Lanterns Writer Responds To Accusations That He "Hates" Hal Jordan - But Some Fans Aren't Convinced

The first season of Lanterns came to an end on Sunday, and, to the disappointment of a lot of fans, "Dirt and Stars" revealed that the DCU's Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) will most likely remain dead after his body was discovered in the closing moments of the series premiere.

It turns out that Sheriff Kerry Kane killed the man she loved when he told her that he knew the truth about her Manhunter hybrid son, Noah.

Could Hal return? Sinestro tells Halogram and John Stewart that he knows a way to resurrect his former trainee, but the scheming villain might well have been lying. Then there's always the possibility of Jordan coming back via the parasitic entity known as Paralax.

"I definitely don't want to speculate about the answer to that question," co-creator Damon Lindelof told Collider when asked whether we might see Jordan again. "I can only tell you that everybody in the Season 1 room, inclusive of the writers who are working on Season 2, felt like, even though we knew that it was going to be emotionally devastating and/or disappointing and maybe even frustrating, that the worst possible schmuck-baity thing that we could do is show you a pilot where Hal Jordan was definitively dead, and then try to walk it back and say, 'Oh, he was a clone,' or 'He's only mostly dead' in the Princess Bride vernacular. In terms of moving forward into subsequent seasons of the show, I swear to you, as I look at you in the eye on Wednesday this 30th of September, I do not know anything about the creative, and I wouldn't want to hamstring those writers in any way for what future storytelling mechanisms they could indulge in.

Knowing what the comics have done with Parallax and Hal, I think, has died at least 3 or 4 times over the course of the canon, and celebrating everything that Kyle did in his performance to get the audience to fall in love with Hal. So I think that honoring the emotional impact and making Season 1 feel felt. The question that you're asking would be the equivalent of, 'Would I want to see a movie called Ghost 2 where Patrick Swayze was alive again?' And the answer is, I would not, because it would degrade the emotional impact of Ghost. But where there's a will, there's a way. Where there's will, there's a way."

At any rate, for the time being, Hal Jordan is and shall remain six feet under, and series writer/co-creator Tom King has now addressed the perception that he must "hate" the character for killing him off in such an unceremonious manner.

King says that he "loves Hal" as much as everyone else, viewing the original ring-slinging hero as a Captain Kirk-like figure who doesn't believe in a no-win scenario. He adds that the decision to do away with the character came down to a desire to "cut through the noise" and establish that this "universe is big, and has stakes, and it matters."

I'm sure King doesn't hate Hal Jordan, but a lot of fans are convinced that someone involved with the show does. The issue is that Lanterns didn't just kill off a beloved hero; it dragged him through the mud, putting him through the wringer while presenting him as, if not a villain, then certainly a bit of a selfish asshole, and - according to co-writer Vanessa Baden Kelly, at least - a borderline racist.

Personally, I was fine with this depiction of Jordan for the first seven episodes, because I was sure that we would see the character redeemed in the finale. Yes, Hal served his time, found love, and was ready to do whatever was necessary to protect his girlfriend and her potentially genocidal son... but was then shot in the head and buried in Rushville, with hardly anyone showing up to his funeral.

It's clearly supposed to be a tragic end, but I wonder if the creative team realises that it also bordered on cruel? Stewart tells Guy Gardner that Jordan died a hero, but did he? Maybe the show should have put a little more emphasis on the man Hal Jordan always was underneath while he was still alive.

HBO in association with Warner Bros. Television and DC Studios. The pilot episode is co-written by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King, who are co-creators for the series. Mundy serves as showrunner. The first two episodes are directed by James Hawes, with Stephen Williams, Geeta Vasant Patel, and Alik Sakharov also tapped to direct. The series is executive produced by Mundy, Lindelof, James Gunn, Peter Safran, King, Ron Schmidt, and Hawes. Based on the DC comic characters from Green Lantern.

The series stars Kyle Chandler, Aaron Pierre, Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Laura Linney, Jason Ritter, Ulrich Thomsen, Nathan Fillion, J. Alphonse Nicholson, and Jasmine Cephas Jones.

The series follows new recruit John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) and Lantern legend Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler), two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.

How can someone, educated, hate a fictional character? There's not even anything hate-able about Hal, comics, or tv show version. They made him more layered if anything. Matter of fact, people love Hal so much that they're yearning to have Kyle back next season as Hal alive

This show was awesome and it was large due to Kyle's realistic and HUMAN portrayal of Hal
Finale sucked but that conversation is for yesterday's article lol

@Vigor - They didn't make him shit. This is the worse Hal I've seen in my entire life and did immense damage to his perception.

@FireGunn - It's fair that you didn't enjoy the portrayal in the show... You really do get what you pay for. But Hal has often been portrayed as sort of an arogant douchbag. Seems like you really enjoyed it on the page. I suspect it's at least partially because you have such a hate boner for Gunn, that you're looking (subconciously or not) for reasons not to like it

@lazlodaytona - There's been like 10 on screen Hal adaptations
FireGunn
FireGunn - 10/7/2026, 5:20 PM
@Patient2670 - Hal has never once been portrayed as a tropey, broken, old lonely loser who tries to kill innocent people outside of this show other than when he was character assassinated so badly they had to retcon him as parallax because no one liked it.

The show is dogshit and I don't have to look for reasons to not like it because it's obvious why it's dogshit.

@FireGunn - name them
FireGunn
FireGunn - 10/7/2026, 5:27 PM
@lazlodaytona - From off the top of my head

1. First Flight
2. Emerald Knights
3. GL: TAS
4. The entire DCAMU (He shows up in like 5 different movies)
5. Beware my power
6. GL 2011
7. Lanterns
Patient2670
Patient2670 - 10/7/2026, 5:59 PM
@FireGunn - I think you just kind of proved my pointfrom above. Throughout the DCAMU, he was not only arrogant, he was often portrayed as sort of an idiot and reckless. In Beware my power he was literally the bad guy. GL 2011 he was Arrogant, A quitter, unreliable, selfish. And you're angry that in Lanterns, he's Surley and bitter - still arrogant and kind of a douchebag.

And then there's the comics... We can start with the obvious -Of course, there's the new 52 (which most of those DCAMU movies were based on. The parallax story line which ran for a long while between when he murdered the entire corps and guardians and when we finally learned about Parallax. I'll even include Zero Hour in there. Then there was that whole deal where he knew that Arisia was only a kid when she aged up her appearance because she had a crush on him... And he went for it (for the record, that makes him a pedophile)!

FireGunn
FireGunn - 10/7/2026, 6:30 PM
@Patient2670 - There is a difference between slightly arrogant and cocky like RDJ's Iron Man or Maverick from Top Gun vs what was portrayed here. Beware My Power and GL 2011 are horrific adaptations so I don't think they're the bar. GL 2011 Hal is far better though as he never tried to murder an innocent person.

The parallax storyline was a retcon because no one liked his awful characterization/character assassination. He was never portrayed as a broken, willing to murder loser with very little friends or family in the DCAMU or New52. The Arisia stuff was also garbage and was 40 years ago. Superman has been racist in comics. Should we adapt that as well?

The discourse around this show has been painful to witness. Art used to be something people either appreciated or didn’t appreciate. Now everyone uses every opportunity they can find to point at art and say “that’s wrong”, never “I don’t get it” or “I don’t like it”, but “that has been done incorrectly”. Our education systems are failing and the future is bleak.

@foreverintheway - No one cares about your relativism. Yes, art is objective and has always been objective up until the postmodernist way of thinking came about. There are literal schools for acting, writing, and cinematography. If everything was subjective, why would they teach that? There is a reason this stuff is taught. One standard of film criticism is the objective standard which comprises of plot holes, continuity issues, objectively dogshit direction and the Subjective standard which basically consists of how much they personally enjoyed the film, or liked the film, or were entertained by it. You can like Lanterns, but it is objectively awful by every standard.

@FireGunn - this really is a key point that many don’t realize. Good art, beauty, proper form are not subjective.

Those arguing otherwise do not realize that in their arguing they refute themselves. You cannot view the Sistine chapel or Yosemite falls and call them mid. In doing so you are just proving the problem is with your taste not the object in question because these objects are objectively beautiful.

A proper Lantern story has certain forms and guardrails in place that must be adhered to in order to meet the ideal. Hal Jordan is a kind of icon. You gotta understand and portray that icon in its basic essence to do it right and this show obviously failed at this even if we wanted to say the show was good as good shows go.

Anyhow, good to see someone state the obvious fact that good film is not just an opinion

I enjoyed the series. I wish the finale had at least a 10 second fight with John and Guy at the end. Ending it with a comic book style fight would have really gone a long way. I really had a kick with all the comments on this site. Got some good gifs out out it.

I think it was a pretty good buddy cop series.
I would like to see a second season, but need both characters.
Not sure a true green lantern sci-fi series with a super duper powerful ring would work for tv budget.

Then why not kill John instead who is infinitely less important to the GL mythos than Hal Jordan?
