No, THOR 5 Is Not In Development At Marvel Studios

This weekend, an online rumor surfaced that proposed that not only is a fifth Thor film in development at Marvel Studios but director Taika Waititi is in line to return.

Contrary to assertions from an anonymous, online "reliable scooper," Thor 5 is not in development at Marvel Studios.

It looks as if Thor: Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi's comments on a "potential" Thor 5 in Thor: Love and Thunder’ The Official Movie Special were used to create the narrative that another film was in the works and that Taika wants to return.

Veteran Hollywood trade Variety, has confirmed that the film is not actually in development.

Waititi's actual quote from the book reads:

"What is left to do to him? It’s got to be something that feels like it’s carrying on with the evolution of the character, but still in a very fun way and still giving him things to come up against that feel like they’re building on the obstacles that he has to overcome. I don’t think we can have a villain that’s weaker than Hela. I feel like we need to step up from there and add a villain that’s somehow more formidable."

This statement was somehow twisted into implying that Thor 5 was in development and Waititi was likely to return.

Previously, Thor actor Chris Hemsworth told Entertainment Weekly that he only wants to return for another solo Thor movie if all the conditions are right.

"I don’t want to continue to do it until people are so exhausted that they roll their eyes when they see me come on the screen as that character. If an audience wants to see it, and if there’s something that we believe is exciting and fun, then great. I’ve loved being able to reinvent that character a few times. I don’t have the answer yet, but I would love to try and [figure out] how we can do that again and keep it a little unpredictable."

Hemsworth also told GQ that he thought Love and Thunder went a step too far with its humor.

"I think we just had too much fun. It just became too silly. It’s always hard being in the center of it and having any real perspective…I love the process, it’s always a ride. But you just don’t know how people are going to respond."

That's not exactly a ringing endorsement from Hemsworth on a new installment, much less Taika's return.

Currently, there are no official plans for Chris Hemsworth's God of Thunder to return but the expectation is that he will have a role in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and/or Avengers: Secret Wars.

I don't love the idea of Thor being a father and going against the pantheon of Greek Gods all happening mostly off screen and then we get the next bunch of Avengers movies and they kill him off or something but I guess you could run in the danger of diminishing returns with a fifth movie, even with a new director and a more... "serious" tone.

@WakandanQueen - You were fine with Thor receiving brain damage off-screen and Hulk randomly ending up in another galaxy after Age of Ultron in Thor 3. It's not like the MCU cares about context much when they want to ignore their own bullshit.

I still say they should do a war film between Asgard and Olympus. First recton Asgard and Thor away from the goofball caricatures they are now. They should also incorporate the Eternals. Thor and Eternals are two franchises that desreve way better than what we got.

@Forthas - I know it sounds silly but what about a Battle Royale style movie? Zeus launches an assault on New Asgard with Hercules and his Olympians and demands that New Asgard call for Thor to face trial at Olympus to avoid further bloodshed. Thor, Valkyrie, and Korg arrive on Olympus and discover that Zeus has set up an arena and if Thor wants to be free he must battle. Thor builds his team consisting of Thor, Lady Sif, Valkyrie, Korg, Miek, and Baldur the Brave. Zeus reveals his team consisting of Hercules, Beta Ray Bill, and others. They all get dropped at random places in this massive arena and must find other another to survive.

@NinnesMBC - Yeah. I would even tie it into Ragnarok where Surtur still survived and went on to attack whatever planet was in his grasp growing strong with each destruction. Olympus had to clean up Asgard's mess and removed Surtur's crown on Planet Korbin. The engulfing flames completely engulfed the Galaxy in which Korbin was. Upon leaving, Zeus saw a young scared Beta Ray who was the only one left from the war. Zeus took pity and took him on his chariot as Korbin engulfed in flames. Zeus blamed Asgard for what happened. So over the years, Zeus and Hercules trained Beta Ray to be a great warrior to hunt down any Asgardian who survived for revenge on what happened to the innocent planets. But all Zeus wanted was no Asgardian left so he could rewrite history and make Olympus the grand God realm.

@SonOfAGif - That is very imaginative. The only thing I might not do is have Olympians go full villain. I think there should be another antagonist that provokes the war that might have an interest in seeing both Asgard and Olympus fall. I can't think of who that might be but beings like the Celestials are too overpowered. They would just attack Asgard and Olympus. Not sure who! Maybe Hela teaming up with Ares?

"What is left to do to him?"

Asks the guy who has been very open about finding the character "boring" the minute he got the gig and ended his first movie in a way that deliberately made adapting most of the yet untouched comic stories and characters related to Thor franchise at best challenging, almost impossible at worst.

@WEAPONXOXOXO - A character who in the comics embodies wisdom and speaks like an ancient poet is reduced in movies to a himbo dolt.

[frick]ing amazing...
