The Amazing Spider-Man 2: Shailene Woodley Reveals Why Mary Jane Was Cut From The Sequel And Scrapped Plans

Paradise star Shailene Woodley was supposed to play Mary Jane Watson in 2014's The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and shot scenes as the character. Now, she's revealed scrapped plans for MJ and why she was cut.

Divergent star Shailene Woodley was cast as Mary Jane Watson in 2014's The Amazing Spider-Man 2, but her scenes were ultimately left on the cutting room floor.

Later, we learned that she'd been removed from the already jam-packed sequel because of time constraints. However, there was also speculation that Sony paid perhaps a little too much attention to the immature, often gross, discourse surrounding MJ's appearance (Woodley was spotted on set alongside Andrew Garfield in photos that drew a mixed response).

In a new interview, the actress reflected on her brief stint in the Marvel Universe. After revealing why she was cut, Woodley confirmed the plan had been for her to reprise the role in The Amazing Spider-Man 3.

"We shot it. That was a fun phone call," she recalled. "I was cast as Mary Jane for 'Spider-Man,' which was my dream because I really—oh my God, Spider-Man's my favourite superhero. Mary Jane was my favourite character growing up. So, when I got it, I was like, 'This is so exciting.'"

"We filmed like three scenes together, me and Andrew Garfield," Woodley continued. "And then, like a year later, they were like, 'So, you're not in the movie anymore.' And I was like, 'What? What do you mean?'"

"They were like, 'We’ve introduced a lot of new characters in this last one, and we're going to wait for Emma Stone's—like, whatever happens between her and Andrew,'" she added. "They were like, 'Let’s wait for her to die, and then we’ll introduce Mary Jane,' which made sense. But then they didn’t make that film."

Sony Pictures planned to follow The Amazing Spider-Man 2 with Sinister Six, The Amazing Spider-Man 3, and The Amazing Spider-Man 4. All those plans went out the window when the second movie wasn't the $1 billion hit the studio expected.

The Sony Hack email had made fans aware of talks with Marvel Studios about bringing Spidey into the MCU. It became clear that was what people wanted, and Tom Holland ultimately took over the role from Andrew Garfield, making his official MCU debut in 2016's Captain America: Civil War

Elaborating on why her scenes didn't make it into The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Woodley said, "They thought it would be weird to introduce a new love interest. Well, that's what I was told, you know, but again, who knows what the truth is? I could have been terrible, and they’re like, 'We can’t do this.'"

Teasing a possible romance between Peter and MJ while he was pining after Gwen Stacy—and right before her death—would have been an odd decision, but Sony threw everything at the wall for the sequel and not everything stuck. A subplot about Norman Osborn's preserved, decapitated head was scrapped, as was a cameo from the Venom Symbiote and Richard Parker's return.

The Amazing Spider-Man 3 was rumoured to feature a special formula that raised the dead, meaning both Captain Stacy and Gwen were set to appear in some capacity. Sony executives even considered turning the latter into Carnage.

It definitely would have felt cheap to set her up before Gwen died. Undercuts the weight of the loss for Peter.

They should have cut Electro too and made it more focused on Harry. And kept the scene with Peter's dad.

Yeah I remember the whole hoo-ha when those pics leaked. The memes were bad and I felt bad for her. Those were classic pre-Homecoming times... the good times.

@TheAmericanHero Yeah this site has surely lost a lot of steam but even in general comic movies aren't as hot today either to the general public. Sucks but thank overproduced bad quality for it.

I liked the first movie, and although it had issues, it also had great potential as a franchise; I really hope we can eventually get that third movie to close the trilogy.

Lucasberg - 8/25/2026, 1:58 PM
@TheJok3r - Why the frick Sony did not instantly greenlight that third movie following No Way Home is beyind figuring out dude. Its crazy. Just finish that trilogy at least good grief.

@Lucasberg - There's been rumors about an Amazing Spider-Man 3 and a Raimi Spider-Man 4 for years now, so there's clearly interest behind the scenes, but nothing has materialized for some reason.
Lucasberg
Lucasberg - 8/25/2026, 2:59 PM
@TheJok3r - Yes and both would make sense. Garfield's moreso because it really didn't even get to come round full circle whereas Raimi's actually did. But where both franchises finished off was pretty freakin crappy and warrant at least a follow-up to try to finish things off well.
TheJok3r
TheJok3r - 8/25/2026, 3:33 PM
@Lucasberg - I'm in the minority of people who like Spider-Man 3, and considering it wrapped up all the plot points in that series, I don't really need another movie there. The Amazing Spider-Man is another story; there's plenty to resolve there, both from its previous two movies and what that universe's Peter said about himself during No Way Home.
Lucasberg
Lucasberg - 8/25/2026, 4:32 PM
@TheJok3r - Oh man. I remember taking my wife of just 3 months to the theater to see Spidey 3 way back in 2007 so excited and left so let down by that movie lol. The movie has its moments but oddly enough, what's wrong with it in my opinion is it's actually got too much Raimi stuff running over in it. It's like Raimi gone wild. Raimi is great for certain types of sequences and certain kinds of character arcs but he needs restraints for a movie like Spider-man to stay in his lane - I know the suits forced Venom on him but all the problems with that movie start to finish have his DNA all over them...anyways, if I had to pick one Spidey to have a sequel for its definitely Garfield's - for all the reasons you mentioned.

@IcePyke - yeah zendaya’s MJ doesn’t look or act anything like Maryjane Watson, which is I guess why they couldn’t even call her Maryjane. She’s basically a totally original character to the movies.

The set photos of Woodley didn’t look great, but she did fit the basic look of MaryJane.

Ha1frican
Ha1frican - 8/25/2026, 1:35 PM
@TheVisionary25 - I get that but everyone knows that MJ is another love interest so setting up who would eventually be his endgame relationship on the same movie they kill his established love interest in just wouldn’t work on any level. You could mention her, maybe via Aunt May as someone who’s around but that’s about it

I can understand it being dissapointing for her but I’m glad they realized that putting Mary Jane in TASM 2 when that movie was already overstuffed was not the best decision hence them cutting her from the film (though I still would have liked to have seen Shailene’s deleted scenes with Andrew to see their chemistry etc).

From what I remember of the set photos , it looks like she was going to be his new neighbor who had just moved in which might have been fun…

Anyway , TASM 2 was such a mixed bag for me and I wasn’t liking the direction that take seem to be going in so I’m glad it was ultimately scrapped overall and we got the MCU version who I have liked so far (for the most part)!!.

Oh, this reminds me of the obvious satire @MarkCassidy wrote that went over most people's heads.

That was a memorable piece, even if the complete lack of reading comprehension caused some genuine chaos and collateral damage when people took it too literally.

I remember 10-15 years ago there was this big Shailene Woodley push that I just really didn't grasp:

-3 Divergent movies
-Fault in our Stars
-Amazing Spider-man Mary Jane

Her acting was okay to me. Not poor but nothing that gripped me ever and just overall she had really vanilla vibes in appearance and presentation. I never hated her, but do not miss the strange sudden flood of Woodley everywhere.

Now there's been a nice pushback against that faux moral authority crew that took control here for a bit.

If he was setting up another girlfriend while toying with Gwen like he did in this movie already, that would completely undercut any sympathy towards him.
