James Gunn Addresses Milly Alcock "Fired" As Supergirl And Negative Man Of Tomorrow Buzz Rumors

Superman director and DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has taken to Threads to address some of the rumors that have been circulating online over the past few days... while once again noting that he is "mostly done shooting down rumors."

The main rumor Gunn was responding to sprang from a fan noticing that Supergirl star Milly Alcock had deleted several posts relating to the recent DCU movie from her Instagram. This led to speculation that the House of the Dragon star may have been "fired" from her role as the Woman of Tomorrow.

A highly unlikely scenario, of course, even though Supergirl did prove to be a costly flop for the studio.

Gunn also weighed in on reports that Man of Tomorrow recently held a test screening that was met with negative feedback. The filmmaker clarified that the movie has not been screened for anyone, as he was literally just about to show it to fellow DC Studios boss Peter Safran.

Finally, Gunn made it very clear that Matt Reeves has not been "replaced" by Steven Soderbergh as director on The Batman - Part II.

"Oh brother. You guys just have to stop listening to BS, and I'm mostly done shooting down rumors as there are so many and I'm not on here much. But all three of these couldn't be more false. I'm showing PETER SAFRAN my first Director's Cut today - he's the first person to see it obviously - and that's a month early!"

Gunn recently commented on a report that David Ellison paid a visit to the Man of Tomorrow set, confirming that the Skydance boss knows everything that's in the works at DC Studios.

“David knows everything. We told David long ago, and went through what the basic plan was. When he first brought us in and said he wanted to continue on with what we were doing, we told him all that we wanted to do [and talked] about what was happening, the secrets, where was the DCU going, and what was going to happen from Man of Tomorrow on.”

MOT will focus on the Man of Steel (David Corenswet) and Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) putting their differences aside and joining forces to defend the planet against Brainiac (Lars Eidinger).

Rachel Brosnahan (Lois Lane), Skyler Gisondo (Jimmy Olsen), Sara Sampaio (Eve Teschmacher), Isabela Merced (Hawkgirl), and Maria Gabriella de Faria (The Engineer) have all been confirmed to return.

Adria Arjona confirmed that she filmed her scenes when the movie was "wrapping up" during a recent interview, which may support the rumor that her character - be it Wonder Woman or Maxima - will only have a minor role to set up her next DCU appearance.

Man of Tomorrow will hit theaters on July 9, 2027.

Wait, so Gunn's saying that it's not true that Soderbergh's replacing Reeves as the director of the first unit for the rest of principal photography?!

Um, so I guess we should just disregard all the official statements then if this is fake news. He's not very good at this deny deny deny bit. You have to do that when it's still just a rumor, not when it's actually official news dumbass.

@ObserverIO - No. Soderbergh is stepping in & working with Reeves to finish it. A collaboration. I'm not seeing where he's saying Soderbergh isn't finishing up prinicipal photography & Reeves himself said as much.

I assumed this before but unless you really read carefully, Matt himself has said that he has not stepped down. He will be back in the editing room, he just can't finish the rest of principal photography. Soderbergh is the equivalent of a substitute teacher filling in, so he's just shooting whatever storyboards and shot list is ready.

I know not to trust WB, I get that. But I feel like this is different from before.

@TDKRnry88 - He's not working with Reeves, Reeves has stepped down. He might be using his storyboards and shooting schedule but Reeves won't be there. Reeves is busy. And he'll probably be too busy for post-production too.

We heard all this bullshit before with Snyder and Whedon. How are people still buying into this? Reeves can't say anything bad about this legally. Directors aren't even allowed to Alan Smithee anymore in today's Hollywood.

@Irregular - Joss was a subsititute teacher too.

Zack Snyder endorsed him at comic cons. The news was that Zack handpicked Joss. Here's a quote from Chuck Roven at that time that we all bought into then (just like we're buying into the current PR spin today).

“We’re excited about the film, of course – but we were saddened by the events that caused Zack Snyder and Deborah Snyder to have to leave and turn the reins over to Joss Whedon. He was already working with us on some of the scenes for that additional photography that we’re going to be doing shortly. It was fortunate that Zack convinced him, and he agreed to step in and finish the movie – to help Zack finish his vision. We’re excited about that.”

Sound familiar?

@ObserverIO - Reeves has, in fact, not stepped down. The very news report you are relying on says so. Soderbergh will be shooting first unit, just as others are shooting second unit and third unit. Reeves is still the film's director and will be in charge of post-production.

When it comes out with Reeves' name on it, and Reeves publicly thanks Soderbergh, and they possibly even appear together at the premiere, I hope you know what you are going to say to explain away all this stuff you are spewing now.

ObserverIO - 10/17/2026, 12:32 PM
@FreddyH - That's what the report says yes. That is what Gunn says. What Gunn says makes no sense.

Gunn, as you reiterate, says that Soderbergh is not replacing Reeves as director. So then let me ask you a very easy question: What role will Soderbergh have?

(A: Director)

Well no, Reeves hasn’t been “replaced”, but he’s been given an assistant in a highly regarded film maker. It’s so unfortunate Reeves has this family issue to contend with, but it sounds like he’s still staying as hands on with the film as he can. I guess he’ll be watching dailies, giving notes, and then picking things up in post. A far different situation to what happened with Snyder and JL.

if we finally get an epic billion dollar plus smash with the MoT, many of the rumors will fade away.

The problem is that we have little or no indications that this will happen.

Gunn weakened Superman, rammed in a bunch of C-list characters, and worse, hardly used Lois at all. He has too much junk he seems to be committing to like Peacemaker, 99 doors multiverse thing, Salvation, Flagg Sr, garbage Green Lantern, Mr Miracle, comedy Grodd, etc., etc.

Blue Beetle, Metamorpho, Mr miracle before Batman, wonder Woman, & Flash?

Rumors should and will continue until Gunn gets something right.

Milly Alcock is distancing herself from Supergirl, because of the cyberbulling. She isn't fired.

I know Josh cooked up that article on here recently, but we all know he is very biased. Anything with Marvel Studios attached to it, expect 5/5 stars from Josh.
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 10/17/2026, 12:25 PM
Josh , i know you get annoyed if Gunn does anything really but him mostly being done with debunking rumors is true since there are so many of them about the DCU floating on social media that he’s only really getting to a handful tbh.

Anyway, people really need to let Gunn & Safran actually develop the universe and their plans because the DCU isn’t even 2 years old yet given Creature Commandos S1 started in December 2024 before asking for their [frick]ing heads or it to be rebooted!!.

All right, unpopular opinion time. I thought Supergirl as fantastc!. Not "decent" or "mid," but genuinely great. I bought it on physical media as soon as it was available and I'm proud to have it in my collection.

I've seen/read reviews of those who didn't like it much, and many of those reviews were well-reasoned and made a few good points. I don't agree with them, but I can respect their opinion.

And then there are ragers, the unhinged who insist IN ALL CAPS that it was the WORST THING EVER MADE!!!!! without really articulating why they feel that way.

How do I account for that? First, I think there were a lot of people who, as soon as they saw it in the DCU release schedule back in 2024, decided right then and there that they were going to hate it no matter what.

(Maybe because it starred a woman, so people leapt to the conclusion that it must have been a DEI thing without considering that it could be good on its own merits. The last financially successful superhero movies led by women were Wonder Woman in 2017 and Captain Marvel in 2019, but you'd be hard-pressed to find anyone today who will say they love those movies, and both of their sequels tanked).

Second, there is a contingent of people who loved the Woman of Tomorrow comic and are not happy that the movie deviated from that. Me, I never read that comic. (I can't say I've actually read any comic book since I graduated college in the mid 90s).

I think those two things, combined with a healthy dose of groupthink, has led to the unhinged escoriation of Supergirl in many places, including this forum. It's like everyone got the "You're supposed to hate Supergirl" memo and saluted it.

There is a reason the Supergirl writer is still writing DCU movies, despite the Supergirl flop. It's because Gunn and Safran know it was a great script and the movie failed due to outside cultural reasons. The script was a good script, it had a solid structure.

Still don't like Supergirl after my rant? Fine. But don't any of you love any movie that seems to be hated by everyone else? Or do you all just go with the flow and keep saluting? Do any of you ever say, "You know that movie sitting at 21% on Rotten Tomatoes? I actually think it was kind of great."

Anyone?
