Superman IV vs. Superman Returns

Superman IV vs. Superman Returns

In this editorial i will be examining in-depth the reasons why I think 'Superman IV: The Quest for Peace' was at least better than 'Superman Returns'

Editorial Opinion

Hi there everyone! Ok, I'm making this editorial because to be quite frank...I've heard many people on here defend 'Superman Returns' and they defended it as a "great" film because to them it was better than "Superman IV" now I am NO 'Superman IV defender' i know the movie was a piece of sh!t heck, in one part of the movie you can see the wires holding up Chris Reeve as he flew. That is pathetic. Now on to my editorial...

I would just like to say that in the first place...Superman IV predates Superman Returns by TWENTY years...so really Superman Returns is EXPECTED to be better than Superman IV. I mean come on, with all the vast improvements in technology and source-material since the debut of "Superman IV" Superman Returns should have been LEAPS and BOUNDS beyond 'Superman IV'

The best comparison I could come up with for the relationship between 'Superman Returns' and 'Superman IV' is from the Bat-franchise- 'Batman Begins' and 'Batman and Robin'

I use them as a comparison because both 'Superman IV: The Quest for Peace' and "Batman and Robin' are the 4th films in their respective franchises...and both are considered by many the WORST of the franchises that effectively KILLED the characters on screen for a period of years. While 'Batman Begins' and 'Superman Returns' were meant to break new ground for the franchises after their 4th-film-failures.

But you compare them and you can easily see that 'Batman Begins' was FAAAAAR superior to 'Batman and Robin' in every way imaginable.

You look now at 'Superman IV' and 'Superman Returns' and the pathetic thing is...most people are stalemated as to which film was actually better. That is pathetic. There should be no question about it- 'Superman Returns' SHOULD HAVE BEEN WAAAAAY better than 'Superman IV'

Here I will begin to state my reasons as to WHY I think 'Superman IV' was actually better than 'Superman Returns'

1) Superman fought a REAL villain (yes...Nuclearman was lame as hell...but I still think that was better than what we got in Superman Returns- Kevin Spacey and Kumar) 'Superman IV' also had real action. My whole point is, no matter how cheesy and corny the fights were back then, AT LEAST he fought.

2) In 'Superman IV' Lex Luthor had finally evolved a bit. He finally moved beyond the petty real-estate swindles and decided to enter the Nuclear Arms race and sell weapons. In 'Superman Returns' he reverted back to his petty and lame real-estate plans. That is pitiful.

3) 'Superman IV' had a much more meaningful story- it was about ending nuclear war across the globe. Superman Returns had no meaningful story at all...so... Superman had a bastard child and ditched it for 5 years. WOW...what a prick. My biggest beef with Bryan Singer is the fact that he actually WORSENED the tired stereotype of Superman being a "boring hero" that is why 'BrIan Stinker' failed so miserably. He has ZERO respect for the source-material and ZERO respect for the comicbook fans.

Now let's examine these pictures shall we?

Ahhhh, Superman fighting. That is refreshing ;D

Compared to...

OOOPS! Wrong picture, sorry guys!

Here we go...Superman's two greatest opponents- Lex Luthor and Bryan Stinker.

Now I shall await the Bryan Singer blowup dolls to come in here and start bashing me for stating my honest opinion. But again...my overall viewpoint is this- Superman IV was better than Superman Returns. Both films sucked but Superman Returns SHOULD HAVE BEEN soooo much better what with advances in technology and source material there was no excuse for the film to be worse. It's like I said- 'Batman Begins' made people forget about 'Batman and Robin' but...'Superman Returns' made some people go back to 'Superman IV' and think "Well...the lame Nuclearman wasn't all THAT bad"

That's the real problem.

I never saw Superman IV so I wouldn't be able to compare them, and your number one and two points are the same thing.

@golden- Not really no. I separated them by 'real villain' and action packed film' You can have a film with a real villain but no real action. Imagine if the film had Nuclearman but he never fought Superman. I could still say the film had a real villain but didn't have action.

@golden- There I fixed it ok? I put reasons 1 and 2 together for one really massive reason why SR failed miserably.

Still doesn't make 'Superman Returns' a good movie.

golden123 - 4/24/2011, 10:39 AM
@LP4: Thanks for understanding my reasoning behind your number one and two points. As for Nuclearman being a real villain and Lex not. All I have to say is I never saw Quest for Peace so I can't argue.

LP4 - 4/24/2011, 10:44 AM
@golden- I hated Nuclearman. Lex Luthor is my #1 comicbook villain. But to be fair- Nuclearman can at least FIGHT.

Donner's Lex never fought, was campy and just wasn't all that evil to me. Real estate...really?

I'm a fan of the Lex from the comics and cartoons.

Dude, its frightening that you like Superman 4 over Superman Returns!???

WTF lol...

Yes it shouldn't of had a super kid and Superman should have thrown a punch and I hate STINGER (Singer) for the sh1T he pulls (mainly Fist A$$) but ROUTH was awesome and the sets were amazing and music and everything screamed SUPERMAN!

This teaser still is the best cbm teaser ever made =

Still gives me chills!

If you wanna rat on something completely destroying the Superman name its this =

[frick]ing FLASH GORDON... uh I mean SMALLVILLE! : P

Welling too!

Damn just be happy your not getting a sequel and that were getting SYNDER and CAVILL in a new SUPERMAN franchise!

Its time to leave RETURNS alone dude and just be happy! :)

@LEEE- Come on man, Superman IV at least had ACTION and a better story and no lame real-estate plot.

Plus...like I said- Superman IV predates Superman Returns by 20 years. SR had all the advances in technology and source-material so it should have been WAAAAAAAAAAAY better than Superman IV but clearly it wasn't.

That is a testament to how badly Singer failed.

Batman72012 - 4/24/2011, 10:58 AM
A thing that pissed me of about SR was that Supes didn't get his revenge on lex after being pwned by lex and his henchmen
golden123
golden123 - 4/24/2011, 10:58 AM
@LP4: Well, I meant Spacey's Lex because I knew from your other posts that you liked Luthor as a villain. I really am hoping that Luthor is in the Superman Reboot because I really want to see the modern era Lex done right on the big screen. I agree with LEEE777 you should be anticipating the future instead of dwelling on the past although even if the modern era Lex was in Superman Returns he still wouldn't of fought Superman (unless the exo-skeletal suit was brought in, but I've never been a fan of that) that wouldn't of made Returns a bad movie, though. The whole thing that makes LL a great villain against Superman is that Superman can have all the power in the world, but it won't do uch against Lex's mind. It's mind vs muscle or brain vs brawn.

golden123 - 4/24/2011, 10:59 AM
@Batman72012: Supes isn't about revenge.

@golden- I am looking forward to a hopefully good movie interpretation of Lex for once. But I dwell on the past because i see all these other CBMs coming out- GL, CAP and THOR and it makes me soooo angry how badly Bryan Singer fu*ked up. He had one of the biggest budgets in CBM history and he instead wasted it all.

Also in the comics and cartoons Lex has fought Supes even WITHOUT his battlesuit.

Birthright for example he was punching Superman in the face with no battlesuit.

Lex from STAS was also more of a fighter.

Even in Smallville Lex has gotten physical.

In the movies though he is always such a damn pathetic joke. It isn't even funny anymore.

I used to have lots of respect towards Singer, but after watching SR and hearing his x- men first class interviews, the guy is an unimaginative ass.
LP4
LP4 - 4/24/2011, 11:19 AM
@DoctorWho- Exactly the reason why I'm saying Superman IV was better.

Both films sucked. But damn, at least in Superman IV, Superman FOUGHT someone...and the story wasn't as bad at least as it was in SR.

That is sad...Superman Returns couldn't top Superman IV and those were low expectations right there.

As for Routh, I won't say much on that guy. He comes off as a very wooden-actor in most of his roles. The Superman-role will NOT wait for Routh to improve his acting...if he can't improve his acting then a new actor was really necessary. Henry Cavill will be great and he's already beefing up big time from the pics i saw. He is already about at Chris Evans body-mass muscle-wise. He should be able to top Evans and hopefully get to rival Hemsworth's muscle mass.

@Batman72012- Serious???!

Dear god that sounds horrible but at least it might've been better than the train-wreck stupid ass 'BrIan Stinker' created.

Singer is such a hack.

@LP4 Ya lol McG also had christopher walken as perry white and johnny depp as lex btw you're right singer is a douche

@DoctorWho-

As you can see, Cavill's arms look much bigger and more meatier. This is after what...maybe a month or two of fight-training? By August I'm sure Cavill will be Hemsworth-size!

Thanks goes out to- juansuperiton19 for the link!!!

Great article, I totally agree. The story in S4 was great if you take out the awful villains-nuclear man obviously but even worse was Lex's nephew, and it seemed like Hackman really wasn't trying.

But Superman giving a speech to the world about peace was awesome and a perfect way to end that franchise actually. Plus I loved the whole Clark/Superman double date thing, it really showed how amazing Reeve was.

The biggest thing I hated about Returns was just that it was a reboot and kind of a sequel to Superman 2 at the same time. That was a horrible idea. Routh was good and he looked/sounded a lot like Reeve but to me that just made it weirder.

The scene where he saved the plane is one of my favorite scenes ever and I thought Spacey was really good, but everything else was just boring. I'll take a bad movie that's kind of a fun over a boring movie any day.

@DoctorWho- Cavill has gotten significantly buffer than he was at Wondercon.

At Wondercon his arms were shrimpy. Now look at him. LOL

LP4 - 4/24/2011, 12:09 PM
Now compare those pics above to how he looked at Wondercon!!

After only what...1 month of fight training? Damn by August no doubt Cavill will BE FU*KING RIPPED!!!

LP4 - 4/24/2011, 12:13 PM
@JM4Superman- Thank you. See? I usually have a good point ;D

@Superguy- I know, both films were total shit. But I'm talking about which film was the lesser of two shits. And that goes to Superman IV.

LP4 - 4/24/2011, 12:17 PM
@DoctorWho- Hahhaa thanks man but i ripped those from "juansuperiton19" He's the REAL scooper on these pics ;D

Again this is after just TWO months of fight-training people!!!

Imagine what Cavill will look like in 3 MORE MONTHS!!! He will be the MOST RIPPED SUPERMAN EVER in film history!!! We're witnessing history in the making here people ;D

LP4 - 4/24/2011, 12:31 PM
@DoctorWho- Yeah I know what you mean. I'm sure Cavill can do it. I view Cavill in the same vein as I do Christian Bale. They literally become the characters they portray.

True, I have seen some of that 'Tudors' show lately and he's pretty good in it!

He has a very strong cult-following and people have wanted him to be Superman for a long time.

Before I say what I think, In my honest opinion there hasnt ever been a definitive Superman movie. The first 2 were good (remarkable in fact) for their time, but are VERY dated now. The third and fourth were a dissapointment. Returns was a step back in the right direction IMO but still had a lot of faults.
Gotta agree with most of what LEEE said (although I still think Singer isnt TOO bad, just the normal level of bad directing, but he's not as bad as, say Michael Bay circa Transformers Revenge of the Fallen, or worse still... Joel Shumacker), in fact, I couldn't even watch Superman 4 all the way through, it was quite embarrasing to watch, how Chris Reeve went from being a great Superman in a good couple of films, to a slightly less great Superman in a couple of movies that seemed more like parodies than actual Superman films.
The story to Superman 4 was just... overly political, borderline hippy, and was even more disrespectful to the source material than Returns. Returns actually had a pretty decent story, it's about Superman's return (duh) and how he readjusts to life as Earth's greatest protector after 5 years. As for the kid, maybe he shouldnt have been in the film, but I was actually intrigued as to what they would have done with him in the planned sequel, Clark HAS had children in different forms in the comics (e.g. Chris Kent, his adopted son/ the son of Zod) but it probably wasnt right for a movie, especially the revival of public interest in the most iconic Superhero on the silver screen after 20 years. But the story telling in Returns, combined with the effects, acting of Routh and Spacey, and ESPECIALLY the sense of nostalgia, made it the better film IMO.
AC1
AC1 - 4/24/2011, 2:27 PM
and yeah, we get Man Of Steel next year anyway with Cavill and Snyder, which should be epic, and COULD be the definitive Superman film.
Im concerned that critics might feel Man Of Steel is TOO different to Donner's film series, since a lot of movie goers dont realise that those films actually arent that faithful to the source material and think that Reeve and Donner's Superman IS THE Superman film.

In My Opinion Smallville Is Better Then Superman IV And Superman Returns But Agree With The Article Totally

And Smallville Has Been Going On For An Amazing Ten Years. With Some Crappy Episodes Not Seasons.

Smallville Is Brilliant

@HotLunch- No one gives a crap about your opinion, it's MY editorial about which film I thought was better and some people agreed with me. Why don't you go trolling a different article douche?

@ACira- I would still put Michael Bay above Singer. At least Bay made a really good Transformers film (the first one) and at least his film managed to keep me awake.
