My Predictions for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (Based on the Advertising)

My Predictions for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (Based on the Advertising)

The marketing campaign for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has been aggressive to say the least. Here, I gather information from different promotional material (trailers, clips, and statements from the filmmakers) and connect the dots.

I would like to start by saying that I have not watched The Amazing Spider-Man 2, I am merely connecting the dots based on what is common knowledge to those who are familiar with the material (trailers, clips, et cetera) that Sony has released to the public.

We know that the movie will start by showing a clock during a flashback scene involving Peter’s parents in a plane.  Peter’s parents will try to expose Oscorp for its malicious intentions and die in the process.

Next, we will see Spider-Man swinging through the streets of New York City as he listens to the radio incorporated into his new suit.  He will hear about a robbery involving an escaping truck and go stop it. During the car chase, he will have a quick phone conversation with Gwen about why he is late for their graduation.  As a result of the reckless driving from the car chase, we will be introduced to Max Dillon when he is saved by Spider-Man. Max will be very surprised and honored to have been saved by Spider-Man, who will become an obsession for Max.

Back to the car chase, we are introduced to Aleksei Sytsevich who is stopped by Spider-Man. At some point during this scene, Captain Stacy will appear as a vision. As the scene comes to an end, Aleksei will be left with his underwear exposed as Peter leaves to go to his graduation.  Peter will make a very conspicuous entrance and kiss Gwen.

Stan Lee will have a cameo appearance during the graduation scene as one of the audience members.
As we learn more about Max, we find that he is a very introverted electrical engineer at Oscorp who is treated very unkindly by his mother and his superior, one of whom is Alistair Smythe.

Furthermore, Max is the true genius behind Oscorp’s new energy plant.  While working at Oscorp, Max falls into a tank with electric eels.  This accident will turn him into Electro.

Laden with confusion and fear, Max will wander into Times Square.  After not having talked for a while, Peter and Gwen are meeting at Times Square, where Gwen plans to tell Peter that she has the opportunity to study at Oxford in England. Their meeting is short-lived as Peter leaves to deal with the ruckus that Electro has created.  Spider-Man will try to alleviate Electro’s tension, but as we all know, this will result in Electro feeling betrayed and a battle between the two will ensue.

Spider-Man will eventually defeat Electro using a fire hose. Considering Emma Stone’s comments about Gwen being the brains of the relationship, I would not be surprised if the fire hose Gwen’s idea.  After the battle, Electro will be sent to Ravencroft.

At some point, we will be introduced to Peter’s childhood friend.  Harry is now playboy who has returned to New York to see his dying father. The relationship between Harry and Peter will be very “buddy-buddy” from the looks of it.

Aleksei will briefly return (this time as Rhino) for another battle with Spider-Man.

During the battle, a little kid in a Spider-Man costume will be present.  This should be reminiscent of the scene from Iron Man 2 when Iron Man saves the kid wearing an Iron Man mask.  This little kid will make another appearance at a later time when Spider-Man saves him from a pack of bullies.  After the defeating Rhino, Peter will have a difficult time removing the Spider-Man costume in his room.  Aunt May will enter the room and cue the chimney “joke.”
Throughout the movie, Aunt May will working as (or training to become) a nurse.  Eventually, Peter and Aunt May will have a talk about secrets, and Peter will discover a recording from his father in which he reveals secrets about Oscorp.
As for Peter’s relationship with Gwen, Gwen will choose to stay with him; however, their relationship will not last long as Harry discovers that he, like his father, suffers from this unknown disease and the cure for it is in Spider-Man’s blood.  Harry will go to Ravencroft and release Electro so that they can kill Spider-Man.  Felicity Jones’s character will probably not have too much do in this movie other than be closely acquainted with either Norman or Harry.

Harry will take a serum that will be the catalyst for his graphic transformation.  Harry will proceed to use a glider and wear a suit that is not yet completed.  Electro, who is now wearing a suit, will manage to attract Spider-Man.  Jamie Foxx has implied that Electro will not die “because when you think about it, electricity never dies, it just goes to a different place.”  Thus, after defeating Electro, Spider-Man will be surprised by the appearance of the Green Goblin.  Harry will take Gwen and lead them to a clock tower, where the final battle will take place.

As evidenced by the movie’s spot during the Super Bowl, Sony wants the general audience to know that Gwen Stacy might die in this movie.  Harry will drop Gwen, and Spider-Man will jump to catch her.

However, as one of the trailers showed, Spider-Man will drop Gwen and shoot a web to try and save her.

Here, we see that Spider-Man manages to catch her safely.

During a recent appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Emma Stone was asked by Ellen if there is any truth to the rumors that Gwen might die in this movie.  Stone says that she cannot “confirm nor deny” the rumors.  I am not sure if you know this or not, but the topics of conversation for these talk shows are planned beforehand by the hosts and guests.  I am almost certain that it was not Ellen’s idea to mention these rumors.  Sony wanted this issue to be addressed during the show to let the general audience know that Gwen might die in this movie.  At this year’s CinemaCon, Rory Bruer, President of Worldwide Distribution at Sony Pictures Releasing, said that this movie will represent “a turning point for Peter Parker.”  This is a clear allusion to The Amazing Spider-Man #121, the issue in which Gwen Stacy dies.

Via an aggressive marketing campaign, Sony is clearly embracing the fact that Gwen might die in this movie.  This leads me believe that there are two paths, both of which I find problematic, for the fate of Gwen in The Amazing Spider-Man 2:
1.) Gwen will die in this movie.
2.) As Gwen is falling and the audience begins to accept her death, Spider-Man saves her and surprises the audience.  At this point, most audience members will begin to think that Gwen will not die in the movie despite the ominous marketing campaign and ubiquitous rumors; however, just as the audience thinks that Gwen has escaped death, she will be killed in a sudden and unexpected manner (to both the general audience and comic book fans).

I honestly think that the latter is the most likely outcome.  Regardless of what happens to Gwen, Spider-man will defeat Harry; subsequently, Harry will be sent to Ravencroft.

The fact that the marketing campaign for this movie has been so aggressive (the endless release of posters and trailers, the announcement of four more films, et cetera) suggests that Sony is relying heavily on this film.

Nice! I agree with your second point on Gwen's Death. I think that they're making it seem like she will, but then she won't die. I think she'll need to die for MJ to be in #3 so I think she might die unexpectedly afterwards.

It's absolutely ridiculous that you can effectively tell the entire plot og this movie from the amount of footage shown so far. I mean, I'm sure there will be a surprise or two when you see this in the cinema but the fact that everyone knows the entire basic plot before the films me even comes out really annoys me.

Spider-man is my favourite hero and I really hope this film will be amazing but I genuinely think it's gonna have all the same problems as the first film. An amazing cast who play their characters perfectly, great chemistry between the characters and really good dialogue but just a poorly thought out plot and too many ideas crammed into a the film, and a whole lot of plot threads that never get tied up.

I made this theory back in February and i still think its true, it would give a real reason for norman to become goblin and give us the real death for gwen instead of that supposed "leak" that gusto is talking about. Honestly i don't want her to die, but if she does, i want it to be in Spider-man 3 with Norman/Goblin and Venom/Eddie brock as the villains. It will introduce daily bugle more and have a great lead in for the venom movie, so they can spend more time on venom's antagonist, carnage.
