After Black Adam and Shazam! Fury of the Gods both flopped, Warner Bros. decided to take a slightly different approach to marketing The Flash.
As well as making use of endorsements from the likes of Tom Cruise, Stephen King, and even DC Studios boss James Gunn (who insists it's his favourite movie of 2023), the decision was made to premiere an unfinished cut of the $220+ million movie during April's CinemaCon. Spoilers immediately started finding their way online, while fan screenings are taking place just under a month before The Flash's theatrical release.
In an interview with Esquire Middle Earth, director Andy Muschietti dropped quite the bombshell by confirming that Nic Cage makes a cameo appearance in the movie as Superman.
"Nic was absolutely wonderful," the filmmaker tells the site. "Although the role was a cameo, he dove into it...I dreamt all my life to work with him. I hope I can work with him again soon."
“He is a massive Superman fan. A comic book fanatic," Muschetti added.
The Kick-Ass and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse star was originally lined up to play the Man of Steel in Tim Burton's ill-fated Superman Lives. The project fell apart for a variety of reasons, though photos of a costume test with Cage suited up while rocking a mullet have done the rounds online for years.
When it comes to what this cameo will actually look like, we've heard that he'll be shown battling the infamous giant spider which was once one of the scrapped movie's lead villains.
It's surprising to see Muschietti talk openly about Cage's role in The Flash this soon, but there's always a chance the site in question has broken some sort of embargo. The information is out there now, though, and we'd expect spoilers to continue cropping up across social media in the weeks ahead.
The Flash is set to arrive in theaters on June 16.
