James Gunn Addresses Milly Alcock "Fired" As Supergirl And Negative Man Of Tomorrow Buzz Rumors

DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has taken to social media to address a number of DCU-related rumors that have been doing the rounds online this week...

Superman director and DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has taken to Threads to address some of the rumors that have been circulating online over the past few days... while once again noting that he is "mostly done shooting down rumors."

The main rumor Gunn was responding to sprang from a fan noticing that Supergirl star Milly Alcock had deleted several posts relating to the recent DCU movie from her Instagram. This led to speculation that the House of the Dragon star may have been "fired" from her role as the Woman of Tomorrow.

A highly unlikely scenario, of course, even though Supergirl did prove to be a costly flop for the studio.

Gunn also weighed in on reports that Man of Tomorrow recently held a test screening that was met with negative feedback. The filmmaker clarified that the movie has not been screened for anyone, as he was literally just about to show it to fellow DC Studios boss Peter Safran.

Finally, Gunn made it very clear that Matt Reeves has not been "replaced" by Steven Soderbergh as director on The Batman - Part II.

"Oh brother. You guys just have to stop listening to BS, and I'm mostly done shooting down rumors as there are so many and I'm not on here much. But all three of these couldn't be more false. I'm showing PETER SAFRAN my first Director's Cut today - he's the first person to see it obviously - and that's a month early!"

Gunn recently commented on a report that David Ellison paid a visit to the Man of Tomorrow set, confirming that the Skydance boss knows everything that's in the works at DC Studios.

“David knows everything. We told David long ago, and went through what the basic plan was. When he first brought us in and said he wanted to continue on with what we were doing, we told him all that we wanted to do [and talked] about what was happening, the secrets, where was the DCU going, and what was going to happen from Man of Tomorrow on.”

MOT will focus on the Man of Steel (David Corenswet) and Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) putting their differences aside and joining forces to defend the planet against Brainiac (Lars Eidinger).

Rachel Brosnahan (Lois Lane), Skyler Gisondo (Jimmy Olsen), Sara Sampaio (Eve Teschmacher), Isabela Merced (Hawkgirl), and Maria Gabriella de Faria (The Engineer) have all been confirmed to return.

Adria Arjona confirmed that she filmed her scenes when the movie was "wrapping up" during a recent interview, which may support the rumor that her character - be it Wonder Woman or Maxima - will only have a minor role to set up her next DCU appearance.

Man of Tomorrow will hit theaters on July 9, 2027.

Wait, so Gunn's saying that it's not true that Soderbergh's replacing Reeves as the director of the first unit for the rest of principal photography?!

Um, so I guess we should just disregard all the official statements then if this is fake news. He's not very good at this deny deny deny bit. You have to do that when it's still just a rumor, not when it's actually official news dumbass.

@ObserverIO - No. Soderbergh is stepping in & working with Reeves to finish it. A collaboration. I'm not seeing where he's saying Soderbergh isn't finishing up prinicipal photography & Reeves himself said as much.

I assumed this before but unless you really read carefully, Matt himself has said that he has not stepped down. He will be back in the editing room, he just can't finish the rest of principal photography. Soderbergh is the equivalent of a substitute teacher filling in, so he's just shooting whatever storyboards and shot list is ready.

I know not to trust WB, I get that. But I feel like this is different from before.

@TDKRnry88 - He's not working with Reeves, Reeves has stepped down. He might be using his storyboards and shooting schedule but Reeves won't be there. Reeves is busy. And he'll probably be too busy for post-production too.

We heard all this bullshit before with Snyder and Whedon. How are people still buying into this? Reeves can't say anything bad about this legally. Directors aren't even allowed to Alan Smithee anymore in today's Hollywood.

@Irregular - Joss was a subsititute teacher too.

Zack Snyder endorsed him at comic cons. The news was that Zack handpicked Joss. Here's a quote from Chuck Roven at that time that we all bought into then (just like we're buying into the current PR spin today).

“We’re excited about the film, of course – but we were saddened by the events that caused Zack Snyder and Deborah Snyder to have to leave and turn the reins over to Joss Whedon. He was already working with us on some of the scenes for that additional photography that we’re going to be doing shortly. It was fortunate that Zack convinced him, and he agreed to step in and finish the movie – to help Zack finish his vision. We’re excited about that.”

Sound familiar?

@ObserverIO - Reeves has, in fact, not stepped down. The very news report you are relying on says so. Soderbergh will be shooting first unit, just as others are shooting second unit and third unit. Reeves is still the film's director and will be in charge of post-production.

When it comes out with Reeves' name on it, and Reeves publicly thanks Soderbergh, and they possibly even appear together at the premiere, I hope you know what you are going to say to explain away all this stuff you are spewing now.
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 10/17/2026, 12:32 PM
@FreddyH - That's what the report says yes. That is what Gunn says. What Gunn says makes no sense.

Gunn, as you reiterate, says that Soderbergh is not replacing Reeves as director. So then let me ask you a very easy question: What role will Soderbergh have?

(A: Director)

Why don’t you read back to me what both directors said? Soderbergh is basically substituting for Reeves on set due to .a family health issue. Soderbergh offered to direct the remaining footage

@cincymovieguy - FireGunn doesn't need to explain what I said. I already explained what I said, you're just lacking reading comprehension that's all.

A good example here is your reply to my comment about FreddyH. You're actually backing up my point.
I was saying that Soderbergh is replacing Reeves as director. You said the same thing.
I'll read back to you what you said:
"Soderbergh offered to direct the remaining footage"

Thank you. You obviously agree with me. So when Gunn (and FreddyH) says he's not replacing Reeves as director they are wrong at best and lying at worst.

cincymovieguy - 10/18/2026, 10:32 AM
@ObserverIO

Learn how to read. Soderbergh is finishing principal photography so they can stay on schedule, Reeves will take back over post production unlike what happened.

Reeves isn’t being replaced.
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 10/18/2026, 11:41 AM
@cincymovieguy - Soderbergh is the replacement director for the rest of principal photography. Close to half of the movie will be directed by Soderbergh. Whether or not Reeves oversees post-production remains to be seen.
cincymovieguy
cincymovieguy - 10/18/2026, 4:13 PM
@ObserverIO

A third of the movie is going to be shot by Soderbergh. That’s not close to half the movie, lol. Soderbergh is going to be shooting Reeves storyboards and Reeves is going to take over in post.

This is not a Zack Snyder situation where he is being forced out and replaced. He’s basically subbing for Matt while he tends to what sounds like a medical emergency for someone in his family

This has been reported on extensively and isn’t hard to grasp.

Well no, Reeves hasn’t been “replaced”, but he’s been given an assistant in a highly regarded film maker. It’s so unfortunate Reeves has this family issue to contend with, but it sounds like he’s still staying as hands on with the film as he can. I guess he’ll be watching dailies, giving notes, and then picking things up in post. A far different situation to what happened with Snyder and JL.
