AMC has announced that production for the currently untitled The Walking Dead Universe spin-off starring Andrew Lincoln and Danai Gurira has begun in New Jersey.
The six-episode series is set to premiere next year on AMC and AMC+ and will see Rick Grimes and Michonne reunited after those big teases in the main show (which came to an end last year after eleven seasons). Rick's fate has been a mystery since he was taken away in that helicopter, while Michonne left her fellow survivors a while ago in a bid to track him down.
Two behind-the-scenes images have been released teasing Lincoln and Gurira's respective returns along with a shot of Rick and Michonne holding hands. They don't reveal much, but we're likely to get some set photos in the coming weeks.
AMC is looking to expand The Walking Dead franchise with a number of spin-offs revolving around characters from the show, including The Walking Dead: Dead City (starring Lauren Cohan and Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Maggie and Negan) and The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon (starring Norman Reedus).
The series presents an epic love story of two characters changed by a changed world. Kept apart by distance. By an unstoppable power. By the ghosts of who they were. Rick and Michonne are thrown into another world, built on a war against the dead...And ultimately, a war against the living.
Can they find each other and who they were in a place and situation unlike any they've ever known before? Are they enemies? Lovers? Victims? Victors? Without each other, are they even alive -- or will they find that they, too, are the Walking Dead?
Scott M. Gimple, Chief Content Officer of The Walking Dead Universe, serves as showrunner and executive producer alongside Lincoln, Gurira, Denise Huth and Brian Bockrath.
