RICK AND MORTY Co-Creator Dan Harmon Shares His Take On How The Series Could Eventually End

Despite making it clear that, as far as he's concerned, Rick and Morty is here to stay, co-creator Dan Harmon has some thoughts on what an eventual series finale could look like. Read on for details...

Rick and Morty initially flew under the radar when it premiered on Adult Swim, but the series has since become a cultural phenomenon and arguably one of, if not the, most popular animated shows on television today.

Initially, the wait for new episodes was agonising but Adult Swim's decision to order an additional seven seasons - totalling 70 episodes - ensured the series was here to stay and that its creative team had no other choice than to hurry up a little.

That's a challenge co-creator Dan Harmon has happily tackled head-on and The Hollywood Reporter (via SFFGazette.com) has learned that much of the next two seasons have mostly been written. Justin Roiland's departure has led to a decrease in drama behind the scenes (even though "soundalikes" had to be cast as the title characters following various misconduct scandals) and showrunner Scott Marder is now overseeing the series and ensuring it has some much-needed structure.

Talking to the trade, Harmon says Rick and Morty may well fulfil Rick's prophecy of running for 100 seasons because, in his eyes, "it's designed to." He does, however, have a potential ending in mind.

"It would maybe just be Morty turning 15 and finding a girlfriend that actually makes him want to be an independent person, so everything is kind of destroyed because Morty just wants to be a teenager now and start to grow up," he says. "Yeah, maybe Morty’s 15th birthday would be the catastrophic sinking of that Titanic."

And with that, the wacky adventures would end! We're sure this isn't exactly how Rick and Morty will eventually wrap up but it is interesting to hear Harmon's thoughts on what a series finale could look like should that day come.

We're keeping everything crossed that the show is here to stay because it's way too soon to say goodbye to this duo, no matter how they sound.

Adult Swim previously shared episode titles and synopses for season 7, and while they don't reveal much, it sounds like we're in for a fun 10 episodes.

"How Poopy Got His Poop Back" – Broh, Come Out With Us, You're Being So Boring Dude
"The Jerrick Trap" – Gotta be mindful Broh, big brain stuff here.
"Air Force Wong" – Virigina is For Lovers Broh
"That's Amorte" – Broh, That's-A Some Good Spaghetti
"Unmortricken" – Rick And Morty Wilding Out, Broh. They getting up to stuff.
"Rickfending Your Mort" – Gotta keep those receipts, Dawg.
"Wet Kuat Amortican Summer" – High School, Broh. Morty and Summer hang out in this one.
"Rise of the Numbericons: The Movie" – Action! Adventure! It's a whole movie, Broh!
"Mort: Ragnarick" – Heaven is for real, Broh. I saw it, Broh, I swear.
"Fear no Mort" -Only thing to fear is fear itself, Broh.

"Rick and Morty are back and sounding more like themselves than ever!" reads the synopsis for the show's return. "It's season seven, and the possibilities are endless: What's up with Jerry? EVIL Summer?! And will they ever go back to the high school?! Maybe not! But let's find out!"

"There's probably less piss than last season," it comically continues. "'Rick and Morty,' 100 years! Or at least until season 10!"

Rick and Morty season 7 premieres on Adult Swim on October 15.
