THE WALKING DEAD: Old Man Rick Will Be Explained In The Season Eight Premiere

One of the most shocking scenes from The Walking Dead trailer was of Rick as an old man, an image that Executive Producer Robert Kirkman says will be explained in the first episode of season eight.

Everyone was warned to put their Sh**ing Pants on for the Comic-Con trailer for The Walking Dead. The trailer debuted a ton of cool stuff, but one of the more intriguing scenes was of Rick as an old man laying in what appeared to be a hospital bed.

Some have theorized that this could be Rick waking up from his accident that he sustained in the premiere episode. That would mean that the entire show would have just been a dream as Rick was in his coma. While that sounds good in theory, the odds of this being the case is extremely unlikely, and all signs point to some sort of hallucination.

Whatever the scene is, we wont have to wait long for the answer. While speaking about the show at the Television Critics Association, executive producer, Robert Kirkman, was asked about the time jump shown in the trailer.

“Or was it the time jump," he asked coyly. "I don’t know, maybe it was Rick waking up from his coma. Wouldn’t that be weird? That is an intriguing tidbit that we did throw out there on purpose, and we’re hoping that people continue to question how it is that fits into the story line and what it is. Comic book fans know where a scene that kind of looked like that would fall, but it also doesn’t seem like we would be getting to that just yet if you were a comic book fan, so there’s a mystery to that.”

He then revealed that old man Rick will be explained in the first episode of season eight. “I’m pretty sure you’ll learn in the first episode what that means,” he said.

The Walking Dead premieres on October 22, 2017 on AMC.

As much as I have enjoyed this show, I feel as though they are really going to drag out every season. I really want them to end on a high note.

@JoeMomma29 - I really do love this but I agree that some episodes are really good but then there are some that make me say WTF (Tara's 90-minute episode). Still, I'll like the meaning for showing Old Man Rick.

I wish this site had a dislike button for comments. A like button is great, but you can't really gauge how well liked or disliked something is without both.

@noahthegrand - We did have one for a while. Wasn't pretty. Got removed again rather fast. Sometimes I still miss it, it really brought another layer to the madness.

Wait so are they gonna treat All Out War as a flashback?.......why?
Are they trying to shake things up? Remind us comic fans that "cool and awesome" stuff is still ahead? lol not complaining, just odd.

@MarsivNayr - Agreed. They should reserve this for Season 9.

Good, it's in a way the reverse of what happened with their Season 6 finale. Instead of introducing something and leaving it as a cliffhanger they'll address that from the get go. Likely they learned from that previous feedback. (Personally I didn't mind it at all when they did it even if I hated a lot that Negan "story development")

Its the Opening scene. Lasts for about a minute more and then cuts to the Opening Sequence. We won't see this FlashForward again until the Season Finale, appearing the same way as the first episode. That will focus on older Negan.

I'm surprised nobody here is mentioning how fake the old man beard & hair looks lol. I'm guessing this will be a dream type sequence (that's 100% gimple's m.o.), but a flash forward that will then be led up to throughout the season might actually be interesting.

I love this show, but I really hope it doesn't drag on forever. They talk about it like they want it to go another 7 or 8 seasons at least, & that sounds horrible. The most I could see them doing before it becomes Really drawn out, is 12 seasons total. & even that sounds like too long to me.
