THE WALKING DEAD Season 9 Will Have A "Western Vibe" According To New Showrunner; First Image Released

Season 9 of The Walking Dead will see the debut of Angela Kang as showrunner, & she teases a "Western vibe" for the series during an interview. To back that up, we also have a pic of Michonne on horseback.

The upcoming ninth season of AMC's The Walking Dead is sure to be an eventful one. Not only are we set to see the departure of our main character Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln), but a new showrunner is coming on board, and it sounds like she'll be taking the series in some very interesting directions.

While speaking to EW, Angela Kang outlined her approach:

"We’ll explore what happened as man made objects and structures break down. Infrastructure like roads and bridges are changing and crumbling. And we’ll also explore what happens as resources are getting low. There’s a fun Western vibe that has emerged. We are going into a period where a lot of the things that we’ve seen in previous seasons have broken down, so they’ve got these horses and carriages that are being drawn around instead of cars. Things are lit with oil lamps. People are using different kinds of weaponry. There’s a real grittiness to it that I think will be fun and fresh for the viewers.”

In keeping with the Western vibe, the first offcial season 9 still features Michonne leading a group of unfamiliar survives from horseback. Has the sword-wielding fan-favourite spilt away from the main group?

Perhaps we'll find out more when the first trailer for The Walking Dead season 9 debuts at SDCC later this month.

I actually like these comments, but I just can't see myself staying on board with this after Rick leaves..

I thought the last season was pretty good overall.. some terrible moments and character decisions though.

I haven't watched The Walking Dead in years, last time I watched was the storyline where they lived in that town and they sort of had jobs.

This actually sounds pretty fresh. I haven't been enthralled with walking dead since season 3, but I kept watching. Last season I may have missed the most episodes out of just not caring as much anymore. But with a new show runner (I think Gimple was the common denominator of all the show's missteps) and new feel... I think this may open up the possibility of me getting back into the walking dead

So objects, structures breaking down or infrastructure like roads, bridges are changing, and crumbling.

Can’t believe these idiots killed of Carl... Michonne (pregnant with Rick’s baby) & Carl would have been perfect to lead into this next TWD era... Dummies.

@smoke317 - Correction - the previous showrunner killed Carl. Angela Kang did not.

I believe a few of those "unfamiliar survivors" are actually familiar. Just the few i can see:
Far left - Saddiq (unless I'm mistaken)
Center - granddaughter from Oceanside
Far right - Savior prisoner from Hilltop who stayed w/ them to fight Negan

Just pointing it out. Thanks for the article and I'm really looking forward to S9. Committed till the end! Which is probably soon.

Everyone talking about Rick and Maggie and Crossbow holding the show... No one talking about the chick who's been in 2 Billion plus movies this year. Bah.
