Thor 4 is officially happening and if you guys are anything like us, you're counting down the days until the
Thor: Ragnarok sequel reaches the big screen (even if we, you know, don't actually know when that will be right now). No details have been revealed beyond Taika Waititi's return as writer/director but that definitely gives us a starting point.
Earlier today,
we took a look at ten possible storylines the movie could tackle but what about supporting characters? You may not think they're important but would the MCU look the same if we didn't have the likes of War Machine, Bucky, and even Ned Leeds?
Most of the God of Thunder's supporting players are dead; The Warriors Three were killed in short order by Hela in
Thor: Ragnarok, while poor Heimdall was taken out by Thanos in
Avengers: Infinity War. The question now is, who can possibly step up and take their place in this fourth movie?
Below, you'll find our favourite suggestions, some of whom we're willing to bet you won't be familiar with (Thor Girl, anyone?). To check out the article in its entirety, simply hit the "View List" button!
Balder
Fans have been hoping to see Balder on the big screen since the first movie was announced but he's been left on the shelf and hasn't even been referenced in the years that have followed.
One of Thor's closest friends since childhood, Balder was later outed as Thor's half-brother but his true parentage was kept a secret due to the fear that his death would bring about Ragnarok. Well, that's happened and he could easily arrive in New Asgard looking to wrestle control of that away from both Valkyrie and his brother, something that would make him an interesting supporting player.
Silver Surfer
Marvel Studios has finally regained the rights to the
X-Men and
Fantastic Four franchises and while it's going to be a while before we see those teams in their own movies, there's really no reason why characters from both worlds can't start popping up elsewhere in the meantime.
Silver Surfer being introduced in the Thor franchise makes perfect sense and you just know that Waititi could so something fun with the cosmic character. A team-up between him and the God of Thunder would lead to fans losing their minds, while some big hints about Galactus' existence could obviously go a very long way in setting up this shared world's next big bad.
Sif
Sif obviously isn't a new character to Thor's world but we haven't seen her in action since 2013's
Thor: The Dark World. That's been blamed on Jaimie Alexander's busy television schedule but there's a very clear desire for her to return as Sif and there's no way Marvel Studios could have ignored that.
There's a big mystery surrounding Sif's whereabout and seeing as she was last seen leaving The Aether with The Collector, Thor choosing to leave the Guardians of the Galaxy could easily be explained if he decides to try and track his old friend down and discover what's happened to her since 2013.
Tyr
Another of Thor's little-known siblings (you didn't think Loki was the only one, did you?), Tyr is the God of War and lost his left hand while battling the Fenris Wolf long before the God of Thunder was born. However, Odin being the "great" dad he is meant that he replaced Tyr with Thor as Asgard's protector and that led to an awful lot of jealousy and resentment.
Over the years, Tyr has attacked Thor on a number of occasions and even aligned himself with Loki to unleash the Midgard serpent on Earth. It's hard to say how he could fit into the next movie but there are definitely some exciting things Waititi could do by delving into some of the hero's other siblings after he learned of Hela's existence in
Thor: Ragnarok.
The only problem here is that we briefly met the character in a flashback in
The Dark World!
Thunderstrike
Thunderstrike is a pretty obscure character from the comics and not one most of us are probably ever expecting to see on screen. His origin story is pretty bizarre and would need to undergo some changes but this definitely feels like a character Waititi could do some weird and wonderful things with, while also introducing a new supporting character to the God of Thunder's world.
Eric Masterson was an architect bonded with Thor after the hero was punished for killing Loki. While Thor was eventually freed, Eric was given an enchanted mace by Odin as thanks for his service and took on the mantle of Thunderstrike. He's not exactly a popular character but he was a member of the Thor Corps alongside Beta Ray Bill and seeing that group on screen could be awesome.
Throg
Thor alluded to Loki turning him into a frog in
Thor: Ragnarok but what you may not realise is that Throg is actually a character in his own right who the God of Thunder met when he had been transformed by his mischievous brother. Named Puddlegulp, the frog was actually once human before being transformed by a Romani.
After finding a sliver of Thor's hammer, Puddlegulp remains in his frog form but uses that to transform himself into Throg, Frog of Thunder. Honestly, the whole thing is ridiculous and I don't know how it could be incorporated into the next movie but there's no denying that this would be fun to see in a live-action setting.
Lorelei
Assuming Waititi is planning on using Enchantress in the next Thor movie (and he really should), then having Lorelei appear would definitely be a smart move. She too is obsessed with the God of Thunder and could make for an interesting foil to her similarly Thor loving sister.
In the comics, she too uses an elixir to get Thor to fall in love with her but a livid Enchantress then casts a spell to make Lorelei fall in love with Loki. All of this would obviously need to be changed to be less male-centric but if Enchantress is coming to the MCU, Lorelei could be a compelling presence as either an ally to Thor or her villainous sister.
We've seen her on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., of course, but it's not like that show is exactly canon!
Clor/Ragnarok
When Thor was M.I.A. after the events of Ragnarok, Iron Man, Mister Fantastic, and Hank Pym used their combined genius to create a cloned version of Thor who was dubbed "Clor" by Spider-Man.
He later returned with a new persona - Ragnarok - and while I have absolutely no idea how a cloned version of the God of Thunder could be incorporated into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there's no denying that a "fake" version of Thor protecting Earth in his absence might be a fun subplot, especially if he's later chosen to join the ranks of the Dark Avengers by the MCU's Norman Osborn.
Beta Ray Bill
Beta Ray Bill is a great character and one whose existence was pretty much confirmed in
Thor: Ragnarok when a statue seemingly revealed that he had once battled in The Grandmaster's arena.
Assuming Thor has parted ways with the Guardians of the Galaxy, then we could pick up with him in outer space where he could come across Beta Ray Bill. A team-up between these two would be a blast and while I'm not sure how or why the God of Thunder would give Bill his Stormbreaker axe/hammer, there's a lot of potential for these two on the big screen.
Thor Girl
I was actually going to include Jane Foster in this final slot and definitely think the character could return to the big screen in an exciting way in this movie as a new God of Thunder. However, if you would like to read more on that, you can do so by checking out our breakdown of the storylines we want to see adapted in the
Thor: Ragnarok sequel
by clicking here.
As for Thor Girl, she was an alien who became an ally of Thor's after he helped stop Thanos from destroying her planet. After accompanying him to Earth, she transformed herself into Thor Girl and you can probably see how this could tie into
Avengers: Endgame. Giving the hero a female sidekick could be a lot of fun and would introduce another possible Young Avenger!
