knows what surprises Spider-Man 5 will bring.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is now playing in theaters.

They wasted a bunch of iconic Spider-Man movies in other trash. Guess who came up with the idea.... the living embodiment of cancer himself, Avi Arad.

@bobevanz - And who cheers Avi on at every turn? The moron himself, Tom Rothman.

I would much rather have had the Chameleon and Kraven than what we got. Honestly the decision making is terrible, both Sony and Disney.

@BackwardGalaxy - there were some great moments it but as a full movie just like Deadpool and Wolverine it wasn’t very well written, and didn’t really go anywhere other than to be a vehicle to introduce Jean Grey.

@Spike101 - I agree. The movie was very disappointing. Jean Grey basically doing what Shadow King does the whole movie AND walking a guy in front of a speeding vehicle AND mind [frick]ing Peter with the MJ stuff AND being too stupid to tell the celebrated hero that she was looking for her kidnapped sister AND the Punisher not being a fugitive AND the Hulk shoehorned in all made this movie boring and predictable. But Fanboys will eat up anything, no matter how bad the writing. Apparently, if You shoot someone with a Sniper Rifle by mistake, you can pick them up and take them to the Hospital and keep watch over them, no questions asked lol...

nobody is jumping in an imaginary bandwagon my friend

this movie 'connected' with a lot people, fans & general audiences alike, hence the amazing legs this movie has at the box office Globally !

some poeple didn't like the movie and that's ok, you don't have to "like" a movie just because everybody else is liking it, for the most part, A LOT of people liked the movie and seen it more than once.

don't be sour about it...

I think the dislike for Brand New Day is going to grow over time when the missed opportunities begin piling up. Especially if they permanently kill off Tobey or Andrew in Secret Wars, let alone if it means they'll never adapt the Venom storyline because they already did him losing control in this one.

@Scarilian - They also just skipped his college years in the movie, something people have been wanting for a long long time. And they didn't really adapt any of the high school stuff from comics either. Just took some names from wikipedia.

@Scarilian - as you say such missed opportunities. Just a little effort could have resulted in something so much better. If only there were hundreds of comics to have taken inspiration from….

The MSheU couldnt contain itself, all the OP Xmen girls need to be utilized. Black Cat is too sexy and feminists think its evil for men to sexualize women so she wasnt an option

@Matchesz - do people really type out "MSheU" and not see how stupid it makes them look?
OK. We understand you are afraid of women and will never touch one, no need to make it so obvious

@DarkeyeZ - if this film had Sydney Sweeney as Black Cat the people saying i’m afraid of woman would have big problem's with this movie

@newhire13 - I feel like these are better then the ones we got in the previous article atleast.

Also , he has more creative say now starting with this installment so whose to say some of these weren’t Tom’s ideas?

TheVisionary25 - 9/20/2026, 3:19 PM
Man , that Kraven idea sounds fun and hopefully they are able to atleast utilize it or the character in the next installment since they couldn’t use him for NWH given the solo movie was in development and they likely passed on him for this because that very solo movie didn’t do well so they wanted distance from that iteration.

Anyway, I like the idea of Boomerang atleast being one of his roommates since it very much reminds me of the fairly recent Nick Spencer run where that was the case and was one of the better parts of that imo…

No idea who Overkill is though unless they were reimagining 2 characters with that name in the comics , one being a mutant and one being Taserface who gave himself a new name after getting discarded Iron Man Armor so if that’s the case then I’m going with the former then the latter.

Oh and the Shadow King could have been a fun villain for Spidey since I enjoy when other heroes face off again someone who isn’t their usual villain like we have gotten in comics such as Daredevil vs Mysterio or The Spot etc.

Ultimately I think it was a good move to not go forward with The Shadow King since it just wouldn’t have been particularly exciting for him to be a disembodied voice for atleast a majority of the film so them wanting to still use a psychic antagonist for Spidey given it will be a new type of threat for him to face hence deciding on Jean which then allowed them to still tell an emotional story with the character too and tie it with Peter’s arc was well done and the right call!!.

Well that's a bummer.

I enjoyed Brand New Day but I really wasn't feeling who they picked as the main antagonist.

Do hope we still get Kraven and Venom in Spider-Man 5, although I guess it would kind of a repetition of Spider-Man 2 (the game). They could even use Johnson and Hardy for.
