Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has announced the release of the DC Studios drama series Lanterns: The Complete First Season on 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD on February 9, 2027.
So, it won't be long until fans are able to bring home every twist of the investigation with the DCU series that stars Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart.
In terms of what you'll find on the disc, there's not much. A press release says to look out for the "Inside the Episode" featurettes (those can currently be found on YouTube), but also "exclusive-to-home-entertainment special features."
The latter haven't been disclosed, and there's no mention of any deleted scenes or a gag reel. Hopefully, details will follow in the coming weeks, though it's worth noting that there are seemingly no plans for a Steelbook set.
Lanterns proved surprisingly divisive with fans due to its portrayal of Hal and the decision to kill the character this early into the DCU. Shortly after the finale aired, series co-creator Tom King defended the show's biggest swings:
"In one way, you’re making up a story, but in another, you’re continuing a story, a story that’s been going on since [Jerry] Siegel and [Joe] Shuster [created Superman] in [1938] — two children of immigrants just lying on their floor, turning their fantasies into a cape. And you can draw a direct line between that and us 80-something years later."
"You’re always standing on the shoulders of these giants, and so you constantly have to pay respect to them, and acknowledge them almost like they’re your ancestors. But part of that legacy for the people who have touched Lanterns, from [Gil] Kane to [Steve] Englehart to Alan Moore to Geoff Johns, is all those people brought something new. All of them brought something special."
"None of them were like, I just want to copy the person before me and reiterate it. So to honor that legacy, you have to honor that creativity and push the ball a little further."
Lanterns follows new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.
Alongside Kyle Chander and Aaron Pierre, Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Nicole Ari Parker, Jason Ritter, J. Alphonse Nicholson, and Jasmine Cephas Jones round out the cast.
"Lanterns' leads shine bright," we wrote in our Season 1 review, "but even they can't save this abysmal adaptation of the comics that, embarrassed by the source material it's based on, delivers a woefully bland and uninspired take on Green Lantern that's another miss for the DCU."
Lanterns is now streaming in its entirety on HBO Max.
