Like a lot of major big-screen releases with franchise potential, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem features a mid-credits scene, and it's certain to make TMNT fans very happy indeed!
Major spoilers follow.
At the end of the animated reboot, Leo, Donnie, Raph and Mikey ditch their signature bandanas and enrol in high school, seemingly putting their crime-fighting days behind them before they'd really even begun.
However, as the Heroes in a Half-Shell begin to settle in (Donnie finds like-minded geeks, Raph joins the wrestling team, Mikey practices his stand-up, and Leo asks April to the prom), we see that they are being kept tabs on by Cynthia Ultrom.
The sinister villain knows where to find the Turtles, but is fully aware that she's going to need more help taking them down now that they have joined forces with Superfly's mutant brothers and sisters, and decides to call in an ally of her own.
As we pan back over the moonlit rooftops, a familiar-looking spiked shoulder, helmet and cloak come into view, and we hear Ultrom say: "Bring me the Shredder!"
So, if Mutant Mayhem does get a sequel, it looks like the Turtles' most feared enemy, Oroku Saki, will be introduced. With no Hamato Yoshi, it's going to be interesting to see if the character will still have some kind of connection to Splinter, or if he'll simply debut as a mercenary for hire.
Will Bebop and Rocksteady end up joining forces with Shredder, as they tend to do in most TMNT iterations?
“After years of being sheltered from the human world, the Turtle brothers set out to win the hearts of New Yorkers and be accepted as normal teenagers through heroic acts. Their new friend April O’Neil helps them take on a mysterious crime syndicate, but they soon get in over their heads when an army of mutants is unleashed upon them.”
Micah Abbey, Shamon Brown Jr., Nicolas Cantu and Brady Noon will voice the roles of Donatello, Michelangelo, Leonardo and Raphael, respectively. The cast also includes Jackie Chan as Splinter, Hannibal Buress as Genghis Frog, Rose Byrne as Leatherhead, Ice Cube as Superfly, Natasia Demetriou as Wingnut, Ayo Edebiri as April O’Neil, Giancarlo Esposito as Baxter Stockman, Post Malone as Ray Fillet, Paul Rudd as Mondo Gecko, and Maya Rudolph as Cynthia Utrom.
Jeff Rowe (The Mitchells vs. the Machines) directed Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, which is produced by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg.
