This week's fifth episode of Invincible season 4 featured the debut (well, they were briefly glimpsed fighting off Mark Grayson's evil variants last season) of a new female hero who was written as a male in the comics, and creator Robert Kirkman has now explained the change.

Spoilers follow.

When Omni-Man and Allen the Alien are assembling a team to take on what remains of the Viltrumites, they decide that Tech Jacket's Gelderian armor would come in very handy against the all-powerful conquerors.

The young crime-fighter is introduced during a battle with The Order's Walking Dread. When she defeats the hulking zombie, she unmasks to reveal that Zack Thompson has now become Zoe Thompson (voiced by Zoey Deutch).

During an interview with Den of Geek, Kirkman revealed that the reason for the gender-swap was really quite simple.

“When it came time to introduce Tech Jacket, I realized that if we had brought him straight to comics, he’d be very similar to Mark. We decided early on that it would be interesting to gender swap this character. We started thinking about who Zoe would be instead of Zach. There are some exciting things that come up when you change that character."

“The vibrancy of that character and the energy that she brings is so much more affecting coming from Zoey Deutch,” continues Kirkman. ”She’s just a really, really cool character that we’re having a ton of fun with.”

“Also, Robert was like, ‘You can only cast actors who match the character’s name! Zoey’s for this role,'” joked co-showrunner Simon Racioppa. “No, I’m kidding, she’s incredible. She came in and knew the character. She’s so professional and fun to work with, and she has a great sense of humor, because the character is fun. They go through things, but she has great jokes, great one-liners, and Zoey just delivers on all that. We could not be more delighted when we cast her for the show.”

Tech Jacket, who has been aged-down from the comics, shares a moment with Oliver Grayson in the episode, and a lot of fans are convinced that these two will ultimately embark on a relationship.

This would mark another significant change, since Oliver ends up marrying a lobster-like alien named Haluma in the comics!

"While the world recovers from catastrophe, a changed Mark fights to protect his home and the people he loves," reads the season 4 synopsis, "setting him on a collision course with a threat that could alter the fate of humanity forever."

Invincible stars Steven Yeun, Sandra Oh, J.K. Simmons, Gillian Jacobs, Seth Rogen, Walton Goggins, Lee Pace, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Jason Mantzoukas, Zazie Beetz, Grey DeLisle, Zachary Quinto, Chris Diamantopoulos, Ross Marquand, Khary Payton, Andrew Rannells, Kevin Michael Richardson, Ben Schwartz, Clancy Brown, Jay Pharoah, Mark Hamill, Matthew Rhys, Danai Gurira, and Melise.

@dragon316 - Isnt that the whole gimmick in invincible? 90% of these heroes/ villains are reworks of Marvel and DC characters. I don't mind it honestly.

@PatchesOhulihan - They gender swapped Sektor and Cyrax in that last MK game and they didn't stop there, they completely removed the whole body horror/loss of identity aspect of those characters and reduced them to literally just chicks wearing Iron Man suits who have crushes for their bosses.

@HypotheticalMan - I mean, it would help if CBM would stop writing clickbait headlines that invoke this type of reaction every time. They're just as culpable as anyone in inducing the chuds behavior, providing the chamber in their echo chamber for them to scream into.

I had finally considered trying this show due to the various comments on this site.

And now a gender switch.

Pass.

FireGunn

@DocSpock - This is by far the best comic book anything in the last decade. I really don't get your hate for animated stuff. Comics aren't exactly live action
DocSpock
DocSpock - 4/2/2026, 12:15 AM
@FireGunn -

Another person who throws the word hate like a sissy. I did not say I hate it. I said I don't watch it. I have tried some, but other than maybe Creature Commandos, it just doesn't hold my interest. Some people have different interests. There's nothing wrong with that. Oh, and I only read Marvel and DC comics. Please feel free to make something irrelevant out of that.

MrDandy - 4/2/2026, 12:19 AM
@DocSpock - oh no! I’m supposing you watched none of the Brosnan or Craig Bond films either with their gender swapped M? Or maybe Starbuck in Battlestar Gallactica? Or even Riley who was scripted to be a man?
FireGunn
FireGunn - 4/2/2026, 12:48 AM
@DocSpock - I've never seen you praise a single animated anything ever lmao. You've only said your disdain for it multiple times. I'm not saying you're wrong for feeling that way. It's just weird how you're avidly against animation when comics themselves are proto animation. The art style of comics aren't exactly photorealistic live action. Just seems weird to me is all
DocSpock
DocSpock - 4/2/2026, 1:36 AM
@FireGunn -

I've said I don't watch it or care much for what little I've seen of it. I have also said many times that I'm glad for the people who like it. Some of my best friends like it a lot. Many people here have known my position on this for many years. You turn that into hate, disdain, and being avidly against it. You simply want to make trouble out of nothing. I did watch animated stuff, then called cartoons, in the early-mid 60s.I have also taken my 2 kids, my Grandkids, and other very young family members to see Disney classic movies and things like that. I would not have if not for them though.
GinneRAChick
GinneRAChick - 4/2/2026, 2:49 AM
@DocSpock - how is it nonsense? Or relevant at all in a decision to watch something or not? Seems pretty hateful and close minded. But if that who you are and how you live then so be it.

I mean he’s not wrong. Sometimes gender swapping characters can come across as forced and virtue signaling, I get that, but I actually dig the choice here after seeing the episode.

Don’t be so triggered y’all :)
PatchesOhulihan
PatchesOhulihan - 4/2/2026, 10:19 AM
@TheLobster - Since I had no idea what the comics did before I didn't have an opinion one way or another. Though I'm not sure part of his reason for the swap holds water. He'd be too much like Mark? I'm not sure how that makes any sense. That'd be like saying Thor and Ironman are too similar so one should switch to female.

As I type that now....I'm realizing that MCU did follow through and have a female Thor & femail Iron man...hahahaha.

Anyways, I think that highlights that they're doing to add more female characters, but are too scared to say thats the reason why, so they come up with other weak arguments.

They clearly did this to give Oliver a relationship. It's so obvious. That and for virtue signaling points ofc. One of the better gender swaps so far at least. I didn't hate it.

Reboot the MCU and DCU

Vigor - 4/2/2026, 10:15 AM
@FireGunn - can you clearly define virtue signaling?
FireGunn
FireGunn - 4/2/2026, 11:09 AM
@Vigor - There was literally no other reason to turn Zack into Zoe other than to virtue signal like the vast majority of race/gender swaps
Vigor
Vigor - 4/2/2026, 11:20 AM
@FireGunn - do you have a definition for what virtue signaling is, or not?
FireGunn
FireGunn - 4/2/2026, 11:32 AM
@Vigor - Answer my question. If you can't find an answer, there's the virtue signaling
Vigor
Vigor - 4/2/2026, 12:08 PM
@FireGunn - the character being male adds nothing. The character being female adds a love interest, and lighter edge to the war group, and actual female representation instead of it being a sausage fest where characters are too alike (and the producers stated this last point in this very article).

The character being female lends itself well to the story they're trying to represent

Now, can you clearly define what virtue signaling even is?
FireGunn
FireGunn - 4/2/2026, 2:41 PM
@Vigor - 1. I already said she was added to be a love interest 2. Zack already brought a lighter edge while male and 3. This is nonsense as the story already has plenty of female heroes and villains with many being some of the most powerful in the verse.

There was no reason to change it except to give Oliver a love interest early on and to virtue signal.

If you wanted a definition, all's you had to do was search for it on google. "Virtue signaling is the conspicuous, often performative expression of moral, social, or political values intended primarily to enhance one’s reputation or show good character, rather than to effect real change."

I liked her presence in episode 5, Im only left wondering how this Iron Man knockoff didn't get cut in half by the viltrumites. But I suspend disbelief there.

Silver Surfer is a significant swap, im surprised to see red pillers out for this instance, though im not familiar with the comic. Maybe this character who was introduced 4 seasons into the show is in some way important?
