RICK AND MORTY Producer Confirms "Sound-Alikes" Will Be Used For Justin Roiland's Roles In Season 7

There's been a great deal of speculation about what Rick and Morty will sound like moving forward, and the show's producer has now confirmed the disgraced Justin Roiland will be replaced by a sound-alike.

Rick and Morty's future looked bright when Adult Swim ordered an additional 70 episodes, but this January saw the series embroiled in very real controversy. As a result, there were those who wondered whether it could reach a premature end.

As we're sure you'll recall, co-creator and lead voice star Justin Roiland was charged with domestic violence, and while those charges were dismissed a couple of months later, the damage had been done.

Between revealing exposés about his conduct behind the scenes and a series of offensive comments made in the past, it was clear Adult Swim wasn't going to bring the actor back into the fold after choosing to fire him from the show.

Rick and Morty returned to Comic-Con on Friday, but there was still a lot of uncertainty among fans about what the future of this series looks like without the man who brings the title characters - along with countless others - to life in such a unique manner.

While no casting news was revealed, executive producer Steven Levy still shared an update on recasting plans.

"We are closing in on the end of our process of the recast, but I do want to say it’s gonna be great," he teased. "I am thoroughly impressed with everything that’s going on, including all the work on season 7. Truly, that’s the thing I don’t want to be overshadowed. The show is as good as it’s ever been."

When the panel opened to questions, Levy was asked if Rick and Morty will, well, still sound like Rick and Morty when the show returns.

"It’s sound-alikes," he confirmed. "The characters are the same characters. No change." That answer was met with rapturous applause, so it will be interesting to see who is going to fill in for Roiland (we're certainly hoping they're not heading down the AI route).

TikToker SeanKellySays remains a fan-favourite suggestion to take over, so that's a possibility but nothing has been officially announced quite yet.

In Solar Opposites, Dan Stevens has replaced Roiland as Korvo, delivering a completely new spin on the character. When it comes to Rick and Morty, it appears it will be business as usual.

Season 7 of Rick and Morty is still expected to premiere this year, though it's unclear what sort of impact the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes might have had on that.

So this article admits the charges have been dismissed, yet he's been blacklisted.

But sure, there's no cancel culture. 🙄

@Origame - Well, there was also the matter of Roiland sending sexually inappropriate texts to children, among other things.

It’s not cancel culture. It’s getting fired for being a creepy jackass.

@Rpendo - Were those ever proven to be true?
Rpendo
Rpendo - 7/23/2023, 9:12 AM
@kazuma - “Proven?” Not in court, but when the texts were released by multiple people, Roiland and his lawyers didn’t dispute their authenticity, so I would imagine that’s all the proof one would need. If the texts were fake or manipulated in some way, I’d think Roiland or his legal representatives would pretty quickly refute the claims and offer some kind of counter-evidence.

That sounds like a weak argument.

Rpendo
Rpendo - 7/23/2023, 10:10 AM
@kazuma - Not a weak argument at all. It’s been months since those texts were Se texts were damning, to say the least. To not make any effort to refute them at any point is telling. I mean, it would be fairly easy to dispute, right? Presumably, Roiland would also have those texts on his device, so if the ones that were released were false, he could just release his and sue the young women for libel. But… nothing. Not even a denial.

The lack of any action whatsoever on Roiland’s part to refute the validity of the texts is telling. Either he and his lawyers are the laziest people on earth, or the released lewd texts were genuine.

Ha1frican
Ha1frican - 7/23/2023, 8:06 PM
@Origame - I dont know if you know this but the burden of proof only exists in a courtroom not the private sector. Because workers rights essentially don’t exist in this country pretty much anyone can be fired if their reputation risks the stockholders bottom line. The fact that googling “Justin Roiland” gets you domestic violence and grooming articles on the first page makes his reputation a threat to any business that partners with him. This isn’t anything new, companies have been doing this forever. I’m not saying he’s guilty and I’m not even saying it’s right. I’m saying that’s the way it works and that’s pretty much the case everywhere and has been for a long time. Teachers get fired for things that are entirely legal they do in their free time because it causes issue for the administrations parent perception. In giant corporations, politics, and other places this has always been a thing
Origame
Origame - 7/23/2023, 8:25 PM
@Ha1frican - actually no. Burden of proof is definitely applicable to whoever makes a claim. Granted, you don't have to prove your point, but you can't expect people to believe you if you don't.

The reason why we apply burden of proof to prosecution in court cases is because it's the prosecution who's making the claim. And guess what? If the defense makes a claim in court as part of their defense, they have to prove it with evidence. For example, if the defense claims a murder suspect was in another location at the time, they need some evidence to prove they were there. If not, then they can't say that.

So to is that in regular discourse. A claim made without evidence can be dismissed without evidence. And since a man's job and public life is on the line, evidence should be especially important.

Otherwise, you raped me. By your logic, you now have to accept the public shame and consequences of being a rapist, just as long as it's not specifically in court.
Ha1frican
Ha1frican - 7/23/2023, 9:15 PM
@Origame - As someone who works for a company worth multiple billions of dollars, that is exactly how it works. Also that claim of “you did this” is not the case here and you know it. I work for a company that has me interacting with peoples smart phones, if I came into contact with someone under age as a result of them approaching me because of my involvement of said company, and I engaged in inappropriate sexual discourse with them, and that came out I would absolutely be fired whether it happened at work or not. If there was the level of evidence against him I’d be gone before I had lunch and probably even if there wasn’t any at all. When you have a working relationship (especially one of his level) with a corporation you are a representative of that company whether it’s with customers, or in this case with fans. Her whole thing was she only communicated with him because she was a fan and expressed that. That alone is enough in just about any business to get you fired, that’s abusing your representation of your employer. Not exactly complicated. Again, none of this is my opinion or a personal belief, that’s how this works and it’s always been the case
Origame
Origame - 7/23/2023, 9:30 PM
@Ha1frican - well with this account, they have the documents showing your communications with this child. It isn't just Bill from accounting saying you did that and everyone believing you. Which is what you're insisting on. Hell, that would make the corporate ladder incredibly flawed, since all it would take is for you to lie about the person above you for you to advance your career.

And again, based on what you're insisting, you should be fired and banned from this site for my claim that you raped me. Why do you think you should have your job?

There is an irony here that a voice actor is so easily replaced by a sound alike actor while SAG is on strike to prevent being actors (and writers) being replaced by AI. I'm surprised more voice actors are not pushing back against actions like this. I don't know anything about this Roiland fellow, but if an actor can step in a duplicate his voice, why can't a machine?

Ha1frican
Ha1frican - 7/23/2023, 10:21 AM
@hainesy - Because one is a human with a life and monetary needs and the other is completely studio controlled asset that essentially removes that monetary opportunity entirely? They are not the same. That’s like saying why not replace a restaurant dishwasher with another person when they are fired over a dishwashing machine… because that person still needs a job lol

@Ha1frican - I get that, but you probably also text people instead of sending letter via a postal carrier, because it is cheaper and faster. Computers have been stealing our jobs for years. Also, I'm willing to be the soundalike voice actor is making a lot less money than the original.

According to Reddit he's been cleared of all charges - https://www.reddit.com/r/RedLetterMedia/comments/11zla3t/justin_roiland_has_been_cleared_of_all_charges/

If true, I guess that still means guilty AF to half the internet. 🤷‍♂️

Several commenters here are acting like Roland was judged by just the court of public opinion.. which isnt true. He's been fired because of the litany of legal and formal complaints made to AdultSwim. Yes it's a fact that the legal case against him has been dropped but the complaints, the inappropriate text messages, drinking at work, it's all incredibly damning. On the one hand Im sure Roland could come out and dispute these accusations. But he hasnt, probably on the advice of his lawyers or due to a genuine sense of guilt. I actually commend that he's not tried to justify himself. But ultimately the quantity of complaints and accusations justify his firing. Joss Whedon has been shunned for misc accusations of bullying and inappropriate behaviour. Whilst none of that is evidence of him being a monster (nobody has suggested he committed a crime, even the victims) it proves he is an asshole and company's have a right to fire assholes. Sometimes I worry that brilliant people are exclusively assholes... Dan Harmon himself is no saint but it seems he's found a balance of behaviour that is acceptable. Most artists are weirdos that push social conventions but there are still societal rules most seem to agree on. At least in the West...
