David S. Goyer On MAN OF STEEL 2, Lex Luthor, Clark's Disguise & More

In yet another interview with the Man Of Steel writer, Goyer discusses the direction the sequel might go in, what incarnation of Lex Luthor we can expect to see, and how they plan on tackling Clark Kent's "ludicrous" civilian disguise. Warning, there are MOS SPOILERS ahead..

We've heard quite a bit from Goyer about how WB's future DC movie slate might shape up now that Man Of Steel has laid the groundwork, but while speaking to Bleeding Cool about the now officially planned sequel to that film, the writer gives a few interesting hints on how Kal-El's story could progress. It seems to be pretty much a given that we will see Lex Luthor in the next movie, and Goyer also touches on that..teasing a very different "Bill Gates-like Lex". And finally he addresses the question of how Clark Kent's basic disguise will work in future movies now that he works at the Daily Planet, and has donned those glasses!

On the challenges of depicting Superman in the modern world in a sequel:

"To me, the interesting challenge is “Could he solve hunger in the horn of Africa? What would he do with the Arab Spring? What would he do in Syria?” Partly you could argue “How could he not intervene in something like the situation in Syria?” but the other argument is “Is it a hornet’s nest if her intervenes? Does he have the wherewithal or the knowledge to intervene in something like this?”

On the version of Lex Luthor we'll likely see:

"There is musing about Lex Luther, conversations that Zack and I have had on set, but it all depends on what happens over the next month. There are obviously those Lexcorp easter eggs in the film and clearly you can see from that, to the extent to which we can intuit things about Lex, it’s not the Gene Hackman version. This is a Bill Gates-like Lex that is probably worth 50, 60, 70 billion dollars. It’s a very different Lex."

On using the old-school disguise:

"We were able to sidestep the issue of the ludicrous glasses disguise in this film but going forwards, we’re going to find ourselves in a sticky wicket. Zack and I have definitely talked about “Okay, hmm, this will be interesting.” Clearly Perry White and Steve Lombard see Lois kissing Superman at the end of the film. Perry’s not an idiot. Moving forward, he’s probably going to say to Lois “What’s up with that?” We’re definitely going to have to go through some story gymnastics."

Agree Goyer sucks. They should do more of an animated series Lex. If you recall Lex said he in a way owned half of Metropolis. After it gets destroyed in MOS, he rebuilts it and doesn't trust Superman

I think they should explore the Zoolander crossover possibility:

I def don't think it's Goyer's fault. Definitely don't. If anything it was Synder's. Don't forget like a year or two ago they were saying that Synder brought his guy in (from Watchmen) to do some rewrites. The same problem I saw in Watchmen I saw in this movie. I did like this movie....but the same issues I had with Sucker Punch and Watchmen...I found in MoS. There is clearly one link between all those movies I'd say and it ain't Goyer.

@LEVITIKUZ As far as Lex...I do see that as being the next step. They can can also explain how kryptonite is found on earth from the terraforming "World Engine" Machine.

There was a LOT of groans in the theater last night when Clark put on that "disguise". Quite lame. I wasn't sure if Lois really didn't recognize him, or was just playing along, since it was so ridiculous.

Lex better have an exo-skeleton suit or a bad-ass alien henchman because I'm not going to settle for some kryptonite BS for a third act

I've heard this from a few people..how the absolute [frick] could anyone that had watched the movie up to that point not realize that Lois new exactly who he was? I mean he;s introduced to her as Clark Kent..the name she had been calling him the whole movie! Did you think she might have thought it was a different Clark Kent?

This is Lex.

No special effects needed (except for the fish, maybe), and the scene could be easily substituted with Lois instead of Question.

Superman needs a mental challenge. He needs to be manipulated.

Alas, my attempt at humor was fruitless.

The disguise is, as it has always been, quite groan-worthy. Do I have a better idea, though? No. Ha!

To be honest, I think Nolan was the problem. As good as the TDK trilogy were, they were barely Batman, and in many ways MoS had the same problem. They really have the potential to give us something closer to the comics in the sequels so now it's time to let Nolan do his own thing and move on from the dark TDK style stuff. We are so close to getting the perfect Superman movie now!

Agreed, she knows Clark Kent is Kal-El because she tracked his family down to the Kent farm. A lot of this anger comes from people who can't properly watch a movie.

Lex is set up perfectly for the sequel, have him be part of Metropolis rebuilding process and build his new tower over Zods crashed ship giving Luthor access to Kryptonian tech leading to Metallo/Bizzaro/Lex's Battlesuit and eventually to contacting Brainiac. Lois and Clark can be investigating this while Luthor damns Superman in public for the damage to the city and loss of life.

Please don't bring Goyer back. I liked MOS but his crappy writing stopped it from being a great film.

I'd bet the folks at the Daily Planet for the most part know who Clark really is. Why else would they give him a job there without a degree or any experience in journalism?

This occurred to me,if Jor-El is one of the smartest men on Krypton, which had a technologically advanced society, then it's very likely that Kal-El has a measure of his intelligence.

Meaning,Superman is way smarter than your average human being & while not nearly the level of Lex Luthor,he's very capable of matching wits with Lex & using his combined brains & brawn to defeat him.

WTF are you people talking about? All of these comments dumping on the film? You all must not have watched the same movie I did because the Man Of Steel I just watched was friggin great! Some of these comments sound like their talking about Superman Returns or something. I guess some people just can't be pleased.

Im a fan of the new Clark/Superman/Lois dynamic in MOS, having her on the inside track right from the beginning so that they can bypass the ridiculousness of her not recognizing him wearing a pair of glasses makes more sense. But I do think we've moved past Reeve's clumsy slapstick Clark, it worked in its time but seems cheesy and forced now and to be honest it would just draw attention to himself rather than just being the quiet, shy repoter in the corner of the office who is polite to everyone.
