Aside from some set photos showing Natalie Portman's Jane Foster approaching the shattered remains of Mjolnir on a shrine in New Asgard, we know very little about her transformation into the Mighty Thor in Thor: Love and Thunder. Something clearly happens when Jane gets near the God of Thunder's old hammer, but we're anticipating some changes when this story is translated to screen.

Fans of Jason Aaron's Thor run will know that Jane had cancer when she gained Thor's powers, and while becoming a Thunder God made her healthy, the transformations hastened the disease's spread. Now, the description for a replica helmet confirms that the MCU's Jane will also have cancer.

"Suffering from cancer, astrophysicist and Thor’s ex-girlfriend, Jane Foster, visited New Asgard and her life was changed forever," reads these new Thor: Love and Thunder details shared on Eaglemoss' website. "Mysteriously, the broken pieces of Mjolnir, the hammer of the thunder god, transformed her into the Mighty Thor and gifted her the superpowers of Thor, to battle threats internal and external. Wielding Mjolnir herself, she had become a godly protector and a new hero was born!"

"With the help of Thor, Valkyrie, and the Guardians of the Galaxy, the Mighty Thor was faced by the powerful Gorr, the God Butcher. With divine powers himself, Gorr was driven to rid the universe of gods wherever he found them," it continues. "Battling cancer in her human form and Gorr in her godly form, Jane Foster was embroiled in an epic struggle with plenty of love and thunder!"

There's a fair bit to unpack there, though much of what's said confirms the many theories surrounding the Thor: Ragnarok sequel. Jane having cancer could be what brings her to New Asgard; while it's possible she'll be looking for a cure, something tells us she's there to say goodbye to her old flame.

Hopefully, the Mighty Thor does have a future in the MCU beyond this movie because the character has a tonne of potential. Her comic book counterpart even becomes romantically involved with Captain America (Sam Wilson), and that's a relationship we'd definitely like to see play out on the big screen.

Thor: Love and Thunder arrives in theaters on July 8.
