James Gunn Officially On Board To Direct SUICIDE SQUAD Relaunch With "Mostly All-New Cast"

More big DC movie news here, as the trades have confirmed that James Funn will return to the director's chair for WB's The Suicide Squad, which will actually be a relaunch with a (mostly) new cast!

On the heels of the news that Warner Bros. has set a date for The Batman - minus Ben Affleck as Bruce Wayne - THR has confirmed that Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn will helm the studio's Suicide Squad... sequel?

According to the trade's report, the movie will actually be more of a relaunch than a direct follow-up to David Ayer's original, and will feature "mostly an all-new cast of characters and actors."

While Gunn directing isn't too surprising considering he was already on board to write the script, the new cast is unexpected. We assume "mostly" means Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn) and Will Smith (Deadshot) will return as previously reported, but there's no mention of them here.

As we figured, The Suicide Squad will be "very much rooted in Gunn’s vibe, as seen in the Guardians movies."

@Prime8 - We thought the same thing about Josh Whedon.

@superbigguy32 - Nobody could save that movie, a two part movie cut to one part, forced to cut it down to 2 hours including credits. Most of the movie was still Snyder. If they had pulled a Solo, and reshot most of it, maybe Joss could have saved it

@dracula - I never directed a movie in my life, and I feel I could’ve done better. They could’ve had Martian Manhunter in the movie. And he could’ve been watching over Clark since he was baby like in the comic book. He helped him on The Kent farm and he was a couple of his teachers at school. It could’ve been like ‘Reign of the Supermen’ explaining how Clark Kent came back. The also could’ve teased the other 4 Supermen and brought them in for a Man of Steel sequel. They could’ve kept Cavill with the mustache and beard, because of Mission Impossibe, and gave him the longer hair and facial hair. Explain it with the solar radiation and the codex it made his hair grow. Explain to the WB executives that the movie has to be about 30-40 minutes longer to flesh out the story better.

@superbigguy32 - Well that would basically been a new movie. Really with the characters they had, I was thinking they should have gone the Superman The Animated Series Legacy route, having Darkseid bring superman back and brainwashing him to attack earth

@superbigguy32 - Really. He should have had a beard in the comics when he revived for the same reason he had longer hair, but I didn’t think of that then. I think that happened just because they wanted Superman to look cooler.

@dracula - That’s what they did when WB went from Zack’s movie to Josh...it was a brand new movie, right???

@RolandD - I think that’s what they said as well (to make him look cooler). It was the 90’s and they thought it would appeal to the younger crowd.

@dracula - "Most of the movie was still Snyder."

Not really, it's easily noticeable that tons of things were cut/reshot/changed.

Most of Superman's/Clark's scenes are new or reshot by Whedon, with the awful cgi mouth and terrible green screens instead of real locations.

Same with Affleck/Batman, he looked great in the earlier trailers, like he did on BvS, then in the movie he looks mostly like sh*t, because he went from being in a great shape to be an overweight botox face alcoholic that was depressed and going through a divorce, all of that with his wig looking worse than ever, like Wonder Woman's wig doesn't look good either in the reshot scenes.

And basically all of the stuff reshot by Whedon looks much worse and cheaper, and that's a lot of the final movie we got.

Snyder's visual style, like it or not, is much more spectacular than most directors, while Whedon comes from making tv shows (which I love) and has a very different style, which can look great sometimes with the right budget and time (and the help from Marvel's vfx people), but looks much worse than Snyder's, specially when he doesn't have the time or the budget to spend in reshape such a big movie like this one.

Whedon's visual style and the tone he tends to use is very different to Snyder's, and you can easily see how much he changed because it's very different to what Snyder would have done and looks much much worse and cheaper, because he had no time or budget to do a better job and his main actors were barely available to give their best (Cavill was filming the Mission Impossible movie with the moustache and Affleck was soaked in alcohol and botox).

Warner Bros thought that in a few months with a few millions Whedon could turn a 2 part Snyder Justice League movie in The Avengers 2.0, and it just didn't work, they should have given him more time and money, and wait for Cavill to finish his MI scenes with the moustache, and wait for Affleck to get his sh*t together, and maybe then start from scratch leaving all the Snyder stuff behind (which is what you were suggesting), but that would have meant that they would have wasted probably hundreds of millions (which they actually did anyway), and the movie would have been seen as a disaster, like the whole DC film universe that was trying to compete with the MCU, so they ultimately decided to give Whedon a chance to "fix" what he could and the result was an awful movie, it could have made like 1'5 billions if they had allowed Whedon to do his own stuff with enough time and money (or if they had kept from the very beginning more control over what Snyder was doing), but they didn't. :-(

@KoolerThanJesus - spot on bro. A concise well thought out and described article/post. You should do more on this site bro...or madam.
This bit made me crack up in my office at work:

"Same with Affleck/Batman, he looked great in the earlier trailers, like he did on BvS, then in the movie he looks mostly like sh*t, because he went from being in a great shape to be an overweight botox face alcoholic that was depressed and going through a divorce, all of that with his wig looking worse than ever, like Wonder Woman's wig doesn't look good either in the reshot scenes. "

Thank you sir...

@superbigguy32 - No, YOU thought the same. Many of us were skeptical of that project ever since watching BvS and JL's release date being pushed back. To me is just looks like they slapped Whedon's name on WB's mess. And then placed the blame of its failure on him.

I doubt Gunn would dive into a similar predicament no matter how desperate he might be for another film. Nore would Whedon had if he knew JL's overall outcome.

@Thanoswasright - Why would any director just slap his name on a movie, not knowing how the project will be? That’s like a doctor doing surgery on a patient he knows nothing about. Even though him and Zack are friends, he should’ve still known what direction the movie was going. And not just knowing how things would turn out on good faith.

"Mostly". So maybe a couple of the popular members return? Harley, Deadshot, maybe even Boomerang?

Bautista's been champing at the bit to be in this. Would Bane be too obvious of a choice?
