TRANSFORMERS Animated Movie To Focus On Early Days Of Cybertron And Origins Of Optimus & Megatron

We finally have some details on the Transformers animated film that was announced earlier this year, and the untitled movie is going to focus on the early days of Cybertron before the Autobot/Decepticon war.

Earlier this year, Paramount Pictures announced that a new animated Transformers movie is in-development, and is set for release on July 19, 2024.

That's pretty much all that was revealed about the project at the time, but thanks to Collider, we now have a much better idea of what to expect.

While being interviewed for the site, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura basically laid out the entire premise of the movie, confirming that the story would be primarily set on the home planet of the Robots in Disguise, Cybertron.

He also revealed that the untitled film will serve as an origin story for both Optimus Prime and his nemesis, Megatron, who started out as close friends before the Autobots and Decepticons split apart and went to war.

"We debated a lot about it in live action, and it just was financially impossible to do, which is, the origin story of young Megatron and young Optimus. If you know the origin, they started as friends, and over time things devolved for them and they ended up on two sides. So we're telling the young Optimus and the young Megatron story. We really are telling the origin story of all Transformers, both what they were at the beginning of it, to how they grow, to how they grow apart."

Bonaventura then explained why their idea simply wouldn't be feasible for a live-action film, going on to reveal that they are hoping to have enough material for a trilogy.

"We’re hoping that there is enough emotional construct to that, that would lead to a trilogy of it because, personally, I think there's a natural trilogy. I'm not always looking to do multiple movies, but there's a natural trilogy around their relationship. So, you're going to see Cybertron in a way you've never seen it, that no one's ever seen it before. Because we're doing an animation, we're allowed to really go all out. If you tried to make this live-action, it would probably be a billion-dollar movie or something."

Many fans still consider the '80s animated movie to be a high point of the entire Transformers franchise, so there's sure to be a lot of excitement for this one.

@dragon316 - Well yeah. They will have different looks because they are still on Cybertron and haven't gone to Earth yet. They will have their original Cybertron forms. This is how its always been, even in G1. Why would they have vehicle forms from Earth if they've never been to Earth?

I have faith in Paramount.

@vectorsigma - Paramount needs to do something about GI Joe. David Leitch can do something really fun with a lot of popcorn action.

"Many fans still consider the '80s animated movie to be a high point of the entire Transformers franchise"

You mean the movie where they violently murdered all the original Transformers for the sole purpose of introducing new robots to sell more toys?

What was that about Michael Bay ruining your childhood...

They already told this story in the original eighties cartoons. Optimus (Orion pax) was a labourer robot and megatron (megatronus) was as a gladiator.

@Vampyre75 - Also told in the IDW comics.

@Vampyre75 - Orion Pax as a dockworker, yes. Megatron as a gladiator? Not so much. (They hadn’t even come up with the name ‘Megatronus’ when “War Dawn” aired.)

@Vampyre75 @CorndogBurglar @FlixMentallo21 - It really depends on the source. even within the IDW TF comics (I have all of them in graphic novel form along with the Marvel US/UK and Dreamwave ones) their history varies somewhat if you include the most recent short-lived reboot before IDW lost the TF license (which has yet to be picked up by another comics company as far as I know). But according to IDW "Megatronus" was one of the original 13 primes snd later became known as "The Fallen" after he fell from grace. And Megatron as a miner and part of the gladiator scene on Cybertron was first developed in IDW's "Transformers Megatron Origin" limited series as far as I can recall (he even had long blonde "hair" that came out when he took his "bucket head" helmet off).

Orion Pax (also called "Optronix" in the Dreamwave publications as well as Fun Publications Shattered Glass comics) has been everything from a dockworker like you said to a police chief to a data archivist to a senator before he became OP. Most of the time recently OP and Megs have been portrayed as starting off in opposing positions of power like senators with Megs representing a group of disadvantaged and "lower class" TTs (who become the Decepticons) while the Autobots are portrayed almost like higher class, even oppressive 'bots (depending on who's point of view you're hearing it from). And as DiBonaventura said, OP and Megs are usually portrayed as having been friends at one point.

So my point with all that unnecessary exposition is that they have A LOT of varying backstory that they can choose from, however I doubt that they're going to go too far into any obvious political characterizations and representations like they have in the more recent comics. And I'm VERY confident that we won't see any My Little Pony crossovers like they did TWICE in the recent comics. But you never know 😉.

Soooo when you say animated...are we talking Miles Morales animated or THE BEGINNING SCENE FROM BUMBLE BEE?!?!?!?! *salivating and foaming from mouth*
TheIronDuck
TheIronDuck - 4/22/2023, 10:22 AM
@TheRationalNerd - I always thought this movie was going to be in the style of the Cybertron flashbacks from Bumblebee and only animated in the same sense that the last lion king movie was animated. Having no actual footage recorded given that the environments are 100% digital and the movie contains no humans.
MasterMix

@TheRationalNerd - It'll probably be like The Lion King remake in the sense that it's photo realistic CGI.

@TheRationalNerd @TheIronDuck @MasterMix - From what I've read on the various TF sites that I frequent, it'll be like the opening scene in "Bumblebee". That scene was INCREDIBLY popular with the fans (myself included) and Hasbro is still making figures of all the characters that you saw in that scene as part of their Studio Series line, even though the entire scene was only ~7 minutes long. I mentioned in the previous article about "TF:RotB" yesterday that Megatron was originally supposed to be in that scene and they got as far as detailed character designs before Hasbro/Paramount told Travis Knight that they didn't want Megatron included so as to not contradict the Bay movies so that they make them all in the same continuity if they chose to (it's still not officially all in the same continuity as far as I know).

That artwork of Megatron just surfaced as package art on a "new" figure for "TF:RotB" (which is a previously used Titan changers figure repackaged): https://collecticontoys.com/products/transformers-rise-of-the-beasts-megatron-titan-changers. However I haven't heard whether or not they will use the same design of the new animated movie.

And lo, as told in Bumblebee 09:18-84 "After all is said and done; You've never walked, you've never run; You're a winner." Let us pray to the great Spark, amen.

@Reeds2Much - I have that exact figure standing on my desk about a foot away from me (minus the cross plus the ion blaster and talking base of course). He helps defend my office against unwanted Zoom meetings.

I was just mentioning this in yesterday's "TF:RotB" saying that I wish someone would post something about it so that I didn't have to keep bringing it up whenever someone said that they wished that they would make a new animated movie like to the opening scene in "Bumblebee", and here it is. Thanks @MarkCassidy! You actually got real quotes and stuff as opposed to me just sounding like I was making shit up 😊.
