The CW Are Planning A DC Comics Related Replacement For Smallville!

Dawn Ostroff, CW's entertainment president, has confirmed that a replacement for Smallville and possibly even a spin-off is being planned by the network...

At the recent Televisions Critic's Association press tour, Ostroff revealed that although Smallville is coming to an end after 10 years on the small screen, a replacement should follow soon after: "We have started to talk about if there are other DC comic book adaptations. We haven't picked anything else up to develop yet, but we would like to see something on the air, so we're going to work on it."

Although this is all a little vague, at least it shows that they are planning something! However, she did go on to say that a Smallville spin-off would be a possibility as well but still didnt go into a great amount of detail.

"We are talking about everything," she said when asked whether they'd consider another show featuring any of the Smallville cast. "The characters are there. We're looking at the DC library. There are different parts of the puzzle. At the end of the day, I would love to be able to say that Smallville is going off the air and now we have something else is coming on."

is it just me or does anyone think Welling could possibly pull off Cyclops? Don't get me wrong, I liked Marsden, but in all actuality, he is a little short for the role of Cyclops who is 6'3". Welling is 6'2.5" as to where Marsden is only 5'10". Plus he has that pretty boy presence. Not sure if he has that leadership personality though. Even though he is basically the Man of Steel (at least one version of him).

Maybe a Robin series...the Tim Drake version. Or Robin/Superboy. That's also a comic they need to start.

@Leee- I don't know if I'd want to see something as epic as LOSH or Martian Manhunter done on a tv budget but I like your other choices. :)

If I had to choose, it'd be a proper Superman TV show (finally with flying/costume of course) starring Tom Welling and Erica Durance along with a new cast of characters with the occassional cameo from some Smallville alumni! :) Oh, and as has been suggested before, they should call it "Metropolis".

However, the Batgirl series that Geoff Johns hinted at during Comic Con would be even better! I'd love to see a TV version of Gotham...however, knowing the CW, they'd probably end up making it a superhero version of Gossip Girl or Melrose Place! I wonder if they'd allow any sort of Batman references in it though!?

HAWKS: Really? I had a good look and couldnt find any articles with similar content to this one! I'll have another look now though, so thanks for the heads up mate! :)

Creature - 8/2/2010, 1:44 PM
Well, hey, they haven't done Superman yet. They've done Bizarro. A Batman series may or may not fare well. There's that Bat embargo however. I like Smallville's portrayal of Green Arrow. If he is a full-costume, pessimistic, bad ass by the end of season 10 I want a spin-off in Star City. Justin Hartley needs a goatee!! :)

Josh: Maybe I'm wrong. I looked also and couldn't find it. I could have sworn it was up a day or two ago. Sorry.

I found it, it must have been a direct copy of the original report because its been deleted.

Would love for it to be Supergirl, but I'd also take Green Arrow, Green Lantern, Aquaman (which would be really nice seeing as how they canned that one a few years back), Wonder Woman, and many others!

@Josh- If they did a Batgirl show (which would be awesome, btw), I'm sure they could at least reference Batman. If I remember it correctly, I'm pretty sure they even showed Batman and Catwoman briefly on the pilot episode of Birds of Prey. And on a side note, I think I remember hearing that the guy who played Batman was the same guy who played him in those Onstar commercials.

wolverinesfury @ I'm actually with you there dude, the pilot was really enjoyable, could've grown into something big!!!

JOSH @ They've done that already... its called LOIS & CLARK! ; P

JOSH- I don't know a show like that would be to much
like "Lois and Clark" (Dean Cain)..I think we
need something NEW!

NO GREEN ARROW!

I think THE OUTSIDERS!!

I mean think about it..Not everyone knows alot about them so they can take there time with a bunch of character development, and
backstory to sift through..There is alot of drama
and action, love stories, and comedy..It could really be a GREAT TV show...Also there is ALOT of alternate
characters to choose from..and many CAMEOS, to choose from..The possableities are endless!

Don't do a spinoff based on any of the characters in Smallville (unless they actually started a new show called Metropolis and it's about Clark as Superman)

If they do a "spinoff" it should be like a Green Lantern or Flash (not the kid in the Smallville episodes) or Batman show and some of the character from Smallville could work with one of those characters or something.

I honestly would not watch a Green Arrow spinoff or a Hawkman spinoff, or something like that. That would just fail because those characters are not as iconic and Smallville level production will just make them looks cheesy (which they already are but since they are only used occasionally in Smallville it works with Clark still as the focus)

HAWKS: Huh, well done on finding it anyway! I wasnt really around CBM Fri/Sat/Sun so I must have missed it because I've got no idea why it would have been deleted! Ah well, as long as this hasnt been seen by the majority I guess it's ok to leave it up! :)

MatchesMalone: Good points! They'd have to have some sort of explanation of her origins and of course why we never see him in subsequent episodes..! I'd actually like a Bruce Wayne/Batman TV show now I think about it!

LEE/PETE: I know...and I loved that show, lol! :D We've had a decade of Clark Kent just running around in his red and blue jacket and now I'd like to actually see Superman on TV for more than a handful of Smallville episodes! I understand why you want something with a new setting and character though which is why I'd love to see a Batgirl show. Or Nightwing. That would be awesome.

Please, no Smallville spin-off of any kind. There should be a DC series that has no ties to Smallville and should act like the DCU as we know it. We already know about a Blue Beetle series that could happen. Maybe a Zatanna series?

@pete420- Outsiders would be awesome!

@anil- Yeah, I know Batman and Catwoman weren't actually on the show, but the Huntress was their kid and they showed them briefly in ep 1 when they were explaining her origin. Oh, and Suicide Squad would be the shit!
