TRANSFORMERS: RISE OF THE BEASTS Cast HELLBOY Star Ron Perlman To Voice Optimus Primal

There's some exciting news for Transformers: Rise of the Beasts today, as this live-action take on Beast Wars has added Ron Perlman as the heroic and formidable Optimus Primal. Read on for details...

It's been confirmed today that Ron Perlman (Hellboy) will lend his voice to Optimus Primal in Transformers: Rise of the Beasts. The actor actually has some experience with the role after playing this heroic leader of the Maximals in the Transformers: Power of the Primes animated series.

However, it was Garry Chalk who originally voiced the character in the Beast Wars: Transformers show.

Regardless, this 90s set adventure has definitely added a big name to its voice cast, and we're expecting more reveals to drop in the coming weeks. The movie will introduce the Maximals, Predacons, and Terrorcons to the existing battle on Earth between Autobots and Decepticons, and Optimus Primal is definitely a Transformer you should be excited about seeing on screen.

The captain of the spaceship Axalon, he once saved Optimus Prime's life, and while his beast mode was very nearly a bat, he chose to reject that in order to channel the far more powerful gorilla. How much of that backstory makes it into this movie remains to be seen, of course.

Directed by Steven Caple Jr., the movie's human cast will feature Anthony Ramos, Dominique Fishback and, as we recently revealed exclusively here on ComicBookMovie.com, Luna Lauren Velez.

There's a lot of excitement surrounding this latest live-action entry to the Transformers franchise, though we're still not sure how/if it will tie into both the original movies and 2018's Bumblebee

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts is set to be released in theaters on June 24, 2022.

Hmm, I was kinda hoping they'd get Garry Chalk but this is cool too. Maybe Perlman's there to give the character more of an edge.

@RitoRevolto - Garry Chalk's voice is deeply seared into my childhood because of his role as Primal. Way more than Cullen's (Chalk's humanity is just right there on the surface in a way that Cullen's is somewhat buried). I love them both for what they bring to Prime/Primal, but it is sad to me that Cullen gets the respect to be asked to return, but apparently Chalk doesn't.

Perlman is great, of course. And with this franchise, it's always bittersweet to see someone you like involved at all. I loved the idea of Cullen coming back to voice Prime until every script was filled with relentless death threats that sullied the character's legacy.

And besides, I'll always have Beast Machines if I want to get my Chalk fix. Hearing him shift to this weird shamanistic role was deeply affecting to me as a kid and still kind of to this day.

@Spock0Clock - ALLL of this! Beast Wars was my first introduction to anything Transformers related as a kid, so Garry's work as Primal is definitely ingrained in my mind. Cullen's is too, but like you said, it's lame that didn't extend the option for Garry to come back. Or maybe they did (I doubt it) and we just don't know.

Ok, I was thinking Keith David (voice of Goliath on gargoyales) would have been a good choice, but, Ron perlman will kill it as optimus primal.

I'm fine with this! Though I'd wish they'd ditch the human element

Beast Wars animation doesn't hold up well due to it's poor backgrounds and janky movement, but man were those the most badass of all the toy lines.
