5 Problems I Had With THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2

Despite enjoying the movie I had a few issues with it and here are the top ones.

No one please complain about lack of pictures as I don’t know how to enter them.

Okay I saw the Amazing Spider-Man 2 the first Saturday when it was released early here in the UK and I really enjoyed it. I think this and the last Marc Webb film really did bring my favourite superhero to life (though some people are calling this new sequel the Batman and Robin of the franchise, seriously?), I liked the old trilogy but Tobey Maguire never really clicked with me totally as I think that while he was a good Peter Parker he was not as wise-cracking as a Spider-Man than I preferred. However as much as I like these movies and Andrew Garfield’s awesome performance as the Web-Head I do acknowledge this new instalment has flaws and here are five that stuck with me.

SPOILERS FOR THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 AHEAD!!!!

Honourable Mention:
Where is Uncle Ben’s murderer?
You know the cash register thief that killed Uncle Ben in the last movie and was not caught? Weren’t you interested in seeing where this went? So did I and they did not even mention the guy in the movie? What’s the deal? Okay I know the real answer to this; they are using it as a major subplot in the upcoming tie in video game (which I am looking forward to) but still not even a mention? Still I think that is not an entirely justifiable reason since the game isn’t canon! For example: in the last game Alistair Smythe was the main bad guy and he appears in the movie looking completely different, Felicia is in the movie as Harry’s assistant when he takes over Oscorp but in the game she is a cat burglar working for the Kingpin.

Here is how I think they could have done: when Spidey catches up to the guy again he reveals himself and tells him that he killed his uncle, the killer actually starts laughing after thinking about it for a second. He came to the conclusion that since he was responsible for Spider-Man going after criminals and becoming a hero then his actions indirectly saved the city from the Lizard’s Plan and he starts raving to himself ‘I saved the city....I saved the city...’ when he is being brought to his cell.

They had better make up for this omission with giving a decent end to this subplot in the game!

5. Missy Kallenback not being in this movie

Okay this one won’t really disappoint a lot of viewers the way it did me. Before the last movie was released one of the first things I read about was that a minor character invented for the film would be appearing called Missy Kallenback would be featured, a nerdy girl that had a crush on Peter and I got intrigued. When I saw her in the actual movie, getting picked on by Flash after he spilt paint on the banner and then looking in awe as Peter sticks up for her. I liked the scene and I thought Missy herself had potential. Unfortunately there was little fanfiction of her and in this sequel she is nowhere to be seen (also kind of bummed that Flash did not appear either).

So to me she is like the role that Ursula (the landlord’s daughter) played in the Raimi trilogy, a possible love rival with potential that sadly got squandered. I still have my fingers crushed that Missy will appear again, maybe bring her back instead of bringing in MJ whose role was cut from this movie. Maybe she can be a new love interest when the Amazing Spider-Man comic comes back after the year we had to deal with Doc Ock’s Superior Spider-Man.

4. Not as Much Spidey Fight

Okay unfortunately there as not as many Spider-Man action scenes in the middle portion of this movie (the bulk of any superhero movie besides the climax) that I would like to be. Granted I liked the stories they were telling in that climax like building up Peter and Gwen’s relationship, Harry’s struggle as he has the same disorder that earlier in the movie killed his father, Max Dillon’s unfortunate descent into villainy but still could you at least throw some excuse for Spidey to throw some punches in costume?

3. Jameson not physically appearing in the movie.

I was disappointed to find out no one was casted as Jameson (my favourite member of Spidey’s supporting cast) and I came to the conclusion that he would not be in the sequel and I was wrong.........partially. Peter mentions working for Jameson taking pictures but he doesn’t actually appear! The closest he we get is an admitingly funny scene where Peter emails his pictures to him and asks him to consider that Spidey is a hero and seconds later Jameson’s reply is titled “WRONG!” What....a........TEASE!!!!

Hopefully Jameson will appear for real in the next film.

2. The Gentleman?

You know the guy who meets Curt Connors in the mid credits scene in the last film? The one who people have been debating who is? Well we find out!

He appears again near the ending talking with Harry about putting a team together. In the credits we see that the guy is actually..............the Gentleman Gustav Fliers...........a villain from the trilogy of Sinister Six novels............

WHAT?????

After all that debate of who he is and he turns out to be a villain from a series of lesser known Spidey books? Okay well they were about the Sinister Six and he is helping Harry put the Sinister Six together but still they built up this mystery only to give a pretty stupid answer! It’s like if they built up some super secret mastermind in the Batman films and then it turns out to be Egghead from the Adam West show!!!

Now here is the big one........

1.  The Green Goblin
Now when we first caught glimpses of the Goblin being in the movie I was with the ones who were not pleased with the Goblin’s look. On the poster he looked like the Goblin from the first Sam Raimi movie if he did not have the mask and his face was messed up. I tried to be open minded since it seemed Harry would be the Green Goblin and he turned out to be the one to take up the mantle. I could accept this as since when Dane was casted as Harry I thought the casting was perfect as he had did an incredible performance as a normal kid who goes psycho mainly thanks to his abusive father (kind of like Harry Osborn) in the awesomely breathtaking POV film Chronicle.

Okay in the film proper his face did look a little better and his armour seemed alright. Okay the set up to him being the Green Goblin was great: Harry is dying because of his family’s genetic disorder and he thinks only Spidey’s blood can save him, Spidey refuses to give it to him which causes him to go angry, he sneaks into an Oscorp Lab since he was framed by the board of covering up the accident which created Electro (the lab also housing the Vulture’s Wings, Rhino’s armour and the Doc Ock arms) and gets the venom of the dead spiders Peter’s dad Richards used when he was working there. Unfortunately as a scene in the film earlier established when he found out Norman Osborn was planning on selling the research to a military faction Richard made it so the research could never work without him so Harry gets mutated as a result.

He uses armour that Oscorp had been working on and becomes the Goblin.............and right when he starts speaking as the Goblin that was when I lost all hope of taking him seriously as the Green Goblin. I am sorry but as much ha good job Dane did as Harry Osborn, both the design and the stupid over the top voice made it so that I could not taking him seriously as the Green Goblin.

That is my main problems with the movie and despite all that I still really enjoyed the film and I don’t really understand how people could think this would be the Batman and Robin of the series.
