Scott Wilson played Hershel Greene on The Walking Dead from 2011 - 2014 and it's now been announced that the actor has passed away. The news came just an hour after it was revealed at New York Comic-Con that he will be making an appearance in the upcoming ninth season of the AMC drama but those scenes were shot a number of months ago so he will still be seen when the show returns.

"Scott will always be remembered as a great actor and we all feel fortunate to have known him as an even better person," AMC said in a statement Saturday. "The character he embodied on The Walking Dead, Hershel, lived at the emotional core of the show. Like Scott in our lives, Hershel was a character whose actions continue to inform our character’s choices to this day. Our hearts go out to his wife, his family, friends and to the millions of fans who loved him. Scott will be missed."

Wilson has had a long career in Hollywood with roles in CSI and Amazon's Bosch in recent years, not to mention the likes of The Great Gatsby, Winner in the Heat of the Night, and Cold Blood in the past.

Wilson is survived by his wife, Heavenly, an artist and attorney. His cause of death has not been revealed. Our thoughts go out to his family at this time. Feel free to share your tributes down below.

R.I.P. Mr. Greene. Damn 76 years old he had a good run. Wish he could have been with us a bit longer.

@MrCamw1 - If I may, I don't believe 76 years old is really a good run, sadly. Average for men nowadays is 80 years old, and 85.5 for women. Getting to 76 is sadly in the lower half. Wish he had more years left.

I was fortunate enough to meet him a couple times at conventions. He really was a super nice guy. He was know for stay after the conventions ended just so he could meet all the volunteers. A classy guy that will be sadly missed.

RIP. This is one of my favorite Herschel scenes, from season 4, when they were living in the prison.

So very sad. Balled like a baby when his character died on TWD and he was of course heavy on my mind yesterday. To the stars you return Mr. Wilson.
