"James Gunn Lied Again": DC Fans Fume Over Resurfaced False Promises About Lanterns From 2023

James Gunn is coming under fire from fans on social media who have realised that the version of Lanterns he promised at the start of 2023 has little to nothing in common with the finished product.

"This is the story of a couple of Green Lanterns, John Stewart and Hal Jordan. And we have a few other Lanterns peppered in there, but this is really a terrestrial-based TV show which is almost like True Detective, with a couple of Green Lanterns who are space cops watching over precinct Earth. In it, they discover a terrifying mystery that ties into our larger story of the DCU."

That's how DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn sold Lanterns when the DCU's "Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters" was announced at the start of 2023. It's normal for a movie or TV show to change through the development process, of course, but the version of this series that recently wrapped up on HBO has little to nothing in common with this ambitious pitch from the Superman director.

There was no terrifying mystery, and nothing that obviously tied into the wider DCU...unless the plan is for Noah to be the franchise's big bad in an eventual Justice League movie. Somehow, we doubt it.

Crucially, while Lanterns did take its cues from True Detective, Hal Jordan and John Stewart were not "space cops watching over precinct Earth." It seems Gunn's idea was to have the two veteran members of the Green Lantern Corps come to Earth to investigate a murder together, with "a few other Lanterns peppered in."

Lanterns doesn't feature appearances from any other member of the Corps (well, outside of an emasculated Guy Gardner), and beyond Sinestro, there aren't even any aliens in the show who look remotely different from regular humans.

Gunn has lied before—look at his review of The Flash, "one of the greatest movies ever made"—but it's hard not to wonder whether HBO's influence derailed what was meant to be the take on Green Lantern fans were hoping for.

Perhaps Gunn was swayed by the creative team he enlisted (Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King) to transform Lanterns from the series he envisioned nearly four years ago into a show heavy on identity politics that, for some reason, tore Hal down just to build John up. At the very least, we'd like to think he's learned something about hiring people who appear to hate the comics these stories are based on.

Interestingly, it wasn't that long ago Gunn said key ideas from Peacemaker Season 2 like Checkmate and Salvation were "very connected" to Lanterns. That leaves us to conclude he's either deluded, a complete bullsh*tter, or unable to follow through on his word upon realising that creating a shared world isn't as easy as Kevin Feige makes it look.

Lanterns follows new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.

Alongside Kyle Chander and Aaron Pierre, Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Nicole Ari Parker, Jason Ritter, J. Alphonse Nicholson, and Jasmine Cephas Jones round out the cast.

Lanterns is now streaming in its entirety on HBO Max.

Superman was mediocre. Supergirl, Season 2 Peacemaker, and Lanterns were all pure sh!t.

Pervert Gunn is killing the DCFU V2.

@DocSpock - I saw someone on some forum saying that superman was this universally acclaimed movie and im like where did you hear that from?, the movie made less than man of steel and there are factions of people who still prefer Cavill or reeve over corenswet

@lazloyaegar -

The movie was average. Cavill was perfect for Superman, but the SnyderVerse went in a ditch.

Corenswet could be a good Superman and the Lois casting is perfect. But he wimped out Superman and didn’t use Lois much at all.

Gunn does not have the skills for his DCU overlord position.

“Cavill was perfect for Superman”

Cavill looks like Superman. That’s it. Outside of that he’s incredibly wooden as an actor. His physicality is his crutch.

I love it. He’s going to be here another 10 years saying the same shit, lmao.

And, yeah, Josh is a total bitch and acts baffled when people call him out. The funny thing: when I tried to log back in on my account it said the ban reason was “trolling.” He either has zero self awareness or just can dish but not take the heat.

Either way, he’s a little bitch.

@DocSpock - wb blames poor cavill, affleck, gadot, etc for those movies becoming less popular as if the actors acting out lines are the fault of bad writing, thats the general origin of this reason of a reboot, they think the actors are the problem.

i didnt mind corenswet, my bigger issue is im just mentally drained on the character at this point, im looking forward to him and lex team up but like im mostly done with him and batman at this point, i feel like there isnt enough exciting stuff for them to do anymore.

I’ve been reading these comics since the early 60s.

@DocSpock - both snyderverse and gunnverse I have mixed feelings on but gunnverse pisses me off more but that's just me.

I hope things get better but I don't know how many times more they can reboot before they realize DC just isn't as popular as they(WB) think/hope it to be. Superhero comic book films as a whole aren't the popular IP anymore(with a few exceptions).

DocSpock
DocSpock - 10/7/2026, 12:59 AM
@lazloyaegar -

I don’t think the GunniVerse can be fixed.

The only way for Dc to work in the future is a clean slate restart. Then lead with Superman, Batman, Green Lantern, Flash, and Wonder Woman. Then add other’s characters after these greats have been established.

It won’t happen in my lifetime.
lazloyaegar
lazloyaegar - 10/7/2026, 1:50 AM
@DocSpock - to be fair that is what he is doing, he has done superman, gl and will do those other 3 im assuming at some point, the problem is these characters have been established with both comic fans and casual movie going fans its hard to think of new ideas for them so it really falls upon the writing, to do both the same and different in a good way which is harder than it sounds so i empathaize with james and the writers on that, but not when james is manipulating the fans i dont on that.

ComicBandit
ComicBandit - 10/7/2026, 3:29 AM
@lazloyaegar - Thought Man of Steel made more. But when you check the stats: Man of still cost the studio 375, Superman 350 mil, this is plusiniyial promos. At the end of Man of Steels run and after the ticket sales split, Man of Steel made 41 mil (60+ mil adjusted) And Superman made 125 mil profit for the syudio.which means thay saying i did better financially than Superman is actually just a myth people jave carried without chdckkng the numbers. Surprised the hell out of me though But learned they spent a lot more money promoting Man of Steel than they did for Superman which is where the offset cost comes from.

@DocSpock - I have been saying almost the exact same thing. Some ppl are saying that a complete reboot would kill the DC franchise, but I don't think it would. I think a complete overhaul in about 5 years after the MOT movie and the silly Jimmy Olsen/Grodd project, around 2033, would be the perfect recipe to get the DC brand back up and running. The only two stipulations would be, don't bring back Snyderverse and get rid of Gunn/Safran team. Just my opinion though.
DocSpock
DocSpock - 10/7/2026, 8:22 AM
@lazloyaegar -

I agree with most of that, but have zero faith can get it done at all much less be any good. The Lantern they created doesn’t count for me. Also they have discussed and will almost surely go with Wally West instead of Barry Allen for their same obvious reasons.

Gunn is incapable of his job, and most of his writers/directors are poisonous subversives.

Ellison is keeping Gunmn there long enough to MARKET & PROMOTE MOT then SKYDANCE quietly let the contract expire...BYE!🤣

If Grandma-nhunter was on earth for 30 years, shouldn't we assume that it was forcibly impregnating hundreds if not thousands of other women in order to infiltrate and destroy the human species?

John letting that genocidal AI go free could easily end all life on earth.

Hopefully he's able to inspire enough fear to save the day!
Cass
Cass - 10/6/2026, 3:22 PM
Lanterns doesn’t feature any other lantern from the Corps.

Poor Guy Gardner. Although admittedly, how he was treated by this script was probably my biggest gripe with the show. He looked scared of Jon all the time. It’s literally the only thing he shouldn’t be.
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 10/6/2026, 3:33 PM
@Cass - I don’t think it was all the time though perhaps the last time we see him…

However I can understand why he doesn’t start a fight since he’s all about optics and having 2 Lanterns fight each other in a town that already despises them wouldn’t be good for that.

We get it, Josh doesn't like Lanterns - or the DCU at large. That's totally fair. But, none of this was actually lies. Hal is very much a space cop. John was intended to become one. As for other Lanterns, peppered in - yes, we got not only Sinestro, but also Guy Gardner. That counts. There were others who also got a mention. The True Detective comparison is pretty accurate too. As for the "Salvation and checkmate" claim, well, They did have doorways to other realms (tenuous connection, granted) which also played into Superman as well and we'll have to see what comes from MOT.

While I wholeheartedly disagree with his assessment of The Flash, who's to say whether or not he actually felt that way. It's subjective. So, go ahead and question his taste or judgement, but who's to say he was lying?

I'm not apologizing for Gunn, in any way, he's made many a questionable decision in my opinion.

ParStorm
ParStorm - 10/6/2026, 3:44 PM
@Patient2670 - I don't think they were lies, he just said a bunch of stuff that got people's hopes up and none of it really came to frution. Mentioning lanterns doesn't do anything for anyone to be honest, we were expecting to see Green Lanterns in space that weren't humans. Also, this mystery doesn't appear to tie into the DCU in any meaningful way as of yet so that was a letdown as well.

@joevseveryone - Peacemaker was what it was. sometimes funny, and entertaining. I did enjoy Lanterns and Watchmen. None of them, perfect, but I enjoyed them.
