RUMOR: THOR 5 Scheduled To Film Next Year; Writer And Director Currently Being Sought

Coming off persistent rumors that Marvel Studios is developing a fifth Thor movie, a reliable source is now claiming that production is currently scheduled to commence in 2025...

We've heard conflicting reports about Marvel Studios' plans for a fifth solo Thor movie (not exactly surprising after the reception to Love and Thunder), but this latest rumor claims that the movie is indeed officially in development, and is scheduled to film as soon as next year.

According to Daniel Richtman, Thor 5 is "listed as happening on the grid to film Fall 2025." He adds that he's "not sure if it means it will be a post-Secret Wars project, my bet would be yes." Marvel is said to be searching for a writer and director for the project.

Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi took himself out of the running to helm the movie late last year. An earlier rumor claimed that Gareth Edwards (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, The Creator) was being eyed to take over.

"I saw those rumors, too," Edwards said in an interview shortly after the rumor did the rounds. "I saw it and I jokingly sent it to my girlfriend. I just texted her the link and said, ‘I didn’t want you to find out this way.' I’ve never heard anything about it. It’s totally… the internet is an incredible place. I love those movies. I love Marvel, a lot of my friends work on Marvel films. I love all the other movies and franchises, I go to see them. I have most of them on my DVD/Blu-ray shelf. But I really want to keep pursuing original sci-fi. Was that a very politically correct answer? I never say never. In the right circumstances, absolutely."

We recently learned that Edwards is set to direct the next Jurassic World movie for Universal, so even if he has had a conversation about Thor, it's highly unlikely that anything came of it.

Whoever ends up helming the movie, we can probably expect a slightly darker, more serious tone than Love and Thunder, which was widely criticized for taking Ragnarök's light-hearted elements to overly silly levels.

If Chris Hemsworth does take up Mjölnir again, it might well be for the final time. Here's what the Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga star had to say about a potential return last year.

"I feel like we’d probably have to close the book if I ever did it again, you know what I mean?" the actor said of possibly reprising the role. "I feel like it probably warrants that. I feel like it’d probably be the finale, but that’s not based on anything anyone’s told me or any sort of plans. You have this birth of a hero, the journey of a hero, then the death of a hero, and I don’t know...am I at that stage? Who knows?"

Assuming it does become a reality, who would you most like to see take a crack at a fifth Thor movie? Drop us a comment down below.

"Thor embarks on a journey unlike anything he's ever faced -- a quest for inner peace. However, his retirement gets interrupted by Gorr the God Butcher, a galactic killer who seeks the extinction of the gods. To combat the threat, Thor enlists the help of King Valkyrie, Korg and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster, who -- to his surprise -- inexplicably wields his magical hammer. Together, they set out on a harrowing cosmic adventure to uncover the mystery of the God Butcher's vengeance."

@DocSpock - Thor Contest of Champions would be great. With Hercules, Zeus, and others coming for Thor after the events of Love and Thunder and Beta Ray Bill becomes an unlikely ally because Zeus plundered his planet after Thanos eliminated 50% of the Corbinites during a planetary purge.

Get George Miller. If he's willing to do it, get out of his way and let him do it.

@BobGarlen - the correct answer. He'd make the greatest Thor film ever. Probably the greatest Marvel film ever.

@BobGarlen - Didn't they do exactly that with Taika Waititi?
BobGarlen
BobGarlen - 5/27/2024, 10:43 AM
@Razorface1 - They did, but I'd argue that Miller is hands down a better filmmaker. Waititi has shown that he's at his best when he works with restraint. Miller has made a few of the most iconic action movies of all time working off his own imagination. Personally, I'd offer Miller the creative freedom that Waititi took advantage of.

@BobGarlen - Fair enough, but I believe movies meant to be inside a cohesive cinematic universe NEED oversight.

@Razorface1 - that's fair. Producers are at their beat when they're supportive, and constructive criticism is support.

Hopefully they can get Gay Black Doctor WHO to play Gay Black Doctor Doom and Thor can crossover with Cuatro Fantásticos and Chick Loki can knee him in the balls over and over in a pocket universe for eternity.

If this rumor was to be true then both a writer and director needed to found by now as neither one has been found this is most likely a lie at best.

@batman001 - nope. Not always how it works, especially with these big franchise projects. Also, it's entirely possible the studio has a creative team in mind but no offers have been made.

Straight up, it does but me a bit that Hemsworth hasn’t had the best time in the MCU. He loves the character and enjoys performing the role, but it hasn’t gone smoothly. I know there’s blame to be placed, and lord knows Love & Thunder gave a bunch to criticize, but it’s just a darn shame from one of the OG Avengers. And Hemsworth and Branagh’s Thor made me a fan of a character I didn’t like before and never really got, him being a god in a superhero world; the MCU made it click for me.

@IAmAHoot - it’s definitely been a bit rocky but doesn’t mean I feel he hasn’t had a good time

I watching his recent episode of Hot Ones and he just seems like a guy that likes to challenge himself as much as possible…

?si=45fWUqPZt2dgy7_V

He had just gotten a bit bored of playing the character around TDW or AOU time and felt he was too boxed in and wasn’t enough there for him to play with hence Ragnarok happened which was a tonal departure and allowed Hemsworth to bring more of himself in the role..

I’ll still say that the 3 film arc from Ragnarok ,IW and EG was so strong (I know some had criticisms about Fat Thor but the intent behind it resonants with me) and now after L & T maybe swung a bit too far into the silly for some (I liked it overall) , it’s just time for another reinvention

It keeps the character fresh and Hensworth engaged.

@TheVisionary25 - And I would retort that there is a reason he got bored playing the character... because he hadn't had the best time. Critical reception aside (for now), Whedon has stated that with Thor especially he wasn't too sure what to do with him of all the characters. The Dark World was one that especially got him tired of Thor as we knew him. Ragnarok gave him what he wanted in going for a more Guardians of the Galaxy tone. He was the MVP of Infinity War (or Doctor Strange, or Thanos). Great in Endgame, but the comedic tone they dragged over from Ragnarok didn't land as well as they'd hoped, I feel. And even he has expressed proper regrets about how Love & Thunder turned out. I've enjoyed all of his appearances, but doesn't mean it was all the same for him personally, especially with all the effort required and invested.
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 5/26/2024, 3:42 PM
@IAmAHoot - fair enough

Grated both of us are just assuming but just by interviews and stuff , it seems atleast he’s had a better time from Ragnarok onwards (issues with L & T notwithstanding which he seems to blame himself moreso for being caught up in improv-Inc etc) then he did pre atleast

@IAmAHoot -

Classic case of needing comedy but then leaning too heavy into it by Thor 4 that was just slapstick parody at that point. Thor 4 was like a Weird Al version of the original.

Classic doubling down on what they thought worked in Ragnarok but did they forget INFINITY WAR AND THE END OF ENDGAME where Thor was a freaking Beast??

They have to ground thor and reverse the shit show that is love and blunder. Undo all the crap and jokes that taika dis. Love doesn't exist in canon, give storm breaker to beta Ray Bill and get thor back with mjolnir and acting like a god. Make odin the power behind the hammers. Then have him fight a recast Hercules thats not gay, a bruiser serious type and then they join forces with Hercules and beta Ray Bill to fight mangog, a universe level threat. If you want a billion dollar hit, bring the fantastic 4 as well. Easy, just reverse all that shit that taika did.

Have Zeus and an army of Gods wipe out all of new Assgard and all of Taiki's character's, preferably offscreen but have Sif survive some how to get the message out that Zeus has taken over Midgard which force's Thor to ditch the kid and go after his grandad who has the actual Odin force and then have Thor go Kratos on Zeus's army, have Sif Tag along with maybe Loki and find Beta Ray along the way. Make it an actual event movie like how they handled civil war, have some of whatever's left of the Avengers around but to a minimum.
